View 2 Replies looking to buy a decent laptop with a modest budget of 300-400 usd which i will be using mainly for: 1. browsing (Internet, facebook, mail...) 2. video/audio chatting 3. media storage (music, docs, pictures etc) 4. ms apps 5. casual games 6. memory and any other upgrade
following specs: 1. brand (priority is durability) 2. processor 3. ram 4. memory 5. os 6. 32 bit/64 bit 7.
just a quick thread about my current laptops cooling problems because it constantly rises to 90C Degrees, when doing the simplest of tasks such as web browsing. I have a cooling stand for it, and it hardly ever is moved because I know how hot it gets - its more like a desktop now. I've heard it is because of a bad heat sink design in the DV6 Series, but was wondering whether replacing the current thermal compound with something such as Arctic Silver would help at all? I am buying a new laptop in the next few months, but I cannot decide on the best laptop to buy. I have been interested in a Dell XPS 15, which has the i3-2310m processor and the Nvidia 525M GPU. I don't playing any FPS games, but do play some browser games (or did play, but I would rather have the option there). Would this be adequate for games like RuneScape and such?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a crucial 256gb realssd C300 for my 2month old Lenovo x201(Win 7P 64bit, i7 640m, 8gb RAM). What is the best way to install the new SSD. I have read that a simple cloning may not be the best approach for optimal performance. Should I do a clean install by using the boot disk I made when I first got the x201 along with the recovery media disks, then reinstall all programs?

View 1 Replies View Relatedthe newer smart phones have nice powerful processors in them so I was wondering if the DAC (Digital / Analog converters) in these are as good as the ones in a typical LAPTOP computer set up -- bog standard on board sound from a laptop computer -- not high end specialized studio stuff etc.My Galaxy III S phone can play FLAC files and plugging the output into a DECENT set of speakers appears to me to be just as good if not better than the same sound played from the computer - a relatively decent laptop computer (Sony VAIO VPCEH with Intel I5 processor). I tested this by connecting the phone DIRECTLY to the pre-amp with the music on the phone's micro sdhc card. Had I done it via the USB then that might have needed another DAC conversion so the test cases wouldn't have been the same.I use a phone app WINAMP PRO (just like the PC version) so I can use Folders / directories to play the music and it can play FLAC too -- a lot of music phone apps lack this facility which is a shame. I like also the "play by folders" too -- as I have a lot of Audio books -- saves endless tagging and creating playlists / albums. --Just point winamp to the directory / or file and play it.I find also streaming music from the phone to the receiver device seems to work better than messing around with pc software too -- especially on a laptop.Another app here -- OrangeSqueeze in conjunction with SQUEEZEPLAYER -does the job of the logitech squeeze server on the laptop. The phone will stream music from a Network (or any acessible drive) to the player device(s) -- no prob but use the Wifi on the phone --not the DATA content from the phone company !! otherwise your Bank balance will diminish faster than Spain's Economy.
I used to be very sceptical of smartphones --even have some posts on the forum saying I'd never buy them -- however I have to eat my own words -- the latest crop with the latest Android version are incredibly useful now and possibilities seem quite exciting with what you can do with them.Seems to me that we don't need to do much Multi-media streaming from Windows 7 in the future as your phone will handle it. Perhaps Ms is getting this right by gradually withdrawing a lot of multimedia in the standard version of W8.
Should I get a preinstalled system with Vista and upgrade it or get a preinstalled system with windows 7. Forgive my ignorance On pre-installed system will it be 64 bit or 32 bit systems or both?
I would like to install the operating system myself. I like systems with quit fans. I would like cdrw and dvd player (Combo is fine). I will need a pci or USB modem. (I am still on dial-up)
Will an old crt monitor work (VGA input)?
Wanted to upgrade my windows7 experience, have 4GB memory installed, have 250GB Free space on harddisk, weak spot is my graphic-card i guess(intel(r)G41Express-Chipset.Could some one advice me a better card?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of upgrading my graphics card(s) sometime after Christmas (as one of my GX2's is slowly dying now i'm stuck with 1 98GX2) and am deciding on a few options I would like some opinions on.
a) 2 Nvidia GTX275's (AKA GTX295) $600 for the 2
b) 1 GXT295 $750 (takes me back to the GX2 day's)
c) Or I swing the other way and go for an ATI card, but I cannot take advantage of Crossfire technology as i'm running a Nvidia chipset. so it would have to be a high end card to make it worth it IMO, probably the 5850 $400 as the 5870 is almost $600.
I'm pretty rapped up on a pair of GXT275's, if I do run 2 of them, I will virtually have a GTX295 BUT with OpenGL 3.0 opposed to older OpenGL 2.1 on the GTX295.
I recently upgraded to win 7 on a Nforce 2 board and have had a load of prob's (as posted on here) its seems that my old NF2 board can't run Win 7 so I have now treated my self to a new pc (comming for xmas) spec as here;
WIN 7 32 or 64 bit?
Asus M4A78-VM - DDR2 1200x2 780G chipset
AM3 Phenom X2 250 3.0 GHz,
4Gb Corsair Memory DDR2 1066 (2x2Gb)
500GB SATA Hard Drive
Cool Master 500W PSU
Can anyone please recomend a graphics card (pci-e 2) for under £100 that would suit this set up (either ATI or Nvidia) its main use is for internet with the odd games play but its not really intended as a gamming pc.
Also should I install 32 bit or 64 bit Win 7 ?

