Get Maximum Performance In A Mixed 10/100/1000 Lan?
Dec 18, 2012
I recently bought an Asus RT-N16 wifi router with gigabit lan capability. I bought it for 3 reasons. 1. Gigabit lan capability.2. USB connected storage sharing.3. USB connected 3G/4G internet connectivity when wired lan fails.I have 3 PCs with gigabit Ethernet on board. The fourth one has a 100 mbps Ethernet. Now the question is this. Do all the connected PCs have to have Gigabit Ethernet capabilities to get such speeds or should I get this high speed connectivity between complying PCs?For large file transfers I used to get around 11 to 12 MB transfer rate with a 10/100 ZTE modem /switch / router. This is like saturated 100 mbps connectivity. I am not getting anything close to this with the new router.

I've recently had this problem where some keyboard shortcuts aren't working or are performing incorrect functions. For example, ctrl+alt+del does nothing, while ctrl+c, in Chrome, opens up the Chrome Elements tab. In fact, while typing this, my shift key has suddenly stopped working and actually prevents me from typing anything when it is held. I'm using caps lock to type capitals. Actually, it seems that some letters it works fine for (like "A"), but some letters (like "O"), it opens my Chrome bookmarks...and now shift plus C is opening that damn Chrome Elements. Shift i is doing that too.

Here's our setup: we have a dual-band router, broadcasting two SSIDs (which are effectively the same network). The 2.4GHz band is using 802.11g only, and the 5GHz band is a mixed 802.11A and N.
My laptop is 'AGN' compatible and connected using 802.11N. The Xbox is connected to the same SSID using 802.11A. However, the problem lies with 2 of the other laptops. Both have 'ABG' network cards, and both can connect to the 802.11G 2.4GHz network without issues, but neither of these laptops will connect to the 5GHz network using 802.11A.
If I change the network settings so that the 5GHz band is A-only, the two laptops in question above connect fine. I can't see what's wrong - both cards are set to a/b/g mode, they all support WPA2.
Is there some sort of bug/feature that prevents connecting to a mixed A/N network?
Note: one laptop is Win 7 Pro, the other is Vista HP.

I installed Win7 Pro 64bit on my new build and want the new build to have access my HP 6p over my (wired) LAN. The HP 6p is connected to a machine running 32 bit XP Pro. I want to print with the HP 6p from the Win 7 Pro 64bit machine (which will be dual booted with XP Pro 64bit as soon as that OS arrives in the mail), as well as couple of other XP pro 32bit machines, and one oldster still running 2000Pro, on the network. Based on maroxur's advice url.. I've downloaded the HP Universal print drivers (PCL5, PCL6 & PS, all 64bit). I think I will need to use the PS driver because I want to be able to print from Corel Word Perfect and Adobe Pro 7, but am not sure how to load the 64bit PS driver when I can't get the Win7 Pro machine to "see" the HP 6p printer share in the XP Pro machine it's attached to. Logistically, it would be difficult to attach the HP 6p to the Win7 Pro machine, but if that's the only way (or the best way) I could do it if I can find a good USB adapter for my parallel port.My network is a "hub & spoke", from a router, if that makes any difference.
Additionally, I've been reading about the MS/HP "Printer Isolation" protocols url... and think I should probably set up the Win7 Pro machine as the print server and then use the "Isolation mode" mode for all printers in the network, but am not sure. I added the "Print Management" snap in to the MMC, but am not really sure where to go from there.

I work for a small company. We have a workgroup of 5 pc's. Two of them are winXp and the rest Windows 7. I have bought a switch and put them all in one network. I have set some public folders with read/write permissions. Everything fine so far.I can't setup homegroup, as this is a Windows 7 feature, and could probably solve my problem. What I want to do is to password protect, or limit somehow some folders that will be available/ accessible only by some partners. Any ideas or workarrounds? I have downloaded Kakasoft shared folder protector, but it doesn't seem to work so good. I encrypted a couple of folders and after a couple of attempts now I can't open and/or decrypt/restore them..

I have a dell dimension 9200 and the motherboard can handle a maximum of 4gb of ram, but is there a limit per slot? In other words does it have to be 4 x 1gb sticks of ram or can I use 2 x 2gb sticks? The reason I ask is that I've had lots of bsod and crashes recently and after performing lots of tests using memtest it seems that 2 of the ram slots on my motherboard are bad meaning I only have 2 good ones to use.

Ok so I was trying to install dell quickset which doesn't work no matter what I do since I upgraded to 8gb or ram and installed a ssd. The main problem is I don't have the pagefile turned on so windows won't boot and safe mode boots but only has 240MB of ram and it so full you can't run anything.I have no system restore points. All I need to do is undo the max memory setting. Tried last known config, running msconfig in safe mode, bcdedit.

I've bought new laptop recently, everything works great, but there is still one problem. If I am working without the charger, on battery, the screen brightness always jumps to maximum. I have it on 30% in my power plan, and there it stays as 30%, but the brightness is still on maximum. If I press FN+F4, I could decrease it for a couple of seconds, and then it goes up again by itself...
I have tried all possible settings in Windows, also have downloaded all new drivers (but there are not a lot of them as Inspiron 1564 is new model). I have found one possible reason also, there should be "Display Brightness" field in BIOS, but there is no such option in my version of BIOS.

I found out that the partition size exceeded the roughly 200Gig (approximately or less - from running Vista on two machines). I was not sure if the maximum partition size was dependent upon the operating system or the motherboard chip-set.I ended up crashing my original ATA 133 500 gig drive on the C: partition. The drive was an ATA drive and my plan is to install a Blu-Ray / DVD RW drive. Currently I have a DVD Read Write installed and it wouldn't hurt to keep both of the optical drives on the motherboard's ATA pins. This will delegate the 500 gig Maxtor drive to a USB backup or possibly for my PS3. This leaves the 1TB drive and a couple of questions.1) I intend to partition the 1TB drive in into 2 partitions. This is to prevent the loss of the entire partition (as what happened to the ATA drive) and protecting the second partition for downloads and backups. For a reasonable price I can add another (up to 8) SATA drive[s] and rather than use them to automatically copy the other SATA, I will add additional storage.(2) The mainboard was made for compatibility with Vista (another question). Am I correct in assuming that the MSI CoreCell(tm) nForce 570 Chipset board with an AM2 AMD Athlon(tm) 64/FX/X2 Processors and 2 Gig or ram will not operate properly (true multitasking) with Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) operating system. Am I better off waiting for a true i5 board?

The other day I bought a new HDD, and decided to do a clean install of Windows 7 for it. After getting it all installed and installing all the drivers and Windows updates, I decided to watch a movie. I then realized that the audio volume was (as a ballpark guess) 20-30% quieter than I was used to. I rebooted and loaded up the old Windows install, since I still have it, and started up the movie and the volume was back to the level that I was used to.Reinstalled drivers; From motherboard website, from Realtek website, and even went over and backed up the drivers on my old install to reinstall on the new drive.Checked all audio panel settings, made sure everything was turned up and set the same as my old install. Made sure it wasn't an issue with the media player program I was using; Reinstalled it and made sure the settings were the same as my old install. [code]
