Ejecting External Media
Nov 28, 2010why should I go through the icon dismount instead of just pulling the media when file transfer is done?
I've done it with SSD's directly many times with no problems. perhaps platter drives need time to park?

Are there pros and cons to using an external drive vs an internal for movies on WMC? My plan is to buy a 1 TB external, hook it up as USB to the media PC and watch movies off it. I don't know if there are performance issues if its done that way or not. Any suggestions?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to move my operating system from the preinstalled HD to a SSD I just installed in my laptop. I know that it is typically recommended to do this using the recovery media on DVD or USB but I don't have an optical drive or a large enough USB (if I can't get anything to work I'll just have to go buy one). I also am hesitant to use Acronis to clone the OS to the SSD as I've heard that there are problems with using an OS that was originally installed on an HD with an SSD.
For these reasons I'm trying to use the recovery media from an external HD. Using lenovo's built in media creator I wrote to an external hard drive (there was an option for usb hard disk drive and everything) without any trouble. Then I modified the boot order so that it would boot from USB HDD first. However, when I try to actually boot from the HDD I get the error "PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable" and I can't boot or install the OS. I know that the problem isn't with the cable because I can write to the drive and see its contents.
Is there anyway to use this hard drive recovery media? Do I need to make the partition "active" or "boot" using disk management? I've been trying to get this to work for two days.
I want to do some partitioning of my hard drive and ideally would like to reclaim the space used by the recovery partition. If I copy my recovery partition (20GB) to an external HD or other media and restore it later if necessary will that work? Is there some hidden something I should know about that will come bite me in the a** if I do that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Powerpoint presentation with embedded video clips. The Smart Art doesn't animate correctly in Powerpoint 2003 (which, unfortunately, is still being used by a large number of people who need to view these files). Solution 1: I packaged for CD and included PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Outcome: The Smart Art still DOESN'T animate; Embedded videos WILL play
Solution 2: Instruct the end users to download and install PowerPoint Viewer 2010 Outcome: The Smart Art DOES animate; Embedded videos will NOT play.
I discovered that if I open the presentation file in PowerPoint 2010 I get a warning that external medial objects have been blocked. If I click the Enable Content button, then close Powerpoint and go back to Powerpoint Viewer 2010 (on the same computer) embedded video WILL play. How does someone who does not have the full version of Powerpoint 2010 open the presentation file and enable content?
To make things even more complicated... I just opened the Help menu in Viewer. -> The Media tab indicates shortcuts for start, stop, volume, etc. Then, I opened the readme file. -> "PowerPoint Viewer does not support running macros, programs, or opening linked or embedded objects". That's a bit contradictory, isn't it? Media IS an embedded object, is it not?!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows 7 on my dell xps m1530 laptop. Till yesterday, the dvd drive was working perfectly fine, but yesterday, it just suddenly started ejecting all the cd/dvd i inserted. I tried using Microsoft trouble shooting, and when I chose that I was having a problem in playing the dvd, it started scanning for errors, and i inserted a dvd during it, it started working. But when the program ended, it found no problems. After closing the program, I inserted another dvd, and the same problem. The dvd drive is TEAC DVD+-RW DVW28SLC. I have tried reinstalling the firmware using device manager but it doesn't work.

And I have Foobar (portable) as the default program for .mp3.Usually the icons on .mp4, .avi, .mp3 files get updated with the icons of the assigned media players. But on this PC it's not working. They're still the same icons as if WMP was the default player.Does it have to do with the Standard user account? (Because on other PCs I run from an Admin account and I don't have such problems.)
View 5 Replies View RelatedHow can I make Windows Media Player stop updating media every freaking time I start it up? It always hogs up massive amount of CPU power and goes into (Not Responding) for a min while updating.I only add media files to the Windows Explorer Library so I can get indexed searches. I don't even use WMP to view files or anything. Just to burn some music CDs sometimes.I've tried deleting the files from the WMP library but the next time I open it up, it scans and updates all my files again! Is there a way to completely purge the WMP library and make it not update ever? The media center worked fine then. It was loading my ffdshow and ac3filter along as I checked it.But then yesterday I noticed that the same pop-up od recommended/express install of WMP came again. Initially I thought that it must be some bug or something, but then when my MKV and AVI files didn't work in WMC, I realized that somehow WMP x64 got triggered, and now it is using the x64 bit of WMP in WMC. And I just wanna revert back to 32-bit WMP in WMC.
