Is it usual for that process to take up 500-600K or memory? I don't recall seeing it take up that much space before. Just curiosity because if i run some program that requires lots of memory, it starts to lagg.
View 8 RepliesI have encountered a very high memory usage in one svchost.exe process on my win 7 64-bit. Attached screen shots of process associated with it. Some times it goes up about 300Mb too. I have tried several suggestions already available for this issue. But No luck. I've tried by updating Windows (ref), scanning PC by TREND officescan. Also when I tried with only with Microsoft Services using Selective Startup option in msconfig as suggested here, issue remains same. (With that can I conclude that it is related with malware?)
Also need to note that the WLAN AutoConfig service (wlansvc) associated with that svchost.exe make sense as I've encountered some problem uninstalling wireless router software.I feel that that has not been properly uninstalled. how to check/or rectify it.
To keep my computer running quick, I usually skim through my processes at boot up and see what can be trimmed off from the starting processes, or just from my computer. Host Process for Windows Services shows up twice on the list. Right now at 125,080k and 75,476k memory. I don't recognize these processes or why they are using so much processing. Any advice for tuning those down or speeding up my PC in general (it automatically runs defrag, disc cleanup, standard accessories, etc. once a week).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).
Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Windows 7.
On a Windows 7 ultimate system (svc pack 1), when I try to open any file in the my documents folder I get an error message that says that this operation "needs elevation".So I picked one particular file that I couldn't open and I looked at the owner in the security tab. Indeed the owner was not set to me. It was set to "Administrator". Although I'm logged in as an administrator, my login has my name in it, so this was not me.By the way, I tried copying the file to another drive. Windows allows that, but again I can't open it. Then I deleted this copy, which windows did without complaint. I'm dumbfounded. Windows thinks it's perfectly acceptable for me to have rights to delete a file that I have no right to even look at.

my computer lately has been starting up a bit slower then usual i don't really know what/if theres anything wrong with it or if im just crazy/paranoid I reformat it once a month to make sure its always got that fresh install performance we all know and love. theres been no BSOD'S/random popups/errors/or any other strange activity so i kind of doubt its malware related but im not ruling anything out. whatever you guys could recommend i do to ensure its not malware

What I first did to install: I change the bios to boot from the Optical Drive Put the Windows 7 CD into the optical drive.Follow the on screen instructions for the windows install. Windows copies the files, extracts and installs. The system reboots. When Windows attempts to start for the first time the windows logo comes up and does its animation. The system then reboots. The screen comes up that tells me windows didn�t start properly and do I want to try safe mode, etc etc. If I do safe mode drivers scroll until it gets to disk.sys. At this point it freezes for a minute or two and reboots.
Things I�ve tried:
I have pared down to 1 stick of 2 GB of the ram
I�ve tried using both of the other sticks of ram (individually) in case I had a bad stick
I�ve tried with an older ATI PCI video card in case it was a video card compatibility issue
I�ve tried reformatting and deleting the system partition and reinstalling
I�ve tried reformatting from another working computer and reinstalling
I�ve tried many windows repairs, often it says it can�t fix it, or tries something and restarts.
Once it was �repairing disk errors� and it did that in about a minute. Didn�t work. Othertimes it gives me a failure during setup, tries to fix it, didn�t work.I�ve reset the bios to optimized I�ve tried manually changing the multiplier of the ram in the bios. fter about 25 -30 reboots bios resets and repairs it finally looked like it was working, did some more installation stuff, restarted, and started the damn reboot sequence over and over� Now when I run in safe mode the last line to come up is Loaded: windowssystem32driversClasspnp.sys Looks like it made it a step farther, for no reason, I really didn�t change anything except repeated attempts. Many more attempts at repairs and resets haven�t gotten any further.
I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional on a 60GB OCZ Vertex 3 and the drive is down to a remaining 15GB out of 55.7 total available space. This is confusing because my last several installs of the exact same OS on the exact same size drives took up much less space. Even after installing several programs like Photoshop and Office, I still had 24GB to spare on my last install with a 60GB Agility 2.

WLM was quick as one could want till two days ago. Don't know what happened but now changing from one folder to another takes 10 to 15 seconds. Where to start looking for the holdup?
I have been trying to fix these BSODS for a while, and have been told it is a wireless adaptor driver causing the problem. However I have uninstalled and updated that driver, and whilst crashes are less frequent they still occur. Also games which were previously very stable now crash/freeze every time. Fixes I've tried:
Running anti virus (AVG)
Running a registry cleaner
Running a Malware cleaner
Replacing old RAM with newer and more RAM.
Removing Daemon tools
Cleaning the inside of the case, (graphics card is not overheating) Uninstalling and updating wireless adaptor drivers Uninstalling and updating graphics card drivers. The usual system restores/CHKDSK etc. I've attached files as per the forum's BSOD rules. Below is my system, it is about 4 years old and originally came with Vista, which was upgraded with windows 7.

I am getting this error all the time with Windows 7. I open a text file I want to edit, then go to save my changes and I get this error:"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".I have full admin rights, running Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1. From a bit of research I have seen where many others have been experiencing this problem or something similar too. The only "fix" (that doesn't work all the time) is to close explorer.exe and then restart it to "release the handle"? Anyway, this is not acceptable for all the money and time I spent upgrading/configuring this new OS from XP -where I never had this problem- and seriously cuts down my productivity.Has Microsoft even acknowledged this as a bug yet? I can duplicate this scenario the second or third time I try to edit/save/delete a text file and I know that explorer.exe is the problem or a big part of it in any case. I don't want to go back to XP x64 but having to deal with this headache 10-20 times a day is just too much to ask.The file here is a game's map script & has to be saved to a .pk3 and then loaded into the program's root before it can run so i know othing else is running the file. No apps running in taskmngr either.

