Signal So Poor / When Place The Laptop Right Next To The Router It Receives Excellent Strength?
Jul 11, 2010
I have a Linksys WRT54G2 router right outside of my room and i only catch 2 bars of signal strength. all the other laptops in my household catch excellent signal strength and their range is way farther than where my laptop is from my router. However when i place the laptop right next to the router it receives excellent strength, but as i move away it starts to lose signal. Sometimes it would disconnect at a random time also. my laptop is a dell studio 1555 running on windows 7 and my wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1397 802. 11g Half Mini Card.I'm thinking its the wireless card but i purchased a dell mini running on xp with the same exact wireless card and had no problem with the signal strength.

I'm having the above mentioned problem with my fathers laptop. He's a teacher so we bought the laptop so he could show powerpoint-presentations on projector, but the laptop doesn't work with all projectors. The output is received by the external screen/projector but the projector doesn't realize that there is input. In the classroom that my father teaches this spring the projector will for like 5 or 10 seconds show the pc-screen and then turn off.We have a Sony-TV with VGA-plug so I tried connecting the laptop to our TV (different cable and different external screen). When I connect the cables, the TV doesn't automatically realize that there is a computer-input. But if I force the TV to show the "VGA-channel" the computer screen is shown perfectly on the TV. I believe the problem is similar on the projector, i.e. the screenpicture is sent trough the cable, but there's no "information" that there is a picture. To test if the computer receives information on the cable I tried the setting that the screen should only be seen on the external screen. As soon as I plug in the cable to the PC the screen goes blank, so the PC recognizes the cable. From PB's support homepage I tried installing/reinstalling the video-driver but unfortunately it didn't help.

I encountered a new issue with my PC and I sincerely don't know what to do. In fact, after a while, the monitor is showing no signal. I changed the video card with a brand new one and still my PC will do the same. Is there a worm or software issue or the motherboard miss-fires?

On the right hand side of the taskbar I have the icons for battery life, volume, internet connection, etc. When I used to put the mouse over the internet connection it would show me who I was connected too (SSID) , signal quality, and speed.I began having some issues so I had to remove my Netgear connection and then reconnect.Ever since I did this all that shows up now when I put the mouse over it is now only says: Netgear and Internet access. How do I get the information back. It shows up on my desktop, but not my laptop.

I just bought a Netgear WNA3100 wireless usb adapter for my HP Win 7 64 bit laptop. I have been trying for 2 and half days to figure out why my speed is slow, why i don't have a good signal, and/ or if I do have a bit of a signal to my luck, why my signal comes and goes. I don't have internet at home at the moment because I am trying to save up to go to school. I am picking up a public business signal from a block away (which I have asked for permission to use), but I only am receiving not much of a signal with the Netgear usb wireless adapter.

I have a problem with my Dlink 1310 Wireless Router. For a while now it has been happening but it has finally gotten to the point where I am tired of it happening.Few things I have noticed or have done.1) Watched modem when this happens and never shows sign of droppage in internet2) Updated Firmware for router, and while itse data transfer rates, the problem still persists3) Usually when this happens I will click the network icon on mylaptop/desktop and will see that my router has disappeared from the list of available networks entirely, then returns a few moments later.

Was getting a very weak wireless signal from the router that is 2 rooms and a hallway away (40 ft.)... It was almost like dial-up used to be...Anyway, a friend of mine suggested getting Powerline Network Adapters, HowStuffWorks "How Power-line Networking Works"I spent the money for the kit, ($99 at Office Depot), and installed yesterday afternoon. Getting a great signal now. If you can't or prefer not to run ethernet cable, this is the next best thing...

I have Dell Inspiron N4050 Laptop with Integrated Webcam and running Windows 7 Ultimate edition - 64 bit.I normally call using Gmail's Call phone service. I want to setup so that I can use Internal microphone in laptop to transmit my voice and hear the incoming call voice using external speakers.I normally keep external speakers connected to laptop for listening to music, but whenever I have to make a call, I have to remove the speaker cables and connect headphone cables in audio jack. So, I am looking up for solution to do make audio/video calls using external speakers and without needing to connect headphones to transmit my voice to caller.

Recently received my U400 and the microphone worked great. However, at some point during a Skype call, my partner could not hear me very well and was only able to hear static on my end.
I checked my sound setting and under the "Recording" tab, the Conexant Internal Microphone was very active and "loud" (as if I was constantly talking). I went under properties and checked "Listen to this device" and all I could hear was static. I tried talking but couldn't hear myself. Lowering microphone level didn't seem to change the amount of static I hear from my microphone. I turned off mic boosts and enhancements, but it didn't change static.
Internal microphone is set as default device. Stereo mix is similarly active and loud. Driver version is 8.54.19.0. (up to date). Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
Tried uninstalling driver and letting Windows install a new driver, but problem persisted. Pretty much can't use microphone to record, but it shows that it is active and is receiving a lot of sound somehow.

use my laptop just fine down a 40 foot hall way and through a kitchen and 2 more rooms wirelessly(admitedly with a mediocre connection).
About 2 days ago it was giving me sporatic messages after a restart claiming my network settings did not match the ones saved on my laptop. The only change that was made was adding all but one roomates devices to an access list on the router (since the jerk wouldnt shut off bit torrent while people were working). Some other people were noticing some screwy occurances too but dont recall the symtoms so I just set it back to factory default and removed the access list. Everyone else seemed to be fine
Yesterday I cannot see the router on my laptop, I cannot see my neighbors (sporaticly I usually would see 1 bar pop up but now I can't find it at all) I can pick up my router wirelessly only when I have direct line of sight to the router and only 4/5 bars 0,o , so that rules out a lot of choices in its self since it sees it, just not very well.

I am having trouble connecting my girlfriends laptop to the internet using her Windows 7 laptop via a Dlink router with Virgin Media. The laptop previously had Windows Vista installed but I recently upgraded it to Windows 7. For about 2 weeks the laptop connected to the wireless router fine, but stopped working about 4 days ago for some unknown reason out of the blue.
We have tried various methods to fix it, including disabling the wireless network adapter and enabling it again, we have tried updating the driver for the adapter but we get a message saying that the driver currently installed is the latest driver. It also won't let me roll back to the previous driver as that option is faded out in the properties box.
I have took her laptop to my house today to try and connect it to my router (which is also with Virgin and is working fine on my computers at my house) and the laptop won't let me connect to the network and it keeps saying there are no network connections available. I understand that usually it displays a list of connections you can log on to, but the laptop is not finding any connections at all.
On Thursday we attempted to connect to the internet by plugging in the blue wire that came with the router and that works fine. It's just it will not connect wirelessly. What really baffles us with this problem is that it worked fine for a couple of weeks then suddenly stopped working. Could it be an update that was installed that has caused the problem perhaps?
I have also tried using System Restore but that hasn't fixed the problem either. The wireless adapter is called: Atheros AR5005G Wirelss Network Adapter.

I have a customer that has just installed a new Dlink N300 router and cable modem internet. He has both a desk top which is hardwired to the router and a laptop which is using the wireless. The desk top does not have any problem with a connection but when he buts the laptop in hibernation it can not find the wireless connection. The odd thing about it is that even though he can not find his own network he can see other networks around him. Any ideas out there on how to solve this issue. This is the second router that we have installed so I am guessing it is not defective equipment.
