Sep 23, 2012All my desktop icons are missing, no start button or task bar.The only way I can access my computer is via safe mode.Two things happened this morning so I am not sure which one is the culprit. Firstly I had an update from Java.Then I shut my computer down and went to bed.During the night, my UPS board starting beeping. We were having power problems, I think a brown out.The power went out completely then all my other electronics like my tv, kettle, washing machine etc, starting working properly again.So I can't say whether it was the power problem that has caused this or the Java update. I have done a system restore which didn't help. I have done Windows+R and typed in 'explorer.exe"..which only gave me a black screen. I have run all antivirus programs and nothing is being picked up.

Jul 15, 2012I have a HP Touchsmart 300-1060a (Home Premium Windows 7 64 BIT) which I bought few years back. Now for the last 6 months or so I started getting issues with my machine was not displaying anything at all after turning it on. So I had to hard reset my power from the machine and then was able to see it started displaying again.At first I suspected graphic card (NVIDIA GEFORCE) but then I did my diagnostic test and nothing was found.One day, I started re-imaging my machine as a fresh and then after this it never came back ONLINE. I read all HP forums & even HP Online support was unable to help me to find the cause.Because when I turn on my machine I can see the power light was on and could hear big fan noise but mo HDD activity at all.So at this stage, I suspected either motherboard or BIOS but wasn't 100% sure what could be the real cause because I was sure it was not due to graphic card.So first I re-setted by my BIOS to see if it helps but it didn't came up at all. So then I took my machine to a Computer repair shop (a friend of mine) and we detected it could be due to the regulator which supplies power to the CPU and motherboard.So we replaced that part and now my HP Touchsmart is running fin since then.But I have lost my HP Startup logo with options such as below: [code]

Jan 3, 2013So about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened.

Jan 16, 2013I have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now.I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.

When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK.

Aug 13, 2012Yesterday, the task bar and Start button mysteriously disappeared.I've also found that the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" windowdoesn't come up. There are two places to click on in Control Panelthat should bring up this window, but it doesn't. The Control Panelborder changes color as if something is starting to happen, but thennothing happens, possibly indicating that some program starts to runbut then finds something wrong and exits. I didn't see anythinginteresting in the error logs. The desktop icons appear normally.The problem exists only when logging onto my son's account. When Ilog on as administrator, the task bar and Start button appearnormally.The usual tricks don't work: Ctrl+ESC, or bringing up Task Manager andtrying to rerun explorer.exe. I tried sfc to check for corruptedfiles, but none turned up. I ran an AVG scan and it did find one fileit considered a threat, which it removed, but that didn't solve theproblem.
I found a web site that referred to the registrykeyHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorerwhich has a NoSetTaskbar value that can be used to disable the"Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window. But when I log ontomy son's account, the Policies key had no subkeys at all. I triedadding an Explorer subkey without adding any values, but this didn'tsolve the problem. Last week I was trying to backup some files to External HD, because of some editing that is due in three days from now. I have spent that week using Tune Up Utilities, System Mechanic, Hdd regenerator, CheckDisc Gui, Advanced System Care, checkdisk, WinDlg, Perfect Disc, PDtt (or something like that) and many other trying to fix some error that was reported by windows whenever I connected the drive to Pc.
Finally I decided to go with that same windows utility that was reporting errors and everything went fine.
But today I was trying to defrag index files on fixed internal partition with Perfect Disc that is done during boot, and Chkdsk appeared and before I could stop it started fixing something and erased 200gb of material or stored it somewhere where I can't find it. I can't find reports, log or anything.No indications of it in any of the utilities. I revealed hidden files/folders, went through Total Commander view, even Nero, and nothing, no trace of chk files. But I can see used space:

It created a Hilda PC user and I also have a Hilda user so I transferred all of my files from Hilda PC to Hilda and deleted the Hilda PC folder. I went to open a .doc file I use frequently and was not able to find it. I had just used it an hour earlier so I know I have it on the PC but now I can't find it. I even ran a retrieve deleted files software in case I had inadvertently deleted it and it didn't show up. Jun 7, 2012I'm having a little problem with my SSD. It's a Corsair Force 3 120GB. With the starting loss of 9GB it's a 111GB SSD. When I click computer from the start menu to view the available disk space it says 44GB. This dropped from 58GB to 44GB today without me installing/changing anything. Also, if I go into the SSD, and make sure view all hidden files and folders is on, if I add up all the space used it is 58GB, 111-58=53 so surely I should have 53GB left?

Dec 12, 2009Windows 7 Display was on Power Save at the time of install and everything seemed to be working as planned.
After several weeks with using Windows 7, with the Monitor in Power Save, I tried to activated it, the screen went black and it looked like the monitor died. Restarted the computer and monitor did not return to life.
Finally, concluded that it was DOA, and turn the machine off and went to buy a new one since this dead monitor was a LCD and was 5 years old. But wait.......from the monitor was a green flashing light and if I did whatever giggling with the cords and unplugged and replugged, the monitor came to life again but soon after it again died.
Was about to install the new monitor when the old one again came to life. This time, I took it off Power Save and set the screen saver to black after 10 minutes. It's now a full day later without any issue and the old monitor looks great again.
Are there issues with the Power Saver feature and not with my monitor?
Is my LCD on the last leg of life and these just die without warning?
I am ready to return the new monitor but can anyone advise weather this is a Power Saver issue or is my monitor in the process of checking out and going black for good?

I seem to have resolved that issue, but now ALL of my miscrosoft documents, pictures, etc. that were in files are gone. The file folders apeear as usual, but they are now completely empty. Jan 10, 2012So I have a massive Flac library. And I have WMP tag plus plugin installed. All my music files are on their own seperate hard drive (F:). Originally i had just put the seperate folders for each artist directly on the root of F.
(F:artist folder)
This worked for a while and then somewhere down the line I had to make another folder on the root of F: and then replace all artist folders inside that. (to clean up some sharing issues I believe)
(F:Musicartist folder).
This also worked fine for tags. for a while. I had shared the root drive originally, and also shared the F:Music folder as well. after i had created the F:Music folder and shared that, I unshared the actual drive. Now, this was STILL fine for a couple of days. I had a fully shared library with songs correctly tagged with album art. But today I turned on WMP and went to wirelessly play music over my home network to my xbox. (using the xbox menus to access the music on my computer.)
While music was playing through my xbox I sat at the computer to look at my library only to see if I could "play to" the xbox from my computers WMP. As it turns out I couldn't but I also couldn't "play to" my laptop... which has always been possible because I do it all the time. (it was on and available.) Just I noticed this, my artist library on my computer started to collapse into an "unknown artist" folder.
I literally watched this happen. all my album art just fell off the screen and now not one song has any tags. everything is under "unknown artist" - "unknown album". I've been fiddling with my computer for an hour now i cant see the problem. I have noticed that the .flac files on my computer now have a different icon representing them... and I don't know why that is either. Why no more tags? Its literally a never ending battle to be able to play my music with WMP, but its almost a must to be able to play everything wirelessly throughout my house. I don't understand why microsoft cant get this to work.

He says he was originally able to get to his email (presumably through a selection on his browser) but something changed and he can no longer find a way to access his email.The friend has little or no technical knowledge, so most of my questions resulted in an "I dunno" response.
I plan to visit him tonight for a look-see. I am not up to date with Win 7 features. Is OE still used for mail in Win 7? I use Thunderbird myself, and found it works well in Win 7. Do not know what mail prog. is now a MS standard with Win 7.I will try get more info and to dope things out on my visit. If we know his provider and email ID do you think we can get to his existing account and set up things so he can once again get is Email?
