Uninstalling A Bunch Of Software That Was Slowing Down Netbook

Apr 22, 2012

I was in the middle of uninstalling a bunch of software that was slowing down my netbook including ESET Nod 32, and I probably ran Ccleaner after that. After restarting the system windows 7 boots fine, but no Aero, can't run most windows service like sound, wifi, restore points, sfc, or even system restore when booting the netbook using f8 to restore windows from the recovery partition. .exe extension works fine as I was able to run assoc command in cmd and confirmed it. The recovery partition is there and I haven't tampered with it so its safe to rule out that possibility. Something mesed up my windows services and I can't get it to work anymore. Please note that the system is a netbook that didn't come with a recovery disk and no dvd rom. After uninstalling software and running ccleaner windows aero, sfc, system restore, and other windows services won't work. .exe still works fine.*

Failure To Install A Bunch Of Updates?

Aug 31, 2012

I have been trying to install a bunch of windows updates, but every time I try it gets to 15% configured, then fails. It shuts down and restarts my computer and gives me a message that the updates failed. I'm not sure what to do here.

Here's a screenshot to show the updates that aren't working. (If you can't see it, right click the "broken link" symbol and click "open image in new tab/window")

Renaming Bunch Of Files In Windows 7 While Ignoring Extensions

Aug 19, 2011

How to rename a bunch of files in Windows 7 while ignoring the filetypes at the same time? In Windows XP this wasn't a problem, no matter what format the file had, the numbering would continue anyway. In Windows 7 the numbering starts over again when a file has a different filetype format.

For example:
WINDOWS XP:
file (1).jpg
file (2).mov
file (3).wma

Windows 7:
file (1).jpg
file (1).mov
file (1).wma
file (2).jpg
file (2).mov
file (3).jpg
file (4).jpg

I want the numbering to continue in Windows 7... (Not have multiple number ones or two's)

Searching A Bunch Of Text Files For A Particular Text String?

Feb 2, 2012

I have a project where I need to search a large amount of text files on my home PC. I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7. My research indicated this feature was available in Windows 7.

If you do a search in Windows XP, you get a bunch of fields. You can pick to search for text INSIDE the particular sub folder structure.

I have found this feature in Windows 7, but it is different. I have tried using wild cards but it does not seem to work properly.

Domain Slowing Down Computer?

Sep 12, 2011

Our setup is as follows: Users are in a remote location connected by satellite link to the domain server. The domain server is DNS and DHCP server for client computers. Because of the satellite connection data transmission has a longer than normal latency delay but transfer speeds are not bad (0.5 mps).I can understand that when logging in, a client computer might experience a longer login time as Windows communicates with the domain server to validate credentials. However, after logging in, are there network activities being performed by the client computer with the domain server on a permanent basis that would make the client computer much slower than normal while performing local tasks? Users report that when logged into the domain, their computers slow down significantly even when opening files on their hard disks. It might be that other issues are causing the problem, but I would like to understand better how the client - server relationship works when logged into a domain so that we can test further.

The Netbook is connected wirelessly.I use Advanced System Care Pro, BT Infinity Desktop Help, and CCleaner to keep both machines (otherwise) singing.So. How come my little Netbook averages 25.4 Mb download speedwhile my super-duper desktop averages only 4.79? Those being regularly indicative figures, that's an 81% difference.

When checking speed testing sites, we're always getting full speeds. When downloading using Steam or uTorrent (Anything that manages its own downloads) I can get 2.4 - 2.5MB/s download. But when I'm using any form of web browser, firefox, IE ect. Loading pages can take 10-20 seconds, pictures 30seconds-2minutes. Downloads are much much slower, around 500KB/s and while videos usually load fast enough they sometimes drop their connection and stop buffering.

Computer Slowing Down And Freezing?

Oct 20, 2011

Recently my computer has been freezing and slowing down a lot when I use it. At first I thought it was a driver issue since my computer only freezes whenever I am watching a video or listening to music, I think I installed the right driver but my computer is still freezing ( a strange side effect from the freezing is if there is any audio, it will slow down and start to stretch out). After a few minutes it will revert back to normal like nothing happened.

Also my computer isn't running smoothly anymore, many times when I type, the words jump to completion. When I scroll, it jumps and doesn't smoothly scroll down the page. I tried everything from defragging to updating every driver and program possible and still the problems persist.

