Various "customize" And "advanced" Tabs On The Screen?
Nov 10, 2011
I had windows XP, and recently decided to upgrade to 7, skipping Vista. I have all my important files backed up, and I intend to reformat the hard drive and start fresh. I put in the Windows 7 disk, clicked through the various "customize" and "advanced" tabs on the screen where I select a drive to install to, selected the drive I wanted, and hit "format", and verified that I really meant to do that. Nothing appeared to be happening, so I got up and made some lunch, and when I came back nothing still appeared to be happening. I assumed that it might format the drive during the next step. I am still not clear whether this is the case or not.
I selected the drive and proceeded with the installation. It said it was copying the files from the disk, then expanding the files, but it remained at 0% files expanded for several minutes before informing me that the files were missing, and the installation could not continue. It took me back to the first screen, and I tried all the prior steps again, twice, both with and without selecting format and had identical results. I decided to restart and try again, which I did by closing the installation window and verifying the restart, only to have more identical results.
Frustrated, I decided to simply upgrade the XP installation to 7 and then manually delete the chaff from the HDD when the process was finished. I restarted again, this time selecting upgrade from the menu, where it informed me that I had to open this option while running my previous version of Windows. I restarted yet again, this time not booting from the DVD, and saw "BOOTMGR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".Getting pretty sick of restarting repeatedly and getting nowhere (it keeps going downhill from here), I nonetheless tried again, to be greeted with the same message. I finally resorted to firing up my trusty Compaq laptop slab from 2001 (where I am writing this right now) and Googling the error, and came up with two possible fixes to try.Rebooting to the DVD, I selected "repair your computer" instead of install, but the list of existing operating systems was empty. I hit "use recovery tools (yadda yada)" anyway, opened the terminal, and tried startup repair, which said it could not fix my problem. Then, I opened the terminal and tried bootrec.exe /fixboot (successful), bootrec.exe /fixmbr (successful), and bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd (0 windows installations identified). Restarted, got same error. Thinking that the empty existing operating systems list and the rebuildbcd message meant that something was wrong with my XP install now, I dug out my dusty old XP disk and tried to use it to repair or reformat the drive in a desperate bid to regain some usefulness from my machine.
It BSoD'd before geting to any options, and continues to do so if I restart and try again. So, to recap:Can't finish windows 7 installation, it can't find the files it just copied. Can't open previous XP installation, it can't find the bootmgr. Can't upgrade XP to 7, it requires me to be in XP first. Can't fix the bootmgr, it doesn't think the XP install is there. Can't install fresh XP, it BSoDs.Can't do anything with my computer anymore, see above.

Not sure if i am in the right area to ask this but wanted to see if the below is possible:We are working in a large business that has the good old 'Ctrl Alt Del' option enabled (like most) - so for anyone to log into the computer (whatever OS) it prompts for a username/passwordI wanted to see if we can add a link onto the screen (dialog box) - Basically if a user has forgotten their password - instead of calling the Helpdesk of that company - they could click this link and it would take you to a internal page (that the company has setup to reset/go through the steps of resetting their password)

Has anyone found a way to change the "Welcome" screen without downloading a "fix" from the inet?
I've tried creating a jpeg (the correct size) in windowssystem32oobeinfoackgrounds (saved as defaultBackground) and making a chage in the registry to:
HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Authentication>LogonUI>Background... Key OEMBackground value 1 ... but to no avail.
What is interesting is that the original MS background file ((bitmap) in system 32oobe) that is the welcome screen has security permissions on it .... with Adminstrators only having Read/Read and Execute ONLY... O.O
TrustedInstaller has full rights to it .
Any suggestions?

I really don't like the logon screen in build 7057 -- looks pale and insipid compared with previous build (especially on a laptop with one of those Ultra-Brite screens)
It's the same screen you see when you lock the computer -- horrible.
Any way to change this -- sometimes there is a way to add an OEM customization.
Anybody had a chance to tinker around with this and get a nice background?

I changed the screen resolution to 1280 x 720, but that was too big, then I changed it to 1024 x 768, but that was too small. Is there a way I change customize the screen resolution to somewhere in between?

I'm currently in safe mode in my windows 7 laptop which I can only access this computer by. The reason is because when i try to boot windows regularly, I get past the login screen then to be pwned by some black screen with my cursor only displaying. I downloaded a software from IOBit called Advanced system care, then I ran a full system clean. I came back later to reset my laptop and encountered an update, I let it update. When the update was finished, I started getting the Black screen of death.
Things I tried:
- System restore (It couldn't find a restore due to the update)
- Uninstalling updates (No difference was made)
- The CTRL+ALT+DEL then some link for the fix (CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work)
- Start up repair (Nope, no difference)
- The /sfc command (It worked but, still no difference)
I'm think pretty much stuck as I don't have a Windows 7 CD, although I have a formatted USB, I'm considering downgrading to XP. But, I'm getting problems with that as well.

