Boot.ini File

Sep 27, 2009

I am not sure that it is called boot.ini file in Win 7, but here goes. I had to clean install Win 7 again because I crashed it on the same HDD I was using before. When I did that, I deleted all the partitions and then created them again to try to eliminated problems such as the one I have.

On startup I get a window with two Window 7's listed and it has me pick which one i want for startup. I always pick the top one, but I'm not even sure that matters.

I did a search on C drive (the OS drive) for boot.ini with show system files and folders turned on. Zip, nada absolutely nothing.

I ran "msconfig" then opened the Boot tab. There are two Windows 7 listed there. The top one says Default but other than that they are the same. Before I do anything I would like to make a copy of the "boot.ini before deleting anything.

How do I get rid of the one file that is causing this?

Cannot Boot Into Windows 7 / File /boot/BCD Is Missing With An Error Code Of 0x0000007

Mar 26, 2011

I cannot boot into Windows because it says that the file /boot/BCD is missing with an error code of 0x0000007. If I run Repair from my installation disk and in System Recovery Options, it says that it has detected problems and asks if I want to repair it. The items it wants to repair are: " The following startup option will be repaired:Name: {bootmgr}Identifier: {9DEA862C-5CDD-4E70-ACC1-F32B344D4795}

The following startup options will be added:

Name: Windows 7 Ultimate (recovered)
Path: Windows
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)
Name: Windows Recovery Environment (recovered)
Path: Recovery9426aa67-30ff-11e0-a348-506313b5e718Winre.wim
Windows Device: Partition=C: (476938MB)

A copy of the current boot configuration data will be saved as C:BootBCD.Backup.0002"If I click yes, it says that it cannot save the current settings for the BCD and refuses to continue. When I choose Startup Repair, it attempts to fix the problem but fails.

The problem details are:

Root cause found:
No OS files found on disk.
Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed. Error code: 0x3bc3

I think that this is because Startup Repair is trying to fix the thumbdrive that I keep my Windows 7 install files in. I am overseas now and as my computer does not have an internal optical disk drive and my external drive is back home, thus using my thumbdrive is the only way to access the repair console.

I tried running a few commands, namely:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Fixmbr and fixboot work, but when I run RebuildBCD, it detects C:Windows as having a Windows installation, but if I type Y(yes) or A(all), it says that the requested system device cannot be found.

Dual Boot Boot.ini File

Aug 31, 2009

I am currently successfully dual booting Vista and Windows 7 RC 7100. My question is in anticipation of dual booting the final version of Windows 7 when it comes out, and Vista. Because the Windows 7 boot file is different from the boot file of previous versions of windows, is it STILL MANDATORY to install the OLDER version of windows FIRST (VISTA) and then Windows7?

Open Boot .Img File

Mar 6, 2012

I have a boot image (.img extension) of 6kb which is mounted with grldr on a USB flash drive and it boots up fine. It actually only writes out a few sentences together with an ASCII art image and that is exactly what it should do. However I can't find a way to edit the .img file. Nero, Winrar, ISOBuster and ImgBurn can't find any files/data in it and if I simply open it with notepad it gives me a bunch of unknown chars together with the ASCII art and the sentences which have to be written out. Naturally I tried editing the senteces and the ASCII art but after I save it under the same name and with the same extension and mount it on the USB flash drive with grldr it boots up in grldr GUI and when I select the .img file to boot it just comes up with the title of the image file and nothing more on a black screen.

Invalid BOOT.INI File?

Jun 30, 2011

I've got an old computer that is running Windows XP that I've decided to upgrade to Windows 7. After a bit of trouble, I managed to get through the installation process. At least I think I've got through the installation process - the problem starts soon after the bit where you have to name the computer. Soon after, the computer has to restart, but when it does there are some strange noises from the computer and an error flashes onto the screen for a second:Invalid BOOT.INI fileBooting from C:\windows\And then the screen just goes black. I had to boot it up using the Windows 7 CD again and I tried going on repair installation. It checked, tried and failed to repair. Under details it said "A recent driver installation or upgrade may be preventing the system from starting".I haven't added any new hardware during the installation process - all that was connected was the keyboard, USB mouse, monitor and power cable.

I have Vista Home Premium 64 Bit and Windows 7 64 Bit. As you see I am dual booting. I had Vista installed first.I installed Win 7 later.Everything was fine.

I installed cuipid a program that monitors, memory,CPU,etc. on Win 7. I used the PC aftyer that for a couple of hours.I shut doem, the next day I booted up went in to Windows 7(set as Default). It was fine.I resarted and arrowed to Vista to boot into Vista.

I got a Black sctreen saying: Windows failed to start. Hardware or software change may be the problem. I went into 7 and restored the system back to before I installed Cuipid,No Luck.

The screen that comes up when I try to boot into Vista says:

1 Insert windows Disk and restart.

2.Choose your choose your language and click next.

3. Click repair your PC./

I tried a repair on Vista and &.

On the page I also get error: File/windows/system/32/Winload exe.

Status: Qxc000000F

then selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

I know there is a way to restore the Boot manager from Cmd??

I would appreciate it if anyone could advise me how to restore the Boot Sector.

