View 2 Repliessometimes I get this icon in my tray : . I guess it belongs to MC. I think it eats my resources and it even tries to turn on my TV card (LED is on) even if I don't intend to watch TV. I suppose that behaviour is unacceptable. My question is how to disable MC completely to perform any actions in the background while I work with my PC. In another words how to keep MC completely inactive unless I myself run it. In the process viewer I have gathered this is ehrec.exe executable.

I downloaded Windows 7 last night and started the install, it got up to the point where it checked for Vista SP1 and stopped. I had reinstalled Vista recentely and forgotten to install it.
I quit the Windows 7 install and installed SP1 for Vista. Now every time I try to launch the Windows 7 install I get the following error:
"The unattend answer file contains an invalid product key. Either remove the invalid key or provide a valid product key in the unattend answer file to proceed with Windows installation."
I tried deleting the temp file that was in the same directory as the install files for Windows 7 as well as deleting the expanded set up directory and letting it re unpack the files.
a few months back, I use windows update to install a windows update. After, some strange things have hapend. When I booted my computer on, my monitor went into powersave mode and wouldent come out of it, so I switched the port and it worked fine. I then went to play minecraft, I noticed it was very laggy. I checked my system score and it has dropped by 1.1 points for some reason. I tried to use recovery to roll back the update but it didnt make a difference, so I tried to re-install the OS. I went to control pannel -> Recovery -> advance recovery methods and reinstall windows. It restarted, and once it restarted and boots into the part when I am reintalling the OS it it gives an error:"The unattended answer file contains an invalid product key. Either remove the invalid key or provide a valid product key in the unattended answer file to proceed with this windows installation."What I have tried:
Re entering the product key
Try to install it many times
reinstalling drivers
using recovery
Is there any way we can disable any particular Windows update?
My laptop is Lenvo thinkpad edge 14 which is having a Bluetooth 2 compatible hardware. And I'm using Home Premium x64. I can see the windows update driver for Bluetooth 3.0 is available for download, and it is automatically getting the driver downloaded! The problem is laptop getting restarted very frequently without any information on eventlog! a sudden restart! As per my primary investigation I can see only this one as a culprit.
Does anyone know a good way of disabling the Windows update restart prompt completely? I have disabled the 15 minute auto restart timer but I still get the prompt to restart popping up when I am trying to play a full screen game. The best thing I have found so far is an AutoHotKey script that automatically clicks postpone which is fine for normal computer use but the problem is that my games still minimize for the short time the popup is displayed.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have tried every way possible in Win 7 to set up a file association with '.pub' files and Microsoft Publisher, with no luck. Normally under 'Control Panel' - 'Default Programs' - 'Set associations' you can browse for program and when selected you can make it the default program for the particular extension. I simply can not select the MS Publisher executable for association - it is just ignored. I suspect this may be a registry issue but am not sure where and how to fix it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOne of my drives in raid0 crashed and fortunately I had windows 7 x64 backup activated and running daily. After recreating the array with the remaining drives, I tried to restore from the external usb drive but it didn't work. Apparently the problem is that I had been running "file backup" and not "image backup". Probably because when I configured backup for the first time, it asked to back up all my drives which was not possible and not needed so didn't check the image backup button.
Now the backup set is visible only from within windows (I set Windows 7 again up) but NOT from the restore part of Windows 7 setup / recovery disk. Files inside the backup set are not .vhd but zipfiles. All my c: drive files actually ARE inside the backup set, but running restore will restore all the crap folders (like c: vidia) except from the system folders like c:windows, c:program files (and x86), c:programdata etc.
Any way to restore these? I am thinking of the possibility of somehow restoring all the files and running windows repair on top of this to actually make c:drive bootable again. My users folder is not affected as I had moved it to d: but this presents the additional challenge of being able to actually make the system see the users folder....
I have been given the challenge to make a way to install Windows without any installation media and without having to even touch the computer while it's installing. So far I've made a .wim image with the help of this guide and I've made an Autounattend.xml file with thI put the install.wim image in the sources directory on a flash drive and the Autounattend.xml file in the root of the flash drive, and it does exactly what I want it to - all except it's not on a partition. So I move it to a partition and add a boot entry using EasyBCD. It boots fine, but it acts like the Autounattend.xml file isn't even there. So right now I have the choice of hands free installation with media, or manual installation without media. My main question is why the Autounattend.xml file isn't working when I boot the same media from a partition

I have also tried using the file name Unattend.xml per other suggestions. My Autounattend.xml file does not get recognized. No errors are shown, but I explicitly set the locale, language, etc., to US English (en-Us), but I am still prompted by the Windows 7 DVD to select these settings.

