Adding Encryption/security To An External Media HDD?

View 9 RepliesI recently read the Wired article(s) all about the death of the password, and became inspired to attempt to improve my personal security measures. I recognize that simply making a better password is like putting a band-aid over a leak in a dam, but I feel like band-aids are all I have, so I'd better make due. I have looked into online encryption/hashing software, but am wondering if there are any I can trust (and if I should even bother pursuing) or if I should attempt to make one on my own.
View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I had the power go off while I was running bitlocker (to go?) on my external hdd. I was not able to pause it before this happened. I was also running BL on an internal drive. Both were interrupted. I was able to resume and finish the internal drive. I was not able to resume the external. The BL application just stop responding when I try to resume/unlock the disk. It also seems I can't restart the machine normally when BL is trying to unlock the drive.
I read somewhere on the ms support site that even with power failure, resuming is possible. This might have only applied to an internal drive. I do recall seeing the pause button for the external, with a note that I needed to pause to stop in case of data corruption or something like that. Is there a way to recover my external? Do I need to let the program "not respond" for the same time or maybe longer than the time it spent encrypting it? Could I remove the drive and make it an internal?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a network share set up with everything working. My roommates can see, read, and download files from me, and my WDTV Live can play back music, videos, etc. These folders that are shared have Security settings with the user "Everyone" with Read & execute, List folder contents, and Read set to "Allow". The problem I'm having is when I add new files to a folder that is shared; it doesn't inherit this "Everyone" username permission to it's Security tab.

Earlier this week the media center extender was having trouble playing back video. After a restart of the computer the extender was no longer connected. When I try to add a new extender I get the message "Cannot add extender". Microsoft says to enable upnp and multicast. Check. Reflashed firmware to dd-wrt. No luck. Flash back to buffalo firmware. No luck. Try an old Linksys WRT54GL I have lying around. No Luck. The event logger has this error: "Media Center Extender Setup failed as the Extender was detected on the network but the UPnP search for the Extender failed (timed out after 20000ms)." Event ID: 538 Now I've done everything I could find about enabling network discovery, allowing anything to access media and such. Network and sharing is set pretty much wide open. I've also tried switching between home and work networks. With that said, I decided to check and see what updates have been installed. It turns out that an update was applied on the day I started having problems. It says it cannot be uninstalled. View 3 Replies View RelatedWhile using Overdrive Media Console to download audio books for my Zune, I recently encountered a box stating I need to install Windows Media Player Security Update 2.5.0.1. I have tried to download this update from several sources including Microsoft and have not been able to do so. I called Microsoft and HP(I'm using a Pavillion running Windows 7), they were of no help at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Overdive Media Console, attempting to run Windows Security Update on Windows Media Player. I am running Windows 7X64 and have WMP12.From what I've seen on the web, I am certainly not the first person to run into problems here. Yet any of the "fixes" I have found do not work for me. When I open Overdrive, it tells me I need the security update for WMP. It also says that my version of security is 2.9.0.1, and to click here to update. When I do this, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. I have used the Microsoft web link for the update;it tells me it is updating, then that the update has been successful. Yet when I go back to the Media Console, same message about update needed.
I have tried this in the "normal" mode, have also tried it as "administrator", both in Overdrive and also in IE. I have also gone to C: ProgramData/Microsoft/DRM and changed the name of the DRM file.( I do note that my DRM file is empty, so I can't imagine what magic this would work anyway.) I have modified Windows Firewall to allow Overdrive and all instances of WMP. I have disabled my adblocker. I have run sfc/ scannow with no problems found. I have emptied my internet cache.
When a link is launched from IE9 and needs to open in a different application, then a couple of security questions are presented before launching it for the first time. How can I reset these questions? (the selection made) Preferably, just for that type of link. Or alternatively, for all such questions.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSome files in my external drive has a lock symbol near them, some don't. Why is this happening?
I am using Microsoft Sync and recently I had to use "Run as Administrator" for it because some files were "access denied". (I am using the drive in different operating systems in different partitions).
Should I run Sync in administrator mode, or regular? How should I arrange the security for the drive? Should I add users or everyone? (now it is creator owner, system, administrators and me -I am administrator and only user-).
I got confused because before I didn't need to use the administrator mode for syncing and I don't want it to cause problems when syncing, not to miss any files.
(When I try to give myself -username-pc/username- full control, after that it still returns to not full control, no permissions for the drive are inherited )
A while ago I was using Windows XP Pro on my laptop. I was then forced to switch completely to Windows 7, but because I had so many application and configurations done on the XP, I created a VHD from it (using this) before replacing it. Now, I want to know if its possible to set that VHD beside my current OS as dual boot.I searched and found solutions, but those are either to add a new VHD (Windows 8 mostly) to the dual boot, or loading VHD in virtual machines. Also, if it is possible, can I copy the VHD on my external HDD and load it every time from there? The whole idea is because my laptop is not so powerful and it wouldn't handle VMs very well. Because of the same reason, XP Mode is not an option.Normal dual boot also is not preferred for two reasons:
1. I want my configurations which are already set on the VHD,
2. My laptop's HDD is only 150GB which does not have too much capacity left already. I can spare like 20-30GBs for XP, but I really cannot deal with the dual booting mess now! I will rarely use the XP for specific tasks, so VHD would be much easier if I will have the option.
Started using robocopy to do my backups. In my command lines, i can specify directories on a external drive to backup to.Some directories show up and i see everything. My most important directory " my documents" DOESNT SHOW UP. I have confirmed a backup is occuring, via log file and properties on the backup folder. I edited it down to a backup of only that folder. Log file shows good, external drive shows the "backup" root directory and properties ( size, number of files) match log file. Open up the backup folder, NOTHING LISTED. I have to run the script as adminstrator , my user is admin also, but if i run it as myself, it cant access the folder. I think im dealing with a rights issue, i have edited security on the external drive, even reformatted it , still nothing shows up?

