How To Go About Installing An OS Onto A Completely Blank Drive
Nov 29, 2011
I'm going to be installing a new SSD into my laptop fairly soon (replacing the current HDD and putting the HDD in my optical drive). I am also upgrading from 7 Professional to 7 Enterprise, and with this comes many, many questions.First of all, how would I go about installing an OS onto a completely blank drive? I have experience with system partitioning and installing a second OS, but never onto a clean slate. Would I use a SATA-USB cable and install the OS through that, or would I have to burn the ISO onto a CD and install through my optical drive once I installed the SSD? Secondly, would I be able to use a system backup of my Professional system to restore my programs and files to the Enterprise filesystem? Or would I have to install everything from scratch?

I just got a new computer, new hard drive and everything. I attempted to install Windows 7 (full version, NOT an upgrade) by putting the disc in, starting the computer, and booting from the BIOS. The monitor shows a bar that says that the Windows files are loading. Then it displays the little Windows logo. And finally it comes to a blue-ish screen with a bird on it (which I have been told is the sign-on screen) with a cursor. Nothing else. I've tried pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE and running Safe Mode. Nothing works.
I have heard that the solution might have something to do with putting certain drivers onto a flash drive. Is that true? If so, um... explain. If not, explain that too.

I'll be unable to click on anything except for windows already open. I can bring up the alt-tab screen, but then once I let go of that tab button, it'll stay there and I can't alt-tab again or switch the window previews. I try to bring up task manager via control alt delete, and task manage will come up, but it'll be completely blank. The only solution I have found to this is to either restart computer or log off. If I move the mouse to a part of the desktop, it'll have the blue circle instead of the pointer.

I tried to upgrade from Vista (64bit) to Windows 7 and it got up to generating compatibility Report - which was completely blank. The only way to proceed was to hit 'Close' - which then cancelled the installation!
Previous to this, I had also tried to download & run the Upgrade Advisor. When trying to run it, it just did nothing at all - didn't even open up. I disabled my Kaspersky anti-virus and disabled any Windows security. I was trying to avoid doing a clean install - but maybe only option. Any ideas?

Have just moved from XP to 7. Everything is perfect except for one minor detail - the screen saver : I choose, I preview (there it is), I set the minutes, but when the time is up I get a completely black screen - and no saver. I am afraid I am a bit confused about your TSG SysInfo.recommendation - I have right clicked and hit Copy, but where exactly has it gone?

I have Compaq Presario C784TU laptop with windows 7 updated on it. Recently while watching a movie, the audio suddenly started giving problems. I updated my audio driver in the device manager and it installed Conexant High Definition Audio Driver 221. After installing that, my audio completely stopped working. Also, that my headphones are working but only the speakers have stopped working. I have checked all the settings and also I don't think there is any problem with the hardware.

I'm not sure which file to burn? Would it be 7264--Disc image at the full file size?
If I click on that file this pops up:
I'm not sure if I can save it to the dvd like that? I saw on another forum someone mentioned imgburn.com and to make sure you burn it as a [bootable image] or else it won't work/boot.
Do I need this IMGBurn program or can I use what Win 7 popped up? Also Is there a certain speed you have to burn it to?

I tried to start it up one day and it told me that it could not find ootcd. To make a long story short, it couldn't be fixed & I pulled the hard drive out of the computer, hooked it up to another, and reformatted the drive. I cant reinstall from the recovery partition because it was bad too and got wiped. What I want to know is if there is a way to get windows 7 installed back on the HDD? I don't have install disks since my computer didn't come with one. I have a verification key that came with the computer, so can I download windows 7 from somewhere and install it (without having to pay for it)? Can I take Windows 7 from my other computer and somehow install it on the drive?

I was wondering... If I move my video, music, my documents folders etc. from my boot drive (ie C drive) to say a storage drive (D Drive), is the data completely removed from the boot drive or is it still there waiting to be erased next time a new file is written to it?

I have an HP desktop running windows vista that will soon be passed on to me. If I buy an "Upgrade" version of windows 7, is there a way to completely and totally wipe out the hard drive and upgrade, or would I have to buy the more expensive "full install" version of 7?

I would like to completely wipe the hard drive of my Lenovo Thinkpad as the Best Buy geek squad really messed things up. I need to back up all of my data first and was wondering if there was any free options online? I have a 4GB jump drive I can use as well.As for wiping the laptops hard drive, what is the best way? Keep in mind that I want to have it completely restored to factory state. I don't want to do a simple reformat through a Windows 7 install

I have this current set up on my computer: 250Gb HDD ( C drive) - contains windows 7 64 bit OS, steam and other files. 360Gb HDD ( D drive) - Partially deleted and defunct windows vista. Some games and files on.
I recently purchased a 3Tb internal HDD, and wish to create the following setup:
3Tb internal HDD (C Drive) - contains the 250 and 360 GB HDD's cloned onto it. 250 and 360 Gb HDD's - Completely wiped and used for backup and storage.
I would also like the 250 and 360 Gb HDD's to be recognised seperately, AS IF they were seperate drives, while remaining on the same 3Tb HDD.
I can only use free software. I also do not want a RAID setup.

What all is involved in loading Windows 7 on a new, blank drive from an Update disk?'ve got 2 computers to upgrade and am about to build a third one, so I'd like to get the Family Pack, which has retail licenses instead of OEM, but how hard will it be to use that on the new pc build?

After the latest Win 7 updates on three of my computers, the CD drive does not read blank CDs. It gives an error message "Windows cannot read the disk in drive E:"etc, format the disk etc.I was always able to put a blank CD in the drive and see that it was blank or could copy files to drive. Now, it only gives me this message. I tried several different blank CDs. They work fine in my older XP computer.

I managed to fix the cd/dvd drive at first and now it reads cd/dvd with something stored in it. However my problem comes when I try to burn something on blank disk. My computer( dell dimension e521) wont read the blank disk at all.
* I tried the Upper and Lower filter and cleaned the disk lens and saw that all SATA cable are good.

Alright, so after a few days of hardware checking I've determined that the cause of my computer being as messed up as it is is the hard drive.
Seagate's own SeaTools says it failed the drive tests, and I'm gonna have to call them later and get an RMA on it.
Well, how would I go about installing Windows 7 on my replacement hard drive? I've installed and activated it a few times on this same drive, but I think that's because the activation system detects the exact same hardware, therefore it lets me keep activating it.
If I put in a different hard drive, though, won't it see it as a different computer and deny me the chance to activate it? (Same goes with my OEM Student version of Office 2007)
So what would you guys suggest? Can I de-activate it from one computer then activate it on another? or what?

I have installed a few drives in my time. But something I do not understand has happened in drive manager in Win 7.Obviously I have to initialise a new drive before I can format and partition it, but when I go to initialise another box comes up and identifies the new drive and asks to I want to partition it with MFT tables?? Not seen that before I obviously dont want to move any boot partitions from my C drive.I have drive C with hidden boot partition, main active system partition and a data partition (logical). The new drive will be E, is 1TB and I want to partition into 4 logical drives. I know how to do it, query is what is the box that comes up and asks whether I want MFT or another version?? Is it safe to say OK.
