I downloaded some 'music' files and then saw they were 'nasty' stuff and wanted to delete them. I followed Microsoft's instructions and used Shift-Del and got a message asking if I want to permanently delete them so I replied Yes.

The sole answer gave a suggestion to "switch the feature off". This answer though useful to some is not to me. Those programs which are indeed often used are on the desktop via a shortcut. Those on the start menu, are programs not often used or perhaps only used this week, then not used for 2 months, then used again later once. Therefore, as the reader suggested, to then, after turning the feature off and"add links to the programs you do want there manually" doesn't do it since I may not want them there 'next week' nor do I like the idea of me having to manually add them and manually remove them all the time. In Windows XP there used to be a little Microsoft program called TweakUI (Power Toys) that would do exactly that--controlled which programs could go there and which could not. Considering that TweakUi was originally made for the 1st or 2nd Windows version (before Windows 95) I hesitate to use it again for Windows 7.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got a nasty virus a few days ago and my MSE and Malwarebytes kept taking care of it but it kept coming back.Finally my computer crashed and upon reboot, EVERYTHING was gone. By gone my computer would still boot but it was loading a default desktop with ALL my icons gone and when I would try to access my C: drive, it showed that it was completely empty. Looking in "My Computer" the space was still used though.Next looking at my D: and E: drives (2TB and 3TB WDC's) I found the same issue. My Computer showed the amount of space I expected to see take and free was correct but when I would access them, they were empty like freshly formatted drives.I fired up a command window and did the following: attrib -h -r -s /s /d X:*.* X being the drive letter in question at the time. This seems to have restored MOST of my folders on my D: and E: drives. However something were still locked out with the following style errors..Also, some of the folders that were unhidden STILL show as "access denied" when I try to enter/access them. I can get into them as I'm an "admin" on this system.How do I just reset all my permissions so it's like it should be if the drive was FRESH.

My university has an application that students must run it to do test (midterm, final,...). It really annoy to all students. It will close all file it can close on computer. (system file too...). So, users must turn account control to default level so... this app cannot auto close it.I don't know this before. My account control is lowest level. So, when run this app, it will automatically restart. (because some system file has been closed). After twice times, I login at meet that error : No matter how I login, Windows appear Welcome, and logoff permantly after.When I create another account and set account control to default level, I can run this app and can logon.But I still want to use old account.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi've installed Windows 7 severeral times now.whenever I use the advised install procedure for having the /users store on a secnd disk .....(during Windows 7 install)the profiles get corrupted and I get thrown back to temporary profiles.I detect no other install problem.These systems are multi user systems, so the user space isgetting rather big (unacceptable to be on the system disk)the procedure is straight forward and I can not find any error in the profileList....Clearly I have the SID.BAK profiles every time in the registry ...But however I repair I always get the error back This problem makes windows 7 as a whole unusable (CRAPPY PROFILES)Is there a way to really get rid of this problem .....ps: I run my secondary �SERS disk on: (BRAND NEW INSTALL)-the same physical disk ....... disk latency can not cause the problem -On a different physical disk (other setup/but fails as well)-32 bit 64 bit same problem

1. Click Start>All Programs>Windows Update
2. Click Change Settings>Use Pulldown to set to "Never Update this Computer (Not Recommended)"
3. Click OK
All is good for about a week, Then some entity turns back on updates to "Download and Install Updates Automatically" and User Account Control is turned on to Full Protection.
I did not make these changes on my own. I have tried using the Group Policy Editor, nogo
I am signed up with the MSDN-AA program and have downloaded windows 7 professional, now I want to put it on my main PC which has the home premium.. Obviously you all know that the anytime upgrade doesn't work with these keys nor can you upgrade using the iso provided. My question is, Is there any way to get around doing a clean install? Any way to upgrade and keep all my files and settings and things without formatting the whole drive?

My mouse wouldn't even move on the screen, completely frozen.Manually shut down. Then it would sometimes freeze at the "Asus" screen and sometimes the computer would turn on but there wouldn't be any output to the monitor. I managed to boot and enter in Safe Mode. That didn't freeze. So I tried reinstalling Windows 7, selected Custom Installation, etc. Unpacked the files alright, went about 17% through the second step but had to restart to continue.Shortly after restarting, at about 36%, it froze again. Tried it again, froze in nearly the same spot, 37%. Started again and it tried to recover my old installation, gave me the blue screen of death "Windows stopped to prevent damage.Now I'm back in the cycle where it either starts with no video output or starts and freezes in Windows.