Are there pros and cons to using an external drive vs an internal for movies on WMC? My plan is to buy a 1 TB external, hook it up as USB to the media PC and watch movies off it. I don't know if there are performance issues if its done that way or not. Any suggestions?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to move my operating system from the preinstalled HD to a SSD I just installed in my laptop. I know that it is typically recommended to do this using the recovery media on DVD or USB but I don't have an optical drive or a large enough USB (if I can't get anything to work I'll just have to go buy one). I also am hesitant to use Acronis to clone the OS to the SSD as I've heard that there are problems with using an OS that was originally installed on an HD with an SSD.
For these reasons I'm trying to use the recovery media from an external HD. Using lenovo's built in media creator I wrote to an external hard drive (there was an option for usb hard disk drive and everything) without any trouble. Then I modified the boot order so that it would boot from USB HDD first. However, when I try to actually boot from the HDD I get the error "PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable" and I can't boot or install the OS. I know that the problem isn't with the cable because I can write to the drive and see its contents.
Is there anyway to use this hard drive recovery media? Do I need to make the partition "active" or "boot" using disk management? I've been trying to get this to work for two days.
I want to do some partitioning of my hard drive and ideally would like to reclaim the space used by the recovery partition. If I copy my recovery partition (20GB) to an external HD or other media and restore it later if necessary will that work? Is there some hidden something I should know about that will come bite me in the a** if I do that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Powerpoint presentation with embedded video clips. The Smart Art doesn't animate correctly in Powerpoint 2003 (which, unfortunately, is still being used by a large number of people who need to view these files). Solution 1: I packaged for CD and included PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Outcome: The Smart Art still DOESN'T animate; Embedded videos WILL play
Solution 2: Instruct the end users to download and install PowerPoint Viewer 2010 Outcome: The Smart Art DOES animate; Embedded videos will NOT play.
I discovered that if I open the presentation file in PowerPoint 2010 I get a warning that external medial objects have been blocked. If I click the Enable Content button, then close Powerpoint and go back to Powerpoint Viewer 2010 (on the same computer) embedded video WILL play. How does someone who does not have the full version of Powerpoint 2010 open the presentation file and enable content?
To make things even more complicated... I just opened the Help menu in Viewer. -> The Media tab indicates shortcuts for start, stop, volume, etc. Then, I opened the readme file. -> "PowerPoint Viewer does not support running macros, programs, or opening linked or embedded objects". That's a bit contradictory, isn't it? Media IS an embedded object, is it not?!

I recently purchased a lenovo laptop for home purpose around 1.5 months back. The laptop was having already microsoft security essentials (MSE) and mcafee antivirus plus software. Unfortunately, yesterday i was facing blue screen on death type of error (BSOD) error. On one forum, I found that it may be due to the mcafee antivirus software. So, I uninstalled the software as per suggestion. Why MSE was not able to detect this bsod error? Moreover, why mcafee, which itself is a anti-virus software, was causing this issue?
Morever, I want to install good free antivirus software. I am totally confused whether should I install the antivirus software or, the internet security software. Please throw more light on good free internet security software from longer perspective. (I just found that almost all free trials are only for 1 month only)? Moreover, why built-in windows firewall and microsoft security essentials (MSE) are not enough for detecting malacious software. Why extra internet security software or antivirus software is required ?
I bought Windows XP Ultimate and setup my computer with Bitlocker, using a USB key for the encryption key. After setting everything up and confirming it all works, I thought I would make a copy of this USB key. When I look at the USB stick using Windows Explorer or via a Dir command through a DOS prompt, I don't see any files on the USB stick. Is this normal? Is there no way to make a copy of the stick, I would have thought I would have seen files on it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a notebook PC, and was quite annoyed to find that Intel has magically removed the ability to change the Centrino N 130 wireless adapter's MAC address. Before the nutters get in here with accusations of "illegal" activity, I feel obligated to point out that there is nothing "illegal" about changing the MAC address on my own property. Briefly, I want to pose my notebook as a hypothetical attacker, trying to bump one of my other wireless devices off the router by assuming its MAC address. I don't really know what would happen if I did this, because, like I said, Intel artificially crippled the Centrino N 130 through its Windows 7 drivers. Rather paternalistic of them.Another benefit of the proposed experiment: showing the futility of MAC filtering in keeping out the "bad guys." I have been convinced of this for some time, but been simultaneously unable to demonstrate it to my own satisfaction. There is no substitute for actually trying something, rather than just reading about it.
I am also a little annoyed at the Centrino N's (lack of) performance. I have yet to have it connect at greater than 72 Mbit/s, even while sitting less than 10 feet from the router with a clear line of sight.FWIW, my router is a NetGear WNR3500v2. N wireless is enabled. As far as I know, this router is capable of supporting a full 300 Mbit or so 802.11n wireless connection, as long as the wireless NIC on the other end is doing its part (which mine doesn't).With all that in mind, can someone suggest an N-capable wireless NIC that is not purposely crippled by its manufacturer? I would prefer an internal mini-PCIe card, but Intel seem to be the only ones making those. Even a G-capable or USB device would probably serve the purpose, if that's all that's available.
