I confirm that you can windows anytime upgrade from Home Premium (even not yet activated) to Professional using Digital River product key (of course for Professional edition).
The process takes less than 10 minutes and you don't need the Professional or Anytime Upgrade DVD. All the installed programs are intact.
My drive failed and I am needing to do a system recovery but I did an anytime upgrqade from pro-ultimate. If I do a system recovery, how do i go about getting ultimate back since I had no disks for it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedA week or two ago there was a considerable amount of confusion concerning the Anytime upgrade. The people on the phone at MS insist they must send you a DVD in the mail. Windows 7 replies all you need to do is pay and get a key. The book Windows 7 inside and out says the same thing, but when you try to do that, at least this is what happened last week, the web site fails.
I attribute this to the product being brand new and just one of the glitches that go along with a new roll out. Does anyone know if these issues have been clarified?
I purchased Windows 7 Professional through the Ultimate Steal.
Downloaded it, put it on a disk also.
It will go through the start of the setup and copy files etc, and then it will give an error and say to install from a current version of windows I need to use the upgrade anytim through windows.
But when I go to upgrade anytime it asks for an upgrade key, but all I have with the purchase was a product key and it says that I can't use the product key.
any help?

I'm thinking of upgrading from 7 Professional to 7 Ultimate. I'd really like the ability to boot from a VHD. I've heard that Starter, Home Premium, and Professional, are all the same as Ultimate, they just have alot of features locked. Is this true? I'm also aware that an upgrade to 7 from Vista could bring system instability/slower performance, and I'd like to know if there are any risks by using WAU. Thoughts?
Edit: After reading my post, I realize what I said might confuse some of you. I'm not wanting to upgrade from vista, I don't have vista. I was using that as an example.
Windows Anytime Upgrade was not successful. Due to when you encountered this problem the system would not give any error code to start with isolating the problem why it fails.

I start the Anytime Upgrade software and it works great, but fails as the upgrade gets around 90%, at which the upgrade process "fails" and restores the OS to Windows 7 Starter. View 2 Replies View RelatedI ordered a dell laptop for my mom (xps15z). when i got it in i was on the fence about keeping it. then i decided to keep it, i used anytime upgrade on it to upgrade to windows 7 professional. After testing the laptop some more, im disgusted by the quality of it, not necessarily its performance (well besides the screen is just crap). The whole thing (even though some of it is aluminum or some kind of metal) is just plain cheap feeling. Everytime i go to open the laptop, my thumb gets caught on the some lame cheap chrome trim. (i dont see that trim lasting long). the lid/display is flimsy. it feels like a cheap toy. period. Im going to return it to dell and get her one of the samsungs that i tested out at some best buy nearby, its pretty solid feeling. its like a macbook or something.
anywho, what should i do in this scenario (about transferring the anytime upgrade). i believe the samsung will just have home edition installed, so i can use (or would like to use) this same key for it...

Now, I need to reinstall Windows 7, and would prefer to install as fresh as possible. Do I install from the Home Premium ISO or Ultimate ISO?

Open a Command Prompt with Administrative Privileges:
Click All programs then click Accessories, then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.
Click on Continue message on the dialogue box with "Windows Need your permission to continue"
Change directory to the root of C Drive by typing CD from the "C:>" prompt.
At the CMD prompt type attrib -r WAUUPGRD
Type RD /S /Q WAUUPGRD
Warning: Make sure you type it in exactly as shown above.The RD command with the /S option will delete all directories and subdirectories contained within the directory specified. The / Q command turns off the prompt asking if you are sure you want to do this. Once you run this command, you can not undo it. I decided to use DigitalRiver to download my copy of Windows 7 and I will NEVER use them again. They have no phone or tech support; the only way to contact them is by email, in which a response can take many days.
It took me over 10 hours to download their download manager. While the DM seems to work OK, I keep getting the same error message near/at the end of the unpacking:
"We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded. Please check the folder properties to make sure that you have security permission on the folder to write files and that the folder is not read-only"
So while I wait for some intelligent response from them, I'm trying to create a bootable DVD but I'm not having any luck. I've tried using BurnAware and UltraISO yet every time I reboot, the DVD never boots...any ideas on exact steps to take?

I think ive added all the Info that was Requested to assist me with my Issue, I can play games with No issues but whenever i try to play a Online Video or today i noticed that DVDs played via my player are BSOD'ing me also. Its not the typical Blue screen that i remember from back in the 98/xp days, The Screen is completely Blue.. No Errors Given and the only option is to Hard Boot the System.
I just purchased a new build, listed below, and cannot figure out why I am getting random hard freezes. There is no blue screen of death, just hard freeze required restart. I get about 3-5 a day.

I am running low on time, as my one month for newegg returns runs out soon. I lost a week having to RMA the hard disk already, as the first one that came was DOA. I have performed furmark for 20 minutes, no failure. Memtest overnight, no failure. Seagate tools, passed test (didn't do thorough long test). Prime95 CPU small FFT for 8 hours, no problem. Prime95 CPU blend for 3 hours, no problem. I have tried reinstalling windows 7, and I have updated the BIOS.
I installed Win 7 RC on a new build and purchased Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM with upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. The Win 7 upgrade disc has arrived. I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

I've taken a look at it, and there's a "Windows.old" folder on the root of C:, which is of course a back up of all his data.
There's also a batch file inside the folder with the following inside of it:

I have a pc with Windows XP pro 32bit retail version. First I have made an image, just in case. Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port).What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys
3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a I7 920, with 12GB DDR3-1600 Memory, 2 x 300GB Raptors in a RAID 0, 1 x 300GB standalone and 640GB Standalone, and a ATI 4870x2 video card. I am upgrading using a DVD, and basically it's taken 7 hours before I aborted the upgrade (62% completed migrating folders and files).
All my other upgrades have gone reasonably quickly (Though not as quickly as some other installs and upgrades seem to go on lesser hardware) though the other 6 builds I have run. I don't really want to run a fresh install, can anyone suggest a solution? Does Windows 7 not really like ICHR10?
I run Windows 7 on my ex-Vista laptop, and would bite off someones hand if it I had to revert. But on my desktop, I dual boot XP and Windows 7, and am just as happy using XP as Windows 7. There are a few things I like prefer in Windows 7, but the same is true for XP.
M$ is already charging me to replace the piece of @@@@ that was Vista with Windows 7, why would I want to pay to upgrade XP? And the Pro upgrade price is OUTRAGEOUS, especially as I am based I the UK.