I recently bought my Lenevo computer new, and it's having some problems. These started upon me first going onto the computer and I figured it would sort itself. It didn't. It's running Windows 7.While trying to switch windows, and clicking onto a new tab, sometimes I have to click that tab several times to be able to go to it. The screen will flicker as if it went to it for a very very brief second and then show the original page again. Occasionally, while in the same window I was in before, when clicking a text box to enter text or a log in, you have to click it more than once for it to do anything. This is the same for clicking links as well. Sometimes when I do try to click on a pop up box which should be associated with that window, it goes to BEHIND the window I am on, instead of allowing me to interact with it. Sometimes I am randomly switched into a new window for no reason or it will not let me go to certain tabs

In previous versions, you could give focus to a single tab (like clicking on it) and then use the arrow keys to toggle between tabs.
I can't do that in 3.5, did they take that out or did they just change the way it's done?

If I try to shut down IE through Task Manager it immediately attempts (and usually succeeds) in recovering the tabs. Similar to if it stops responding and then it asks if you want to restore your last browsing session. Is there a way to disable this?If something weird goes on while I'm browsing I believe one way to (hopefully)prevent being infected is to shut down IE immediately without clicking anything. I always thought the best way to do this was by killing the process. But since it recovers my sessions any harmful sites will come right back.

How do they do it in Tomshardware's Web Browser Grand Prix? There is a test where they open 40 tabs in order to test memory efficiency. Do they open tabs one by one or they have batch or script file. I just want test it because most of the time, I only open 10 to 15 tabs when browsing the internet. But in reality, do people really have 50 to 100 tabs open all at the same time, I mean what are they doing on their browsers?

If I minimize a folder or firefox window etc I cannot bring it back. If I mouse over the tab at the bottom the preview flashes up for a second then goes and any clicking or alt tabbing will not restore it.
the two most prominent being an issue with the 2 monitor setting bringing the window up on a non existent screen and a program on the startup boot list causing the problem. I have eliminated both these possibilities and a few others and the problem still persists. As a workaround I can still access the windows through task manager > applications and switch to/bring to the front but this is very awkward and I need a fix not a work around.

I have always wondered why Microsoft never implemented this feature in the first place. Back when I had Windows XP and Vista, I used a program called taskix to reorder tabs on the taskbar. Now I have Windows 7. I have set the taskbar not to combine all like tabs under one icon. For instance, when I open several windows of google chrome, each window pops out as a seperate tab. When I try to move a google chrome tab around, Windows 7 automatically moves the entire tab group around my other pinned programs. For instance, say I have four google chrome tabs open and I want to move chrome tab number 2 up one. When I try to do this, windows 7 moves all four chrome tabs around.

I don`t know how, but something made all my tab groups and current tabs completely disappear. They don`t even show up as closed, so I can`t restore them from the closed tabs function. Would the tabs have been stored anywhere for me to retrieve them? I really need them back!! (I had 100+ !!! )

there any other reason why to use it?I use now Google Chrome, I completely forgot about Firefox. Tried Opera few times...ts user specific, I know. I like it because it does what I need to do , is fast, u can open 200+ tabs and it still works perfect. I like the simplicity and simple look of it...Firefox was doing fine till version 3.6. Than it could not hold the tabs and it kept crashing.I stopped using IE 10 years ago or so. Yes, I still use it if there is no other way or on someone else's PC and I know why is it, that I don't use it.

I have about a dozen Firefox tabs open on my taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Win7 64bit on Dell E6510. But some of them will shift position on the taskbar on their own. Happens all the time, and it's very aggravating because I'm needing to be able to hit them quickly and often and need to have them stay in the expected position. Can't afford the time to hunt around for them. For example [URL]will often move itself to the far right. Even BigCharts.com is doing this now. None of my searches on the web can answer how to stop this. It's easy to grab/drag a tab window for another application around on the taskbar, but within the single application of Firefox this doesn't work. Why/how are these windows shifting around? This never happens on my other laptop, a WinXP SP3 machine.

I posted a while ago saying my laptop would freeze etc, and I suspected it was because my fan needed to be cleaned. I got it checked out and cleaned, and my fan is working perfectly okay now. However, the freezing just happened again. I wasn't doing anything specifically hardcore, I just had my browser open and was listening to the radio, and scrolling through Facebook etc. I had only 3 or 4 tabs open. When I opened a new page to someone's blog, my laptop froze again. The mouse froze, I couldn't do anything, even my Caps Lock wasn't functioning. The music started going insanely slow. I waited for a bit and it stayed like that, so I just switched it off and restarted it. I got my hard drive checked out at the store and they said it's okay and there are no issues with it. It might be my registry because I use CCleaner from time to time.

My pc is only a few months old But, for some unknown reason every time I go to the internet explorer & choose a site to find information no matter which site. It closes down & goes all the way back to my screen saver. (This can do it from the 1st 30 seconds to maybe upto 2 mins) loosing that site & having to re-type the whole thing back in all over again. I have tried all over the place trying to find solutions to this . But to no avail. I do not have my browser history either that seems to have disappeared as well.