Surprisingly there wasn't as much dust coming out as I expected. My computer usually runs under 50 C when just browsing the web, but now its at 58. Playing a game, it usually runs at 63ish but now it runs up to 74 C. I even have a laptop fan under my computer. I have no idea whats going on, usually after I use my compressed air, it goes back to normal, but what now?

View 4 Replies View RelatedNew dell n7110/win7sp1x64.At startup on new machine from dell, process explorer (procexp64.exe) lists 81 processes running (seems like way too many - compared to xp with maybe 25 at startup). But which processes I can turn off is a question for another day. OK, read carefully, at least 15 processes in PE show " Path: error opening process". PID, CPU, Private Bytes, and working set columns are shown for these "problem" processes, but nothing after that, ie, description, company name etc. For all other listed running processes (with known paths), all info is shown in all columns. The problem processes include some important ones, services, crss, ism, wininit, winlogon, that must to be working for the computer to work, and everything seems to be working properly, and no cpu spikes or other weird stuff is happening. Right clicking properties on these problem processes, properties window pops up as normal, but shows "version: n/a, build: n/a, path: error opening process, no command line, no current directory, autostart location: n/a, Parent: non existent process (708), user: access denied. Again, this info can not be correct since the computer is working. And then, after a few minutes, another window pops up and says PE has stopped working, and closes the program. Now, if this was the whole story, I would go to sysinternals with this, but read on... Task manager running simultaneously with PE lists 83 processes running, more processes than PE, and also ~5 different processes than PE, and PE lists some processes running that TM doesn't list. So PE and TM show different running processes at the same time. How can that be? For the processes that PE shows "error opening", e.g., crss, etc., when I click properties in TM for the same process, sometimes I get the usual/normal pop-up window listing the path, and all the other data as normal, suggesting the process is working properly. But sometimes when I click properties in TM for the processes that PE shows "error opening", I get no pop-up at all, nothing for that process. So, IMO, it's not just a PE glitch, something is actually wrong here. This is a new machine, with PE the only 3rd party installation. I have installed several dell driver updates, but this problem occurred before I installed them. Also, remember PE and TM simultaneously list some different running processes and TM also fails to show paths, etc.

machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)
versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)
browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.
normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).
I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

I just built a new computer and started with 8GB of memory. A few weeks down the line I purchased another set of the same memory because it was on such a good deal and had great reviews (newegg). It also was working well for me, so I figured maybe more could be better.
I haven't noticed any decrease/increase in system performance except Alt-Tabbing has recently got slower. Also, Windows 7 was sitting tight on 1.3gb to 2gb of memory usage prior to the extra 8 (now 16) being added. Even when gaming, it went up to like 3gb. Now that I've added the extra it's going up to 4.5gb or better. Also, is it possible to speed up my alt-tabbing? It seems to have a good 3-4 second pause in it instead of being immediate like it was.

I recently bought 2x1GB Ram Sticks for a Dell DimensionE510It has a Pentium4 2.80Gh Processorand factory 1 GB RAMIt's currently running Windows 7 x64hen I put the new RAM sticks in the system recognizes the new memory says it has 3.0 GB of ram and runs until I start actually using to new memory, as in start running more programs simultaneously and it crashes and I get two BSOD*. As far as I know the sticks match the motherboard, as in that's what I was told.*"Memory Management" and "PFN List Corrupt"As far as I understand it is a driver issue, but I honestly am not sure.
View 6 Replies View RelatedTo start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Just a few days ago I've started to have an issue where after my computer is running for a couple hours all processes continually increase the amount of memory they are using until I get an out of memory error. Here is a pic of it around 75%. I have 8 gigs of ram (kingston) that before this never went above 4gigs of use, so not sure what is causing this suddenly.

-At work, I want to IGNORE the DHCP address that the wireless network gives me, and force an IP address. Configuring the router to reserve an IP for my MAC is not an option due to a bloated corporate bureaucracy.

Since Beta, I've been getting an error message "Not enough storage is available to process this command", which is accompanied by a stop code 0xc142 when launching items like Task Manager. I've seen the first error is typically related to the Windows Desktop Heap, but I've set from the original (2GB if I'm reading it correctly), to 4GB of space. I'm running a system with 1.7TB of available drive space (20GB on the OS drive as it's a smaller SSD drive) and 6GB of RAM. I've tried varying the windows page file from 500MB to the system-controlled 6GB with the same result.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I don't touch my computer for a while, I get CPU 100% (or CPU 50% on this dual core). As soon as I touch the mouse, in one second the culprit escapes. I know it's something under svchost.exe and I know I could see which svchost with Process Explorer or Svchost Viewer. But since the whole process disappears as soon as I touch mouse, it's pretty difficult to pinpoint. Svchost Viewer doesn't list all the processes in one screen, scrolling is needed. So it's basically always hidden and I can't scroll to it as that kills the process.How do I find out what exact process inside svchost.exe is eating my CPU during idle? My goal is to prevent the offending process altogether from starting.By the way, which settings of Windows Defender can cause this CPU 100% on idle problem, I didn't yet try shutting down all the settings there.
