New Windows 7 user and I am connected to the internet via the wireless network so it is definitely connected and still fast, however I see an orange asterisk on the wireless icon instead of the usual signal strength.

On the right hand side of the taskbar I have the icons for battery life, volume, internet connection, etc. When I used to put the mouse over the internet connection it would show me who I was connected too (SSID) , signal quality, and speed.I began having some issues so I had to remove my Netgear connection and then reconnect.Ever since I did this all that shows up now when I put the mouse over it is now only says: Netgear and Internet access.How do I get the information back. It shows up on my desktop, but not my laptop.

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 router right outside of my room and i only catch 2 bars of signal strength. all the other laptops in my household catch excellent signal strength and their range is way farther than where my laptop is from my router.However when i place the laptop right next to the router it receives excellent strength, but as i move away it starts to lose signal. Sometimes it would disconnect at a random time also. my laptop is a dell studio 1555 running on windows 7 and my wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1397 802. 11g Half Mini Card.I'm thinking its the wireless card but i purchased a dell mini running on xp with the same exact wireless card and had no problem with the signal strength.

I recently purchased the Dell XPS 14z and it has been working fine, however when I take it out to work (where there's no wifi connections) a red 'x' now appears on the wifi icon in the task tray. Usually it just shows an orange star and is essentially 'pending' connections. When I try and use my BlackBerry Bold 9900 to connect using the mobile internet it says that it can't connect as the wifi radio may be off? This hasn't happened before and I've tried everything to troubleshoot it with no luck.

I just bought a Netgear WNA3100 wireless usb adapter for my HP Win 7 64 bit laptop. I have been trying for 2 and half days to figure out why my speed is slow, why i don't have a good signal, and/ or if I do have a bit of a signal to my luck, why my signal comes and goes. I don't have internet at home at the moment because I am trying to save up to go to school. I am picking up a public business signal from a block away (which I have asked for permission to use), but I only am receiving not much of a signal with the Netgear usb wireless adapter.

I recently upgraded my wireless router from a D-link Di-614 to a Linksys e3000. A buddy of mine recommended it saying he didnt have wifi issues from the top of his house all the way to the basement. I live in a bungalo home, and so the router is on one side of the house, and my Desk and macbook pro is on the otherside. Im getting 4 bars in windows 7, its showing good connectivity, but its constantly disconnecting, even when its stable, its running very slow. When im close to the router is works perfect. I design for a living and am constantly transferring files to clients. So this has become a problem, Im constantly having to unplug my laptop and walk over to the router to send/recieve large files. Any suggestion on what i can do? Could there be something wrong with the router or my laptop ?

I have new Acer Aspire 5739G laptop and fresh Windows 7 on it.
The wireless card is Intel WiFi Link 5100.
The problem is that wireless works only in short distance with access point - max distance is about 5 meters.
In that distance everything works fine.
But if I go farther or to another room it disconnects.
With other laptops all works fine even on very large distance.
I tried such things (nothing helped):
* uninstall, reinstall or update drivers
* install newest drivers from Acer site
* install newest drivers from Intel site
* tested with xp & vista drivers
* on network connection properties unchecked all things except tcp/ip v4 protocol (microsoft networking,sharing, link layer topology,QoS, TCP/IP v6 ..)
* disabled homegroup
* on adapter properties changed signal frequencies (1,6,11),
* on adapter properties changed standard type to work with: 802.11 b or g
* on adapter properties changed signal to MAX, don't use power saving
* disabled Internet security, firewall
* Changed access point signal broadcasting with no encryption or wpa
* it disconnects from another access point the same way (problem with system not wifi AP)
Maybe something forgot to say, but there was few hours of testing and can't fix it .

Was getting a very weak wireless signal from the router that is 2 rooms and a hallway away (40 ft.)... It was almost like dial-up used to be...Anyway, a friend of mine suggested getting Powerline Network Adapters, HowStuffWorks "How Power-line Networking Works"I spent the money for the kit, ($99 at Office Depot), and installed yesterday afternoon. Getting a great signal now. If you can't or prefer not to run ethernet cable, this is the next best thing...

