Make My Windows 7 Machine Absolutely VPN And Tunnel Proof?

Jan 3, 2012

I noticed an interesting attack on my fully patched windows 7 home premium system at the standard user level: I don't know exactly how this was done, but I do have some traces (Keep in mind that I had disabled UPnP services beforehand):

1. Auto proxy checker had executed.

2. Teredo Tunneling and about 15 ISATAP tunneling adapters were created.

3. Malware successfully bypassed my two-way firewall and transmitted to the outside.

It looks like malware is able to successfully use ipv6 Teredo Tunneling and ISATAP tunneling to confuse my two-way firewall and use tunneling loops to send traffic outside. I had UPnP blocked, but they used tunneling tricks to bypass the firewall rules.Because the use of tunneling loops bypassed my firewall rules I would like to permanently disable the actual services for VPN and tunneling on my Windows 7 machine. What services need to be disabled to make my Windows 7 machine absolutely VPN and tunnel proof?

How To Make Windows 7 Machine Boot Up Quickly

Apr 27, 2012

I have read many articles on how to make your computer boot quickly. I have tried several, but after a month or so they become very slow again. I have four laptops and three PCs in my home. While they are from different manufacturers, they are all no more then a year old and running Windows 7 Home Premium. With my Internet service I have Norton installed. My newest computer can take up to 2 full minutes, while one of the laptops can be as quick as 45-50 seconds. Specifically what is the magic formula or method of how I can get all my systems to boot up quickly and continue to do so in future?

How To Setup VPN Tunnel For Windows 7

Mar 14, 2011

A few years ago I followed the instructions on the zunta blog to set up a vpn tunnel from my work PC (win xp) to my home PC (win xp) using openSSH and putty. Im not a network guy but I followed the directions and eventually got it working. After a year things changed and I didnt need it anymore, but now I need it again. My home Pc now runs windows 7 and the directions are 5 years out of date. Can someone please point me to a tutorial explaining how to set up an ssh tunnel from a putty client to win 7 server? Hopefully it will be easier with Win 7, doesn't Win 7 has something like open ssh built in?

Proof Is In For Cause Of Poor Ivy Bridge Overclocking Temperature

May 13, 2012

After a ton of speculation, a bit of denial, and a ton of testing we finally have our answer. The thermal interface material change made by Intel when it went from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge is indeed the cause of the excessive temperatures weve observed while overclocking. The first accusation was made in late-April by Overclockers.com, however proving it wasn't easy. The Japanese division of PC Watch somehow managed to remove the integrated heat spreader from a Core i7 3770k, along with the stock binding and grease. They then proceed to replace it with aftermarket alternatives, and the results speak for themselves.

Which Office Fonts Are Absolutely Necessary

Jul 21, 2011

Which Office 2010 Home and Student Edition fonts are absolutely necessary? Or to put it another way, which fonts (that are typically installed in a normal Office installation) is it safe to delete? There are waaay too many of these dubiously styled fonts cluttering my Windows 7 Pro system; I want to pare things down and make room for higher quality fonts.

Startup Repair Forces Itself To Run And Then Does Absolutely Nothing

Oct 31, 2012

Earlier this morning I was on my laptop, and I must have knocked it or something, because the battery fell out and as a result it shut down. A minor annoyance I thought, but nothing extreme.

I then tried to start the computer up again and it told me "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"

This had come up before and I always just pressed "Start windows normally" and it works fine. However, this time when I tried it, it didn't work fine. The windows logo didn't come up on the "Starting Windows" screen, and it came up with the "Windows is loading files..." bar that typically comes up on startup repair.

I figured hey, I'll let it do it's thing. It came up with the grey background (The one that it typically loads startup repair on) but it just stayed like that. No box coming up telling me the progress. Nothing, just a screen. The mouse cursor is there and I can move it, but nothing happens.

I thought it might just be slow, went out for a cigarette, came back and nothing had changed. I shut the laptop down and tried to run start up repair. The same thing happened. I shut it down again, pressed ESC and tried to run system recovery. Same thing happened. I tried to run safe mode and the same thing happened again. I tried to run the last known good configuarion and - you guessed it - same thing again.

