Which Office 2010 Home and Student Edition fonts are absolutely necessary? Or to put it another way, which fonts (that are typically installed in a normal Office installation) is it safe to delete? There are waaay too many of these dubiously styled fonts cluttering my Windows 7 Pro system; I want to pare things down and make room for higher quality fonts.
View 7 RepliesMy computer has Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System, 32 bit system type and I use Office 2010. Microsoft Office 2010 has an embedded default font "Calibri" which I do not like. I go through the motions of changing the default using the "Options" section in all Programs, i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, etc. Most of the time whatever font I set as default in each program it changes back to Calibri after exiting. I changed the normal.dot file to reflect my new font. I even deleted Calibri from the Fonts directory in Windows 7 but it still shows as the default font. How can that be? It was DELETED !!! Is there a way to change the default font once and for all?

I would have imagined that Microsoft divisions, like Office, would operate with the user's actions in the Control Panel. Apparently not.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEarlier this morning I was on my laptop, and I must have knocked it or something, because the battery fell out and as a result it shut down. A minor annoyance I thought, but nothing extreme.
I then tried to start the computer up again and it told me "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause"
This had come up before and I always just pressed "Start windows normally" and it works fine. However, this time when I tried it, it didn't work fine. The windows logo didn't come up on the "Starting Windows" screen, and it came up with the "Windows is loading files..." bar that typically comes up on startup repair.
I figured hey, I'll let it do it's thing. It came up with the grey background (The one that it typically loads startup repair on) but it just stayed like that. No box coming up telling me the progress. Nothing, just a screen. The mouse cursor is there and I can move it, but nothing happens.
I thought it might just be slow, went out for a cigarette, came back and nothing had changed. I shut the laptop down and tried to run start up repair. The same thing happened. I shut it down again, pressed ESC and tried to run system recovery. Same thing happened. I tried to run safe mode and the same thing happened again. I tried to run the last known good configuarion and - you guessed it - same thing again.
I have a HP Pavilion g6 with Windows 7 and that's all I know about it. I don't have the windows 7 discs since I left them when I came to uni - it's under warranty but I also left the recipt so I can't take it back either ha.
When I go to the device and printer window there is nothing listed. There are printers and devices on the computer because everything works with the exception of the Bluetooth. The printer prints, but I have no way of knowing what is in the queue. This may have never worked since the beginning. I don't know if this is related, but, Internet Explorer does not work. I have downloaded it at least 4 times with the same results. It will not open.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with a Realtek HD Audio sound card. Whenever I use several headphones in the front jack, they all work perfectly fine. However, whenever I have my speakers (I tried using 2 different pairs of speakers to make sure it wasn't just one pair being affected) SECURELY inserted into the back green port of my computer, there is sound only coming from the left speaker while the right speaker is playing absolutely no sound. This happened to both pairs of speakers that I own.
I have tried the following and none worked:
- Update drivers
- Disable speaker and then enable
- Switching from back jack to front jack (vice versa)
- Balancing so that both L and R sounds are at an equal level
None of these common solutions that I found on this site have worked.
I noticed an interesting attack on my fully patched windows 7 home premium system at the standard user level: I don't know exactly how this was done, but I do have some traces (Keep in mind that I had disabled UPnP services beforehand):
1. Auto proxy checker had executed.
2. Teredo Tunneling and about 15 ISATAP tunneling adapters were created.
3. Malware successfully bypassed my two-way firewall and transmitted to the outside.
It looks like malware is able to successfully use ipv6 Teredo Tunneling and ISATAP tunneling to confuse my two-way firewall and use tunneling loops to send traffic outside. I had UPnP blocked, but they used tunneling tricks to bypass the firewall rules.Because the use of tunneling loops bypassed my firewall rules I would like to permanently disable the actual services for VPN and tunneling on my Windows 7 machine. What services need to be disabled to make my Windows 7 machine absolutely VPN and tunnel proof?
I am not able to install microsoft office version 2010 on my windows 7 ultimate x32 bit. It gives an error "that u don't have sufficient permissions to install text on your computer" or something like this.....

These were lost during the upgrade but are on my laptop, which still runs Office 2003, as .dot type files and I also have them copied to a memory stick. However, I am at a loss as to how and where to save them into the new programme on my desktop PC. If it makes a difference, I should add that I do not use Libraries and have disabled them.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI realize that this is not primarily a Windows7 problem, but it just bothered me to see one program stopping me from setting the file associations for another program. And I need to vent.I have been running both Libre Office (LO) and Open Office (OO) for months now, not a heavy user, just trying to keep both going while I figure which one I liked best. These apps share file extensions, and are very file compatible, and I had always been able to open the same document in either.Both families of programs pinned to the Start Menu had, for months, contained file history of many documents, some documents showing as history in both app-families, and able to be opened in either LO or OO. Yesterday, I upgraded Open Office. First thing I noticed, the LO apps pinned to the start menu had their document history icons changed to OO icons. Sure enough, these documents, in the history list of a pinned LO app, open in OO. Rats, I think--I guess I will have to re-assign the extensions to LO. No can do! I have never had this happen before, but I now when I use "Open With" on a file with the shared extensions, (.ods, .odt,...) then "Choose Default Programs...", then "browse" to set a new default, the LO app does not stick. So far, I am unable to set the file association to any of the LO apps.
I have occasionally seen software, usually pretty sleazy and undesirable software, that would hijack file associations, would take-over as much of the computer as possible. But at worst, they just made it inconvenient so that the user would have to go back and re-assign the desired apps. But I did not expect to see a professionally done app like Open Office to do this sort of thing without asking. And for sure, I did not expect to have an application block my ability to re-assign file extensions to to another app.
When I try to enter product key it states that it is an out of date version. Can Office 2007 still be loaded some way?

I want to take a bunch of fonts with me, but Explorer in Windows 7 won't let me actually look at what files are in the font directory; all I can see is their characteristics, provided by Control Panel. Will it work to just copy font files into that directory from the XP machine? Or is there some additional voodoo to get them installed?

Except I still have 3d fonts under the icons on the desktop and they look terrible on a solid background. I am from Sri Lanka, and hence I use Sinhala and Tamil fonts from time to time. I have discovered that certain fonts appear fully on the Fonts Panel in the CP. However, other do not (that is, those others appear faded on the CP Fonts panel). WHen I change my font type to a Sinhala font that appeared fully on the panel, it types well on MS Word. But when I try to type in a Sinhala font that appear faded in the CP Fonts Panel, it types in English. how this can be, and what steps I can use to remedy it? to prevent it?

View 0 Replies View RelatedEverything is fine now. If I did something, not sure what worked exactly, but I won't argue Got a strange issue. I've been doing some fiddling recently with customizing Windows 7 (specifically, installing Rainmeter and trying to install custom themes). When I tried to install a theme, however, I ended up with font troubles. Apparently it wrote over some of the main fonts and, oddly enough, made the font show up transparent in some places. (a specific example is in a folder I created on the desktop) Is there a way to restore the fonts completely to default? I've tried restoring to defaults in font settings, but no-go. What do you guys think? I'm thinking I should give up custom themes for a bit until I can make a restore point (I like to dive into things like this. Keeps it challenging, you know ) EDIT: Forgot to mention that this is all on the 64 bit version!