I am running windows 7 home premium 64 bit. And an atheros AR5B95 wireless network adaptor.Two weeks ago I discovered rootkit 0access on my computer, and after much hassle, performed a factory restore to fix the situation. Since then my computer has been mostly unable to detect wireless connections. I say mostly because upon occassion it will see my wifi connection, but be unable to connect to it, and it will soon drop seeing the connection moments after anyway. I performed a hard reset of my modem with at&t customer service, and walked through every possibility that it could be a modem issue. This was further proven by an additional laptop having no issue with the wifi connection, and that my laptop is having this problem with every wifi connection. [code]

I have been running windows 7 on my computer for quite some time and haven't had very many huge problems until recently. Now, sometimes when I start up my computer, it keeps on playing the asterisk sound that you hear whenever a warning message pops up. But when it happens nothing ever pops up, and that warning sound plays nonstop every couple of seconds and it is driving me insane. I looked at task manager to see if there was some process that would be causing that error message and I found nothing. I also went to msconfig to make sure that all start up programs were disabled and they were. The problem I am having now doesn't happen all of the time but when it does, it doesn't stop and requires restarting my computer.
And for the record, I am running windows 7 64 bit.

I am setting up a new Acer laptop and cannot access the internet via my home wifi network. I have 2 other laptops connected to the network and running fine. The new pc is running 64 bit Windows 7 (the others run XP) and has an Atheros AR5B93 Wireless Network Adapter. When I pan over the wireless icon in my taskbar, it says "Limited access" beside my home wifi signal.

I run Windows 7 64bit os with an Orange high Speed (!) mobile broadband dongle (515m). The software (Internet Everywhere) stopped working months ago and after much arguing with Orange, they admitted that it was a software compatibility problem with my os but promised that an update would be coming soon. They gave a workaround which meant the dongle worked on dial up (with associated speed). However, after waiting months for the update, it's finally arrived but it still doesn't work! Just like the last software version, after installing it clean, it crashes at start up and won't operate. Last night I had to stay up hours to roll back my system to get the dial up working again as it prevented that from working too. I'm really sick of this and Orange's response has been woefully unsatisfactory, bordering on insulting. The latest gem was to uninstall everything internet connected then download the software! How? This has been pretty much the level of response from Orange. I'm about ready to cancel my contract with them for breach of contract.
Oh, my laptop is an Acer Aspire 7540.

Recently, I've re-imaged my computer back to factory settings. I've connected to my home's network, and everything was normal for a few days. And now, I have an odd icon in place of my wireless connection strength. I'm still connected to the internet (as I'm posting this), and I can still browse like normal. There has been some unreliability... Lately I've been monitoring my network usage with Task Manager and I'll go from the normal 1.8%-2.3% to 0% randomly, for random amounts of time. I'm not sure if the other two computers on the network share this problem, but it seems to be more with the connection itself than my laptop. I don't know what this icon is, and even though it doesn't seem to be affecting my wireless performance, I'd like to know what it is and what it means.

On a Windows 7 ultimate system (svc pack 1), when I try to open any file in the my documents folder I get an error message that says that this operation "needs elevation".So I picked one particular file that I couldn't open and I looked at the owner in the security tab. Indeed the owner was not set to me. It was set to "Administrator". Although I'm logged in as an administrator, my login has my name in it, so this was not me.By the way, I tried copying the file to another drive. Windows allows that, but again I can't open it. Then I deleted this copy, which windows did without complaint. I'm dumbfounded. Windows thinks it's perfectly acceptable for me to have rights to delete a file that I have no right to even look at.

I seem to have a problem with my WiFi. Left-clicking the wireless icon in system tray doesn't work as in literally nothing happens. When I open the network and sharing center and click on "connect to a network" then also nothing happens. Right now it's only a minor problem, because my laptop auto-connects to networks it already knows but when I want to connect to a public WiFi in a cafe for example I can't look up any networks.Also I'd like to point out that setting up a new connection to connect to a WiFi works but for that I need to already know the network name and security type. Windows can't find any problems either and I've reinstalled all network adapter drivers.

Is it usual for that process to take up 500-600K or memory? I don't recall seeing it take up that much space before. Just curiosity because if i run some program that requires lots of memory, it starts to lagg.