I have a HP Pavilion g6 with Windows 7 and that's all I know about it. I don't have the windows 7 discs since I left them when I came to uni - it's under warranty but I also left the recipt so I can't take it back either ha.

Absolutely Nothing Listed In Device And Printer Window

Nov 21, 2011

When I go to the device and printer window there is nothing listed. There are printers and devices on the computer because everything works with the exception of the Bluetooth. The printer prints, but I have no way of knowing what is in the queue. This may have never worked since the beginning. I don't know if this is related, but, Internet Explorer does not work. I have downloaded it at least 4 times with the same results. It will not open.

Only Left Speaker Works - Absolutely No Sound On Right One

Aug 12, 2012

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with a Realtek HD Audio sound card. Whenever I use several headphones in the front jack, they all work perfectly fine. However, whenever I have my speakers (I tried using 2 different pairs of speakers to make sure it wasn't just one pair being affected) SECURELY inserted into the back green port of my computer, there is sound only coming from the left speaker while the right speaker is playing absolutely no sound. This happened to both pairs of speakers that I own.

I have tried the following and none worked:
- Update drivers
- Disable speaker and then enable
- Switching from back jack to front jack (vice versa)
- Balancing so that both L and R sounds are at an equal level

None of these common solutions that I found on this site have worked.

Connecting 1 Windows 7 Machine And 1 Windows Xp Machine To Share Files

Feb 6, 2011

ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers

-one is a windows xp 32
-one is a windows 7 64

ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen

Can't Open A Shared File On A Windows 7 Machine If It Is Already Open On An XP Machine In Same Network

Jan 23, 2012

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

Installing Windows 7 Using An Old HDD On An Old Machine To Install Windows 7 On A New Machine?

So basically, I want to use the HDD from my old computer, install W7 onto the SSD, then transfer the drive to my new computer, and use it on the machine and just reinstall all my other files.

Networking - Machine Can Only See One Another Machine

Aug 18, 2009

I have a small three PC home network. Two PC are running Windows 7 and one running Vista.

All three machines have the same homegroup settings. The ability to view machines on the network is very patchy. One machine can see the others, while another machine can only see one other machine. Sometimes machines cannot see any others on the network.

All machines are connected wirelessly with strong signals through a BT 2700HGV Business Hub router. All of the machines can access the Internet without problems.

All machines run Eset Smart Security with the Windows firewall is turned off.

Any advice to create a stable network would be appreciated.

One (of Several) Windows 7 PCs Can't See XP Machine

Nov 27, 2012

My LAN consists of a gateway/router and 4 PCs A, B, C and D. A thru C are Windows 7/64; D is XP32/SP3.

Until a few days ago, everyone saw and could access everyone. Then C stopped seeing D. C can ping D, but it cant see it (in Network or in the network map).

C can still see itself and also A and B.

A, B and D can still see everyone.

Ive tried all the usual fixes from this and other forums: verified that all have same Workgroup name (no Homegroup); checked the IPs and other adapter settings; checked sharing settings; disabled Cs firewall; rebooted everything and everybody. Also tried to use the LLTD hotfix, but Windows reported that my XP-SP3 install already has it.

Windows 7 (64) Machine Not Booting?

Jun 6, 2011

Have had a string of problems pop up over the course of the week. First thing that happened was that I had an error window pop up stating that there was a hiccup with a hard drive (don't have the details of error). Desktop rebooted and system started up fine but then noticed that most desktop icons were missing and program listings were missing from STARTUP.Friday night got a malware for WIN 7 Antivirus Software.I used Spybot to clean the system. Back to normal now but Sat morning while looking at video on MSN screen went black and system rebooted. Next came grey window stating that system files could not be found to start up.

Tried restoring last good setting but still not bootable. Noticed in windows error report that Win 7 was on (F:). Got into DOS mode and discovered my drive C: is now drive F: all other HDs are correct. Current C: is blank no file or directories.
