Transfer Old Programs, Information Onto New Computer?

Nov 28, 2012

Joined a few days ago, just got a new computer, hasn't arrived yet. Had posted a purchase template and other things but little help so did the best I could with that decision. Bought my great old computer long ago when I knew nothing at all. I got it second hand from a third party, and didn't get any install disks. Can anyone tell me what old material is transferable to the new computer, and how does one do the transfer.

Connect To Another Computer Using An Ethernet Cable?

Feb 14, 2013

My windows home server has decided to stop communicating with the client machines. The connector software won't connect (reinstalling makes no difference), remote desktop times out, manually shutting down (by pressing the power button) and restarting also fails to correct the problem.I can ping the server (average response time 3ms)The Home Server machine is headless and although there is a connector the only monitor I have doesn't fit the connector.I susoect that the internal battery may have gone flat and may be the servers clock is out of sync with the client machine (but even when the server is asleep its still connected to the mains).

Someone has said that I can connect a laptop to the sever via an ethernet cable but the only instructions I can find say that I have to set the IP address on both machines to be the same - Is this correct or is there another way of connecting?

Would like to get general thoughts on the best way to transfer programs from old computer to my new 8-core Windows Pro 64-bit(new install) computer. One of my areas that I'm concerned with is that several of the programs I'm wanting to transfer were purchased over the internet & downloaded with no physical media involved. Otherwise, I would just do the install via the install cd's

"Your Computer Is Not Digital Cable Ready, You Will Not Be Able To Set It Up For Use With A Cable Card"

Apr 30, 2012

I have a new gaming computer with a high end video card and plenty of RAM and a high speed cable Internet connection. I also have a HDHomeRun TV cable unit which is listed to work with MS Media Center. When I set up my Media Center/TV connection it recognizes my HDHomeRun TV connection and all three TV channels via my MCard I got from Comcast cable. But next to the last dialog window, during setting up my TV connection, I got the following message, "Your computer is not digital cable ready. You will not be able to set it up for use with a cable card."

Computer Only Recognizing 2nd Display Via HDMI Cable Intermittently

Aug 5, 2012

I have an HP Pavilion Elite HPE machine, Windows 7, Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics card, connected to an Acer monitor and HDTV. Here's details on my setup:

My Equipment | Building a Home Theater With Your Office PC

My problem is that even though my HDMI cable's plugged into my Radeon graphics card, sometimes the PC only recognizes the Acer monitor and not the receiver (that's connected to the HDMI cable and my HDTV). So I end up having to plug and unplug the HDMI cable several times (sometimes 10+) before it recognizes the HDTV/receiver connection. Is there any setting that would favor the card/PC recognizing the HDMI cable more frequently? I've heard it's a handshake issue, and that maybe using a different type of cable would work. But wondering if there's a setting I could use before switching out cables.

Computer Won't Go Into Sleep Mode When HDMI Cable Is Connected

Nov 9, 2011

I have an Acer Aspire laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I regularly connect it to my TV monitor via HDMI cable and fall asleep watching movies (played on VLC or Windows Media Player). I set the computer to go to sleep after 1 hour.

Multimedia Settings are set to "Allow computer to sleep" under "When Sharing Media" in the Power Management section.

Screensaver is disabled. I have overrided my audio driver, since powercfg command suggested it may be a conflict.

If I am playing a movie without the HDMI cable plugged in, the computer goes into sleep mode right on schedule. It is only when I have the HDMI cable plugged into my TV monitor, that it refuses to enter sleep mode.

Computer Shuts Off Within 5-15 Minutes After Network Cable Is Connected?

Jan 6, 2013

Here are the computer specs of the computer:

Ultimate SP1 64-bit
Xion 600W PSU XON-600F14R-201
Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Motheroboard
nVIDIA nForce 590 SLI Chipset
BIOS Revision 1402
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ 3.15 (15 x 210 FSB)
Muskin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 991587 DDR2-800 SDRAM 5-4-4-12
Koolance EXOS2 Watercooled
OS Drive: Seagate Barracuda ST3500820AS 500GB
DATA Drive: Samsung HD501LJ
NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mpbs Ethernet
Realtek RTL8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mpbs USB 2.0 Network Adapter

The CAT 5 Ethernet cable network cable is attached to our main Linksys WRT320N DD-WRT router ---> Motorola SB5101U DOCSIS 2.0 Cable Modem ---> Coaxial cable from wall outlet. Another computer is also directly connected to the same router via CAT 5 Ethernet cable and two more computers are wirelessly connected to the same router and none of these three PCs are experiencing issues so this should rule out the router as the culprit.if I leave the computer on (even for hours) with no network cable attached to the computer, it does not turn off. But as soon as I plug in the network cable, the PC will shut itself off within 5-15min.Based on the same scenario as described above, here are the troubleshooting attempts I made without success, except for numbers 4 and 6:

1. Switched to different network cable and router port.

2. Disabled Network Adapter connections in "Network adapter settings" for both the onboard ethernet port and wireless adapter.

3. Ran MSCONFIG.EXE and rebooted in diagnostic mode. Only basic Windows services are loaded. No startup programs are loaded.

4. Rebooted in Safe Mode with networking but could not establish any network LAN/WAN connection. Computer did not shut off!

5. Cloned entire hard disk to another hard disk and switched SATA data and power cables on the same computer.

6. Installed fresh Windows on different hard drive on the same computer. Computer did not shut off!

Out of those 6, only numbers 4 and 6 were where the computer remained on and didn't shut off at all after the network cable cable was plugged in.

Ethernet Cable Not Detected

May 26, 2011

One of my Windows 7 computer has been getting an error for 24 hours that the ethernet cable is not detected and it can not connect to the internet. Other Windows 7 computers on the same router/internet connection work fine.I have already tried the following all of which were not successful.

-Plug in a different cable.
-Reboot the computer.
-Disable and then re-enable the connection.
-Restore to a previous system point.
-Inspect the connector for a problem with the pins.
-Look at the device manager for problems.
-Work through the windows troubleshooter.

The device is described as a Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet, although it does not appear to be a separate card and looks to be built into the motherboard. The Motherboard is Alienware 04VFW2 version A02.