I currently use an ATI X800 Pro. Although its lasted this long, ive had weird issue and bugs out of it and I would sort of prefer to go back to Nvidia. But i've heard that the only cards working with Direct X 11 are ATI for right now?
I haven't kept up with hardware for some time so i don't even know who's "winning" right now with the best cards out.
I was looking at this card.
Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1155-TR GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
It looks alright and I think it will meet my needs. I plan to game with it moderately, but i dont need the absolute best. Just needs to run current games and be enjoyable, without struggling to do so.
Any suggestions that fall in a similar price point as the link posted?
I know about EFS, but I am doing 3 laptops, one runs Windows 7 Home Premium and the other 2 run Vista Home Premium, none of them have EFS.
So what I am looking to do, is find a program that will let me encrypt a users home directory but not something where it has to be manually encrypted/decrypted, looking for something similar to what EFS does where it will encrypt/decrypt on the fly.
I will soon be completing a Ceton quad-tuner card/WMC/W7U64/xBox360S setup to record and watch programs from my PC. I will be starting a job soon that requires my being on the road 5 days a week and I want to know if there is a way that I can watch my programming from the road from my laptop. I've not used Media Center before...does my PC have to be on for recording and playback as described above or does it "awaken" by itself?

It happens on occasions, ill put on a song and it will stutter and lag my computer, or my msn sound will go off and it will freeze for a second. I downloaded the latest drivers and still it freezes, I checked if I have too much stuff running and it is not that. I don't know if anyone has a solution for that. I have a Gateway NV44.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a HP-DV6-6050 laptop, bought it last august. It was running fine up until a month or two ago. I don't recall what I did but I think it was the time I installed Dragon Age: Origins. Either way, I noticed some problems since then. Firstly it became very slow...even deleting files took longer than usual even of size 18 bytes.Programs and folder would take time to launch.
Secondly, which is a big headache, audio and video files now get stuck every 3-5 seconds while playing them. It is there evn in VLC player. I tried defragging, some kind of a memory test through diagnostic startup, and even returned the system to factory settings. Sometimes it seems to get better.. but only for a while. Also, the graphic card switching mechanism seems to be a bit buggy. When I plug in the power source, the dialog box to switch the graphic card doesn't appear.

I bought a new Dell XPS laptop about 2 months ago (I have filled out the system specs info on my profile here). I bought the laptop predominantly to use for making music, and also bought an external soundcard - Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6, which is a USB 2 device. The laptop has two USB 3 sockets and a USB/SATA socket as well. I had great difficulty getting the Komplete Audio 6 to work with the laptop, as I was unable to load the drivers using the USB 3 sockets (wouldn't recognise USB 2 for some reason). I eventually got it working by using the USB/SATA socket instead, which it is currently plugged into via a USB hub (along with my optical mouse). I was advised by other Komplete Audio 6 users to use a USB hub to avoid damaging the laptop. I also have a Yamaha midi keyboard plugged into one of the USB 2 sockets.
My problem is that I am getting regular Blue Screens, sometimes after a period of inactivity, though I cannot say 100% what triggers them. I am running Microsoft Security Essentials, and Spyware Blaster as antivirus programs. I've read the instructions on submitting BSOD files, and have attached mine here.
I have been using for a while a Toshiba Satellite c650 laptop. It has been used only to listen to music and to check e-mail via Internet Explorer. Recently, after a short camping trip where rain was abundant, the screen stopped functioning. The computer was working, we could hear the music playing. After shutting it down, turning it back on would make the screen work for anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. The screen then remained pitch black, whatever we did. I finally had the idea to plug in my 27-inch external monitor. The results weren't as good as I expected. The external screen works fine, but the resolution cannot be set higher than 1366x768, instead of the usual 1600x900 on the laptop. Also, when connected to my Alienware laptop, the external monitor can go up to 1980x1080.As if this wasn't enough, when playing music, the speakers would suddenly let out a very loud buzzing noise for a few seconds. We have tried to pinpoint the cause, but it happens whenever it seems to want to.
Is there anything we can do about the screen? (without sending it to be repaired, of course) I guess there's a problem in the hardware, because the external screen works. There might also be a problem with the video card, because of the weird maximal resolution..
Everytime I use my laptop when the router is turned on,I constantly get background advertisements in audio only, they can be advertising anything from a product to SKY news or BBC news.I have to put my volume in mute all the time. This happens even when I have not got a Google web page open and even when I am playing a game,I have this happening. What is causing it and what can I do to stop it?