Here's the problem: To get the volume slider on the keyboard to work, I need to install Launch Manager. I found the download on the website and extracted it. When I run setup.exe though, absolutely nothing happens. It doesn't even show up for a split second in task manager.
I tried the same file on another computer and it ran just fine. I installed .Net framework as well as the C++ Runtime Distributable. No change. I've tried to run in compatibility as well as an administrator. I also tried Dependency Walker, it had this to say:
I tried downloading the new IE, no change, even tried DLing the DLL and putting it in the folder and that had no change either.
Recently I've been getting a "windows cannot find the specified file, please make sure that you have typed the name correctly and please try again." error message every time I try an open any file named setup.exe or uninst.exe. I have scanned this PC with AVG, Avast, Malware Bites and IObit to no avail. I believe the problem first surfaced when un-installing AVG and the Tune Up Utilities program and then installing Avast.

We have a number of users who have been given 32bit Windows 7 laptops for remote, home and office working.
I have been asked to create a batch file so that as soon as the user comes into the office they plug the laptop into the network and it should use the wired connection automatically to access the corporate LAN. As soon as they work away and need to access the corporate network remotly they do not need to press the wireless button on the laptop, when the laptop is switched and logged on i want the laptop to know that it is not on a wired network and for the wireless to kick in.
I have created two bat files -
netsh interface set interface Wireless Network Connection Disable
and
netsh interface set interface Wireless Network Connection Enable
these have been placed in task scheduler under create a basic task. I have tried both of these in cmd prompt but they still don't work.

New computer above and my previous computer have Windows Updates for the same file with no KB number. Both computers have tried to install the update numerous times but fail. It says the file is Windows Internet Explorer 9. I get an error code 9C48 for which I find little info The new machine was put together April 11 and shows IE9 being installed on that date and I am already running IE 9.
The problem started when I had three updates that would not install at shutdown. I tried to run check disk and system file checker which neither would run initiallyCheck disk runs now and says there are no problems. SFC says "Window Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." As for Windows update, I have tried deleting the temp update files located atC:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. I have also tried to Resource readiness tool as well as Microsoft Fix It for windows update. The fix it tool says it finds errors and fixes them but the problem is not fixed. It shows up every time I run the tool. Since deleting the temp files, windows update just says "Windows could not search for new updates" with and error code of 80070002.I suspected a virus at first but was unable to find anything with a full scan of AVG and Malware Bytes. Guess that doesn't mean there is not one.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to be able to upload jpeg files to our website and the software package I use for that requires that the filename be entered in lower case in the format "filename.jpg". However, I've recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and note that JPG is being added in uppercase after my typed fileneme so that I end up with "filename.jpg.JPG" which is rejected by the uploading software. My web designer tells me that this is attributable to automatic file type recognition in Windows 7, and not to the upload software. How can I switch that off?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am the proud owner of a Windows 7 Ultimate comp with 6gb ram, i7 920, etc... I have had this comp for about 1.5 years, and it has been slowing down... The bootup time has slowly been increasing, and the amount of time for me to actually be able to use programs once I see the desktop has increased. I have disabled all but the completely necessary startup programs/services, but this does not seem to work.
Whenever I start up my computer, sometimes I open task manager and check out the performance window and every time my computer is slow, I see the hard faults skyrocket. At startup, the thing is over the max shown on the graph for a while. To my knowledge, the hard faults/sec represent that the computer is either writing to or reading from the page file.
Anyway, down to the real question: Would disabling the page file decrease startup times, by forcing the computer to write everything to the ram, instead of tying up the already-slow hdd by writing/reading the page file?
