But all my friends and everybody I know that owns a computer have a pirated version of windows running on their computers (Third world problems).I recently read somewhere that pirated Windows CD are backdoored and viruses are installed with windows installation. Is it true? Is it possible for an attacker to do something like that?

May 20, 2012I am trying to load a new copy of home premium windows 7. A new partition has been formed from the whole disk and formatted The program starts to download the windows 32 files then on reboot it stalls and reverts to a load in safe mode/command prompt etc a blue screen flashes on for one second unable to pause it and read.The PC has had window 7 on before but it crashed and corrupted hence the rebuild so it is windows 7 ready.I have run all the hardware diagnostics ok they came with the Compaq PC.I have tried to install on to a brand new out of the box hard drive same problem.I have successfully installed window xp on the original disk this has loaded ok.This disk was used ok to install windows 7 originally..I am beginning to think the disk is faulty but it does download a lot of files could it be corrupt.

Feb 26, 2010I am currently planning on upgrading one of my PC's that has a genuine retail version of 64-bit Win7 Home Premium installed.
I am planning on replacing my ageing (E5200/P35/DDR2/HDD) hardware with fresh stuff (Core i3 530/H55/DDR3/SSD).
The way I understand it is that if I were to just replace my MOBO and CPU I could just plug my old hard drive into the new mobo and use the windows disc to repair any problems it may have. However, I am planning on upgrading to an SSD as well.
My question is this, if I make a bare metal backup of Win7 off my current hard drive onto the SSD using something like Clonezilla, and then boot off the SSD once my new system is built, will there be any issues that the Win7 disc won't solve? I don't want to get all this new kit just to find I need a new OS as well.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.
EDIT: I should add that I currently have 3 hard drives but I only have my OS on my primary hard drive so backing up my music etc isn't an issue. The SSD I'm getting is 64GB so should be fine for Win7 Install.

Mar 17, 2012How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:
1. It is familiar :-)
2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.
3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.
4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.
5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).
I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.

Jun 12, 2011I'm reimaging one of my home systems that I intend to use as a "sterile" system (I will visit very a very limited selection sites on it, such as banking sites). I'm considering establishing the network location as "Public" instead of "Home", rationale being this would help prevent cross infection from other computers on my home network if they get a worm or virus. I do have friends that come over and hop on my network sometimes and who knows what contamination their systems have. Is this being overly paranoid? Will it cause annoying problems for this sterile system or other systems in my home network? I don't intend to share anything on this system with other computers on my home network. Seems to me that this ought to be the recommended setting for any computer always ... you can always share files using a USB drive if you really need to. Thoughts? Again maybe I am being overly paranoid. Back in the day there used to be worms that would look for ways to hop from system to system over the network, maybe that's much much harder these days. I do have a router between the DSL modem and my home network and I do run Norton Internet Security on all my systems?

Mar 26, 2011My 2 year old $400 Acer laptop that has win 7 32 bit home edition locked up while surfing last night and I cannot get it to open.I tried safe mode it hangs up on the starting windows screen. I hit F8 and tried the launch start up repair function to no avail.When the laptop locked up the screen went off white like someone was trying to IM me and nothing opened. I pulled the battery out to shut the laptop down since I didn't like the look of what was happening and none of the buttons or other prompts would work.I have a current version of McAffe and was using Firefox.

The Home icon is not always present, depending on which shortcut I use to open IE9. And the down arrow next to it is generally not there. I've tried turning on the Command Bar, which helps but takes up more screen real estate than I'd like, because I have quite a few items in the Favorites bar. In addition, the HP store which sold me the laptop installed 4gb of RAM neglecting to tell me that the 32bit version of 7 only supported up to 3. At any rate, I am hoping to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 Bit edition.But while there is a glut of information online about how to upgrade from Starter, there is little to nothing about Home Basic. Do I have to buy a full copy of 7 Home Premium 64 Bit? Can I buy an Anytime Upgrade that is meant for Starter and apply it to my computer?

Oct 8, 20125 month old Dell XPS 8500 Win 7 64 bit Pro as main computer connected by Wired Adapter, Upgraded Gateway 5632E also running Win 7 64 bit pro as second connected by Wireless. Both running Kapersky successfully. no network problems for 5 mo.
Both were successfully linked using homegroup. Had to take Gateway to a remote location to do a business demo. While there had to link to a local public WiFi. While connecting made mistake and left homegroup.
When Gateway returned to homebase a few days later it was fine, had no problems finding wireless but could not see or rejoin Dell machine homegroup. It would let me set up a new homegroup.
Went to Dell box and found 1) homegroup no longer existed, 2) router and network and wireless printing no longer found - Red X on the taskbar) even though internet was still working fine.
Took nearly a week of trying differernt fixes, on adapter- off adapter- different adapter reboot network, router, even updated router firmware (Yes I went through every ipconfig reset, renew, redecorate etc. I've used netsh functions to try to get evrything to reset. Changes services.msc settings per other posts. Finally in desperation, deleted every sub key in the registry related to network locational awareness and got the Dell to find the network, let me set it up as a "home" network and then even see the invitation to join the Gateway's homegroup.
Then I hit a wall- when I try to join- Win 7 says I can't join the homegroup because the network is not a "home network". Of course troubleshooting is useless and goes into an endless loop. Have searched in desperation for any way to make Win 7 return to a clean slate so it can sense that it really is on a home network without success. Applied the fix-it and hotpatch for when Win 7 gets stuck in public mode. No joy. Deleted the hide wizard subkey as suggested elsewhere. No Joy. Gut feeling says problem must lie in the NLA or peer networking somewhere but where?
Does anyone know of a method or set of steps (short of a clean reinstall of Win 7) to completely clear every thing the OS knows about my network and force it to acknowlege my network is a home network? Is there a registry hack that will clear the problem?
I know I could abandon the homegroup and do conventional file/print share but I am concerned that using that solution won't last as whatever is screwing up the homegroup could eventually screw regular sharing and then I'm back to reformating/reinstalling. I'm just about ready to join the Apple folks so I never have to work on Windows again.

When I try to copy/move files by drag and drop from the 500Mb to the 2Tb it just sits there analysing files and locks up explorer. I tried using FBackup and had the same problem.Also, I cannot transfer files across the wireless network from an XP laptop, although that used to work.

Now this netbook did not come back with a burner, which i was aware of anyway. They do recommend a usb flash drive with the capacity of 12 gb's. I do not want to have to spend more money on another gadget just to make a copy of it. I tried setting my computer to boot from DVD and re install windows 7 but when i do this is just ignores my windows 7 disc and goes straight to the black screen with your copy of windows 7 is not genuine. I even tried booting from a flash drive and it still wouldn't work.

Unauthenticated Copy Of Windows 7
Jan 27, 2011I purchased a used HP Netbook 110 with Win7 on it, and the first time we turned it on it updated Win7 with the result that we now have an unauthenticated copy. The box the unit came in said it was sold with XP SP3, so I'm guessing the prevoius owner loaded an unauthenticated copy of Win7 on. There is a product code sticker on the bottom of the netbook but no product is actually specified -- I'm guessing it's XP. As the netbook did not come with any CDs (no drives to use them in) would a computer shop restore to XP without me having to purchase the OS? It seems I am "entitled" to one, but don't have the means to load it onto the machine. Or should I get a copy of Win7?
My machines are running XP but they are Dell desktops and I don't know if that would work -- most probably not. Any ideas anyone? This is my first experience with Win7, so I'm not sure if purchasing a copy is a good idea. I've stayed away from it until now -- I actually purchase a computer the week Win7 was released and fought with Dell to get it delivered with XP.