0xffffffff will disable ipv6, but listening port still bind to ipv6.
for example, i still can ping ::1 even though that above registry editing should "disable the ipv6". and when i do netstat -an | find "LISTEN", some ports still bind to ipv6, for example:
TCP [::]:80 [::]:0 LISTENING
TCP [::]:135 [::]:0 LISTENING
TCP [::]:443 [::]:0 LISTENING
TCP [::]:445 [::]:0 LISTENING
and so on. anyone have solution to permanently disabling ipv6? the reason why i want to rid of ipv6 listening is because it cause conflicting to my router when want to do port forwarding. i don't have any problem to port forward to other machine installing windows xp/2003. tq.
I am still battling to get my External Drive recognised by Windows.After doing a full format, the correct 500gb is at last shown in Disk management.However my problem is that when I restart my computer I get a message saying, to use this drive you will have to format it !If I now disconnect the drive and reconnect it, it is recognised again .Can anyone explain how I get Windows to maintain it`s recognition of this drive permanently.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I open anything from microsoft office 2003, that can be outlook, that can be a word document, that can be a powerpoint presentation or an excel sheet, my windows 7 taskbar and the computer in general slow down considerably, but expecially the taskbar lags for at least 3 seconds whatever I do (like moving the pointer over several icons so that the aero-thingy shows up takes 5 seconds to pop up the little windows or opening a new explorer window). So when did it all start? At first everything was fine, office 2003 was running fine with w7x64, then I installed the cisco system vpn client (64bit of course) because i need it for university. After that the problem occured and I haven't been able to make it go away since then.
1. I uninstalled the vpn client -> no changes
2. I uninstalled office 2003 and reinstalled -> no changes
3. Office is updated with the latest patch -> no changes
4. I tried to turn of aero (who knows?) -> no changes

I am trying to delete anything regarding my recent medical history from my desktop so I can give it to someone without having to do a fresh install. I do a universal search from Windows Start and looking for the name of my doctor "Smith". I deleted all documents, but the search results are still showing up-when I click to open folder to delete it the folder is no longer in existence. I am not sure what else to do in order to permanently erase any semblance of these files from that function.

The new computer is for my sole personal use.Because I dont need a nanny operating system I have turned UAC off. Being an adult I'll take full responsibility if I break something.Is there some way I can also turn off all this ACL stuff. I don't need it - its my computer, its my data, and I am the only person who uses the computer.If that means a reinstall then I can do that - I bought a Win 7 Pro 64bit licence. The only reasons I got 7 were symbolic links and libraries, but I'm wasting so much time jumping over needless security hurdles that I've yet to even look into them.I know all this stuff is relevant in a corporate environment - but this is my personal computer, its probably the last one I'll have - I dont need the hassle.

The desktop background is different (I think it reverted to blue-white bird puffs HP one), the icons are very small, Microsoft Word 2000 was gone, Google Chrome disappeared from lower tray! In addition, history disappeared from Firefox! (that is what I have noticed - so far). What is going on??I thought maybe that was some update but the most recent update was yesterday and was about MSecurity Essentials.I googled the problem and after I typed winword.exe- I found Microsoft Word, it sort of- reinstalled itself and now it looks a bit different.I went to Program FIles 86 to reinstall Microsoft Word shortcut on desktop, and it is there, however, it doesn't look like a Microsoft logo-as before, it looks like files .Also, all my documents were gone! So I did more "googling" and was able to find my MW docs this way: Computer-C-users-me-My Documents.However, I cannot access these documents through Microsoft Word any more! I can only find them through the above route.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSome days i will for instance be typing an email in my yahoo email or on a fourm site and typing but nothings showing up until i scroll the page some then it shows up but is ehhh well i guess sticky would be the word and things just act or seem weird, i keep thinking someones hacking me so. What ive done and checked: No Malware i run a registered version of Malware bytes, NIS, CCleaner, tune up utillities and i keep an eye on my network activity as well as sometimes leave my task manager open and watch for any new processes or anything that might be clogging me up. i dont run any toolbars except the NIS one and ive checked everything with hijack this as well and no issues.