How To Boot Windows 7 From A File And Not From A DVD Or Bootable USB

Oct 25, 2012

My DVD ROM is causing problems and frequently not working. I am currently using Windows 7 32 bit. I would like to perform a clean reinstallation of Windows 7 on my PC. I have the Windows 7 DVD.

I know about creating a bootable USB or a bootable DVD. But I dont want to format my USB drive to make it a bootable USB device. My Questions are--

1. Instead are there any ways to boot from a file in a USB flash drive, without formatting and making a bootable USB device?

2. I would also like to learn about the basics of high level formatting. I searched google and have read articles at kioskea and howstuffworks, but none has exclusive easy articles on How Formatting Works and How to Format any Disks (including USB drives).

No Boot Corrupt Rregistry File(s)?

May 25, 2012

I was asked by a friend to try and fix her laptop. I don't know any of the history that lead to this problem, So trying to fix this has become a bit difficult. When trying to boot it loads in the BIOS screen what seems like a little too long, and then it will start to load Windows7/Vista (I don't even know what OIS is running, that's how much I don't know about this laptop)(It was just dropped off at my house with a note) and I get the Windows Startup repair screen. After running the startup repair it says that the problem cannot be fixed automatically and in Signature7 of the repair it says CorruptRegistry. I have tried a backup point and there weren't any ever created. I try to run system restore or the Toshiba recovery and nothing happensI am aware that I may have to restore the laptop but I'm not even sure if the person has the disc anymore[CODE]

Boot File For Windows 7 Corruption

Jan 7, 2013

Recently i've run into an issue with a particular boot file or driver "wdf0 1000.sys" getting corrupted. The first time I didn't know what caused the issue due to start up repair not working, so I did a clean reinstall of Windows. This time I backed up everything luckily, because sure enough it happened again, but this time I was able to see the problem. I want to know if there's a way to prevent that driver/file from messing up, because it will be a real annoyance to have to restore my back up over and over again.

Grub Boot Error 15, File Not Found

Jul 23, 2012

I just recently returned from a trip out of town and found when I tried to boot my computer I had a Grub boot error 15, file not found. I've never heard of grub4dos before I began trying to figure out what was wrong with my computer and found that it is used for dual booting. I run windows 7 ultimate x64 and have never dual booted my machine. While my laptop itself is not password protected, I do require a password to get into windows.

get around the required password to install grub4dos, install linux, then copy my hard-drive, leaving it useless when they're done? If not, is there some other way, a virus or trojan, that could cause windows to fail and revert to grub? I did remove my hard-drive, put it into an external case and try to look at it on another computer. In the disk manager it shows that it's healthy, has 465gb avail and the format is RAW.

Windows Failed To Start: File: Boot/bcd

Nov 20, 2012

I have a computer I am trying to refurbish. The old hard drive failed. I purchased a new hard drive. The CD/DVD player on the computer does not work, but I am able to boot from a USB. I was able to install Ubuntu from USB with no problems and now have a new copy of windows 7, 32 bit (computer is also 32 bit). I have tried to boot from the windows copy on the USB drive using many different tutorials as well as using the windows USB/DVD download tool. Each time I boot from the usb stick, a screen comes up that says windows failed to start. It says it may be due to a hardware problem. All other solutions to this involve using the recovery CDs or partition which I am not able to because the CD/DVD drive is broken, and I would like to not have to buy another one.

Windows 7 Boot Manager - File Cannot Be Recognized

Nov 10, 2012

Recently I changed the boot logo/screen on my computer to a custom one. When I got tired of it and wanted to change it back, I googled how I could restore it. Running the CMD as admin and typing "bcdedit %WinDir% /l en-US" would restore it back to its original boot logo. I tried it and then restarted my computer as instructed. As soon as it starts to boot up I get a message from the "Windows Boot Manager" telling me that there is a file that cannot be recognized: "windows/system32/winload.exe" My drivers for my keyboard are out of date apparently as I cant press "enter" to continue. It told me i could alternatively insert my windows 7 disc and restart. I inserted that disc and restarted and the same screen comes up.

Dell XPS Windows 7 64-bit Won't Boot Past Classpnp.sys File

Feb 10, 2013

I've been scouring the internet trying to fix a boot issue with my Dell XPS 420. It worked fine last week but on Saturday started to blue screen. I installed a new HD and installed a fresh copy of Win7 64-bit. I reinstalled my ATI video drivers but nothing else (e.g. I had to update a load of codecs for Win7 on the other install). I tried booting again from the original hard drive and everything came back with no errors. I left the PC up overnight, and now I get the same blue screen with various errors. So I disconnected from that hard drive and tried to boot from the fresh install, now it blue screens there as well. So I hit F8 and tried to boot in Safemode with Networking. Hangs at the casspnp.sys file. Then tried to boot from the DVD and repair but the repair only gets so far and yet another blue screen.I have 8gb of RAM onboard, and I have an ATI 2400 video card installed that is jacked into a Panasonic plasma display. Other than that, I've not customized anything else. I've ruled out the RAM as I swapped it out. Could be the DVD as it was having what appeared to be I/O issues. However, it seems to work fine with I press F12 and boot from the DVD. I have this PC connected to a Port Authority KVM. I've reset the KVM as well. I also have a USB hub in the mix as well. I reseated my RAM, the DVD cables.
