Is it possible to create a large partition of space on HD and use an iso image on the main OS side mount it and install a clean copy on clean space and then delete the main OS? View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook. It came with Windows 7 starter I have a seperate copy of Windows 7 home premium (on dvd) that i purchased. There's no dvd/cd drive on netbook and I will not be purchasing one for it. (defeats the portability of netbook!). So, is there anyway (and if so how) to install or create a boot usb_key or external hard drive from the Windows 7 home premium dvd so that I can then install win7home premium onto the netbook from the usb_key and/or external hard drive?

Today when I power up I get a message something like No Boot Drive. After several tries and getting the same message I reseat the connectors to the drive. Same error.I remove the HD from the old system and connect it to the same cables as the SSD was connected to.System boots ok.I remove the old HD.Install a new HD, same cables thinking I'm going to install Win 7.Boot with the Win 7 CD.Can not find the new HD just two others that are attached for data and backup. Now put both the old and new HD on the new system and boot with the old HD. Fiddle with Disk Management, it recognizes the New HD. Set up a partition on it, showing as Primary.Back to the Win 7 CD, select the New HD partition but get the following error message Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing syetem partition. See the Setup log files for more information.Have no clue about how to see the log info since I'm running Win install.I've been back and forth between the Old HD fiddling with Disk Management on the New HD then back to the Win install. I wouldn't even want to guess how many times I've been through this, also reading MS notes on installing new HDs on Windows.
I have an extra TB of disk space that is unused and would like to install Windows 7 on my computer without deleting the XP system I use. I want to do this as a test of how many programs will I have to re-install and do drivers exist for printers etc. Two questions: 1) how do I establish the new partition that I will need and 2) How will I boot the computer to either operating system?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently built myself a new system from scratch, and plan to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit onto it using an OEM copy I purchased from retail. I had planned to save money on my new machine by not installing an optical drive, since I have no need for one. My original intent was to take the optical drive out of my old machine and use it just to install Windows, but in short-sightedness didn't realize my old optical drive is not compatible with my new motherboard. After a bit of research, I have found a number of websites detailing methods of installing Windows 7 using a USB Flashdrive. I have an 8GB Flashdrive so I had hoped to work-around my problem through this method, but ran into a new problem. All of the guides require that the data be copied from the disk to the flashdrive using Windows 7/Vista, and on my old machine I am using Windows XP (which from my limited understanding, doesn't play friendly with USB drives). I found a couple of other articles detailing a more complicated method that works with XP, BUT doesn't work for me, because my copy of XP is 32-bit and the copy of Windows 7 I want to use is 64-bit.
I don't know anyone with a copy of Vista/7 64-bit already to use or with a compatible optical drive to borrow, and I really hope to avoid buying an optical drive just to install Windows.
Does anyone know of a method that I can get the information I need to install Windows 7 64-bit onto a USB Flashdrive using Windows XP 32-bit? Or any other way to get my DVD of Windows 7 installed onto my DVD drive-less computer?
i know i know... there's tons of threads about making flash drive bootable, put windows 7 onto flash drive and even has a post said ... installing windows 7 onto drive ... but no answer...i have bootable windows cd a laptop with bootable usb port capability... i am NOT trying to make a bootable windows 7 flash drive...i am trying to install windows 7 onto this removeable drive so if my hdd really dies, i can just use this flash drive as a hdd to continue do what i am doing light weight computer tasks

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to install Windows(XP/Vista/7/embedded) onto a USB flash drive, such that it is bootable from any PC (assuming it supports USB boot and meets the minimum OS requirements)? The installation should ideally provide basic services necessary to perform mundane activities such as web surfing and word processing. I've seen guides for installing Windows onto USB flash drives and HDDs, but not one that claims to be portable. Is this at all possible?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm not able to burn the image to a DVD because, well, I don't have a DVD burner. I figured I'd mount it to a virtual drive and install it to another partition that way, but it's been so long since I've used virtual drive software I'm not sure how I'd do it. Once I mount the image to a virtual drive (I will be using VirtualCloneDrive5), what do I do next? Secondly, my computer is an HP and all the recovery data (drivers) is on its own partition on the harddrive already. This means I can't access the drivers, though I can just download them off HP's site. My question is, though, will at any point during the Windows 7 installation will I be prompted to install any drivers? I don't want to be installing and then have it ask for drivers that I haven't burned to a disc yet.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just got a new Solid state drive and i wanted to do a fresh install of Windows 7 but have been wondering the best way to go about it. Do i do one of the following after backing up all needed data.
1) just unplug all the other harddrives and plug in the new SSD drive and boot up the CD from there. Then at after the install just plug back the old hard drives (even with the windows 7 install) and then reformat them from windows.
2) Run the computer with the Windows 7 Disc and select the solid state drive and ask for a fresh install. Im not too sure that this is a viable option.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThe drive on my laptop when down so I got a new one and since I have 7 on a disk thought I would put it on the new drive. So I plugged in my drive when to bios set the boot order to go from the CD/DVD rom first and a screen came up that said bootmgr missing hit ctr-alt-del. So I tried using the recovery disks that came with the computer and the same think, it won't boot from the rom drive. So I put the drive in my PC and it showed up fine and worked perfectly. So I was wondering can I plug the laptop drive into my PC and install windows 7 on it while it is plugged into my pc without messing up the windows that is installed on my PC? When I put the 7 disk in my PC it shows up just fine like it should so I was wondering if this is possible or if it would hurt anything on my PC?

So, I decided to use the hard drive and DVD-R/W drive in a new build:It does come with an OEM Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition install on it, however, I have read that to upgrade the motherboard on it will not work due to the OS being Tied to the motherboard installed in it!

Currently I am using 1 500GB SATA on a Win7 64 Pro system.
I am attempting to install/add a SSD. The BIOS does see the drive. But after the BIOS gets done with its check, Windows never loads.
Attempting to use F8 or F5 does not seem to do anything. Disconnected the SSD, and reboot, and Windows boots fine. How do I get Windows to load while having the SSD connected?
I'm building a new pc and I'm trying to save as much money as I can. So I'm wondering can I skip buying an optical drive to install my Windows 7 and just use a USB Flash Drive to install windows 7 on a NEW COMPUTER with nothing on it(no OS).

View 1 Replies View RelatedAlright, I did a backup image in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit from a 500GB drive. I then took that out and put in a new Barracuda 3TB sata3 drive. After it was done restoring the image I extended the volume and of course it only gave me 2TB of space. So after reading a bit I needed to use Seagates disc wizard to format it to accept and show 3TB (2.79 useable) space which I did by hooking it up as an extra drive in another computer. Now my question is when I do hook it up in the new computer and put the image on again the process wants to automatically format the drive and in doing so I am afraid I will end up with the same 2TB's of space after extending the volume again.
