My laptop has windows7 starter installed. i have purchased anytime upgrade to home premium but it won't install. The product key is recognised. Microsoft doesn't seem to offer any support without payment.

I'd like to 'change' from my retail copy of home premium to my retail copy/key of professional. Any suggestions on how I can do this without a clean install?
Can I simply 'enter new key'? Can I enter an "anytime upgrade" key? Can I do an upgrade in place using the Win 7 Pro media?
I have a Samsung Netbook which came with Windows 7 Starter and I am finding that I miss the extras of Home Premium Retail which installed on my Desktop PC. I have the Home Premium installation disk which I used, but as far as I am aware it is a single use licence.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded this lunchtime from Windows 7 Starter to home premium via the Windows Upgrade Advisor which said my netbook was compatible, I carried out the upgrade via the windows upgrade advisor. It worked fine for a while but I was having trouble trying to set up my LAN and wireless connection to work together in order to get onto xbox live via BT Openzone. After a while the advice from the microsoft website was to carry out a system restore, so I did and used the recommended date, however on trying to restore the ugrade failed and reverted back to windows 7 starter. Tried again and had the same issue

Also, Is there a way of doing the upgrade through the Windows anytime upgrade but using a MSDN retail home premium key? I ask this because it sounds easier to do that way since it doesn't have a DVD drive.
I'm thinking of upgrading from 7 Professional to 7 Ultimate. I'd really like the ability to boot from a VHD. I've heard that Starter, Home Premium, and Professional, are all the same as Ultimate, they just have alot of features locked. Is this true? I'm also aware that an upgrade to 7 from Vista could bring system instability/slower performance, and I'd like to know if there are any risks by using WAU. Thoughts?
Edit: After reading my post, I realize what I said might confuse some of you. I'm not wanting to upgrade from vista, I don't have vista. I was using that as an example.
Windows Anytime Upgrade was not successful. Due to when you encountered this problem the system would not give any error code to start with isolating the problem why it fails.

I start the Anytime Upgrade software and it works great, but fails as the upgrade gets around 90%, at which the upgrade process "fails" and restores the OS to Windows 7 Starter. Now, I need to reinstall Windows 7, and would prefer to install as fresh as possible. Do I install from the Home Premium ISO or Ultimate ISO?
I purchased Windows 7 Professional through the Ultimate Steal.
Downloaded it, put it on a disk also.
It will go through the start of the setup and copy files etc, and then it will give an error and say to install from a current version of windows I need to use the upgrade anytim through windows.
But when I go to upgrade anytime it asks for an upgrade key, but all I have with the purchase was a product key and it says that I can't use the product key.
any help?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI confirm that you can windows anytime upgrade from Home Premium (even not yet activated) to Professional using Digital River product key (of course for Professional edition).
The process takes less than 10 minutes and you don't need the Professional or Anytime Upgrade DVD. All the installed programs are intact.
A week or two ago there was a considerable amount of confusion concerning the Anytime upgrade. The people on the phone at MS insist they must send you a DVD in the mail. Windows 7 replies all you need to do is pay and get a key. The book Windows 7 inside and out says the same thing, but when you try to do that, at least this is what happened last week, the web site fails.
I attribute this to the product being brand new and just one of the glitches that go along with a new roll out. Does anyone know if these issues have been clarified?

I ordered a dell laptop for my mom (xps15z). when i got it in i was on the fence about keeping it. then i decided to keep it, i used anytime upgrade on it to upgrade to windows 7 professional. After testing the laptop some more, im disgusted by the quality of it, not necessarily its performance (well besides the screen is just crap). The whole thing (even though some of it is aluminum or some kind of metal) is just plain cheap feeling. Everytime i go to open the laptop, my thumb gets caught on the some lame cheap chrome trim. (i dont see that trim lasting long). the lid/display is flimsy. it feels like a cheap toy. period. Im going to return it to dell and get her one of the samsungs that i tested out at some best buy nearby, its pretty solid feeling. its like a macbook or something.
anywho, what should i do in this scenario (about transferring the anytime upgrade). i believe the samsung will just have home edition installed, so i can use (or would like to use) this same key for it...

Open a Command Prompt with Administrative Privileges:
Click All programs then click Accessories, then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.
Click on Continue message on the dialogue box with "Windows Need your permission to continue"
Change directory to the root of C Drive by typing CD from the "C:>" prompt.
At the CMD prompt type attrib -r WAUUPGRD
Type RD /S /Q WAUUPGRD
Warning: Make sure you type it in exactly as shown above.The RD command with the /S option will delete all directories and subdirectories contained within the directory specified. The / Q command turns off the prompt asking if you are sure you want to do this. Once you run this command, you can not undo it. The problem is that I have used Anytine Upgrade to install Win 7 Home Premium instead of the out-of-the-box Starter version. If I get a replacement netbook with Starter on it, will I be able to use the same activation number on the new one or will it ring up "Tilt"? If I need to revert to Starter to return this netbook, then how do I do that? There are too many subsequent restore points to be able to go that route. The one that would take me back to starter status has disappeared.

Then the msg said it was upgrading and restarted. when it was logging off, upgrading windows was only 30% complete and then it shut down. when i started the netbook, windows won't start. the msg is start windows normally or system repair. tried both but no success. can't even start windows using safe mode, using last configuration settings etc.

I have just purchased a new pc that came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, which wont run my company software, which was made in 1995, 16 bit. This 16bit software ran fine on my previous pc, which had Windows 7 Starter 32-bit. View 1 Replies View RelatedThis problem started a week ago, when the Acer Aspire One 532h would not boot. Eventually, even restoring it using the partition failed. I have ordered the Acer recovery discs which will restore it to Win 7 starter. But yesterday, just on a whim, I turned on the netbook and was able to restore it successfully. I then installed Webroot SecureAnywhere Essentials and have run numerous scans that found no threat - so this does not appear to be malware. (The unit had avast! free AV before this trouble started.) I then spent hours installing Win 7 updates using the Windows Update utility on the Acer. However, near the end of the Win updates, Windows crashed and the screen went black again. When this happens, the unit's power stays on; this is not a fan/overheating problem, I don't think.
This a.m., the Acer booted successfully, and I then uninstalled Office and installed Open Office. The unit then "blacked out" again. During this time, I also tried to install Java, since I had been getting a pop-up that it needed to be updated. Java would not install successfully, and the Acer then started "blacking out" several more times. I was finally able to boot it in Safe Mode to turn it off. But it took several attempts.
Rather than running the recovery discs from Acer for Windows 7 Starter, I am considering upgrading to Win 7. Can anyone tell me if this might solve this problem? Or should I just proceed to order an external drive to run the recovery discs?