Computer Slowing During Multitask

Nov 3, 2009

One of my favorite things about Windows 7 vs it's predecessors, has been the way it seems to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.. Meaning, I could start a file transfer, start a download, and still have a very responsive, use-able machine for basic tasks. I read about the dispatcher lock fix that was part of 7, that allowed the OS to handle multiple calls to the cpu simultaneous, and thought it was due to this.

The machine has remained fast and responsive during the entire 5 months I have been using the OS.. Up to now.. All of a sudden, the machine slows for normal tasks, stalls, stutters, if I so much as start a transfer or extraction in the background. What could be going on. System is the one listed in my specs.. 8gb of ram, 5400+.

New Hard Drive Computer Is Slowing Down

My computer is running realllllly slow, and I'm not sure why. There's a lot of extra space on the computer, and Hardly anything running in the back ground. I just put a new hard drive in the computer, as it has done this previously, It slowed to a point where it would freeze and no longer work, until one day I turned it on, went to log in and it automatically restarted, so I discovered that the hard drive had crashed, I put a new one in it and it was fine, until about 2 weeks ago, when it started slowing down majorly.

Computer Performance Slowing Down And Sometimes Freezes

Feb 8, 2012

I am having a problem with my computer slowing down and also freezing. This almost always happens within four or five minutes of starting to use it after an overnight standby. I will notice things starting to slow down and it sometimes reaches the point where it freezes. If I check Task Manager it will show the CPU usage as very high, 70, 80, 90%, and, if it is frozen, 100%. Task Manager also shows that Internet Explorer 9 is the program using the CPU. Is this malware calling home? The computer is a Dell GX620 with Windows 7 and 2 GB RAM and it's running Norton Internet Security.

Multiple Computers Freezing/slowing Down

Apr 27, 2012

having a really strange issue that is affecting multiple computers all with windows 7 64 bit.

Home computer: Only seems to happen when installing or deleting .exe files... usually when I try and delete them. It is fine doing everything else.. gaming/etc.

Specs:
I5 750 CPU
8 GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia 560 TI

Work computers (at least 6 different ones, all with different users): If it were only these computers having the issue, I would say lack of RAM... since we run a lot of apps, but since it is happening on my home computer....

Specs:
Intel 2 Duo E7500
4 GB RAM
Nvidia Quadro NVS 450

At work I caught the RAM dropping down to 0 free, where it will normally have around 1 gig - 500 mb free. I haven't been able to catch the ram usage at home when the issue happens... since you can't even CTRL ALT DELETE, I forget the exact message, but it pretty much tells you to just restart your computer manually. Also the internet connection will drop, and firefox will say a script stopped responding.

This seems to have started happening in the last month or two, which leads me to think there was an update that affects how windows 7 is allocating RAM, where it is trying to use too much for the system and draining it.

Since this seems to be affecting so many computers I really expected to see a lot of people having the issue online, but I haven't been able to find anything.

Windows 7 Randomly Slowing For No Reason It Seems?

I've had this laptop for about 8 months now. Kept very clean, always plugged in.First thing I did was get AVG and kept it up to date. Kept Windows up to date as well. Scan regularly, disc cleanup and defrag regularly as well.About 1 month ago it started being significantly slower than before. Quite frustrating mainly because I can't figure out why. Hard drive is about half full, no viruses according to AVG[I haven't had a virus since I got my last computer 5 years ago to the best of my knowledge]I don't do a whole lot, play WoW and listen to music mainly. Sometimes leave Facebook or MSN on in the background as well. Used to work great. Not sure why it's slowing down

Constant Disk Activity On New Laptop Slowing EVERYTHING Down?

Dec 27, 2011

Just got a new Acer aspire laptop for christmas. Everything works fine except that every time I turn it on or wake it up, there's about a 10 minute period of non-stop disk activity that causes every other application to come to a grinding hault.I downloaded process monitor and checked it out, and found the two most-accessed files are two TMP files called MSI7895.tmp and MSI8BDA.tmp, both in the Windows installer directory. No idea what either of these files are for.I'm thinking this has something to do with the tons of bloatware that came on this laptop. It's a 2.3 GHz, quad-core CPU with 4GB of RAM. I'd just really like to stop this so it doesn't take 3 minutes to open an Explorer window
