View 1 RepliesI have Windows 7 Home x32 on a laptop and I want to make a admin account and hide it from the user screen, I not only want to hide it but I want to be able to "load it" from the log on screen if I want (no CMD commands on the user accounts to use it) is this possible with 7?
Before on XP I had a hidden admin account and all I had to do was CTRL+ALT+DELETE and it would bring up my account, with windows 7 it doesn't seem to work this way. Now to be 100% clear, I don't want the default admin account (for trouble shooting) all I want is a second admin account that if needed can access user accounts on my laptop from the log-on screen by hitting some combination of keys.
for ACER 5740 G WIN 7 home premiumi enabled the administrator in WIN 7 Home Premium with a password and hide this for the log in. All other users are standard users. Now I am unable to login to the administrator log in opiton. How can I unhide the administrator log in. Since I did this I have administrator password.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy father's girlfriend is giving this Toshiba laptop to my father, and I'm charged with setting this up.Starting off, the only (non-Guest) account has been:
[HerName]
Administrator
I created:
[HisName]
Adminsitrator
So when you boot up Windows 7, it lands here:
[HerName] [HisName]
Administrator Adminstrator
1) To put [HisName] first, on the left?or better yet, 2) Remove [HerName] from the logon screen, keeping the account so it can be switched to?
BAsically, I've 2 accounts:
Admin- 'A', Standard- 'S'.
When the logon screen appears, the admin account 'A' is selcted by default i.e. a border surrounding the username, everytime I've to manually select my account and enter password.
I just want my account 'S' to be highlighted by default when the logon screen appears. And no, i don't want to use the automatic login option. Just what I mentioned above.
I'm currently administrator of a couple different groups of computers at a university, and I've been looking into changing the layout of the logon screen. I've found a lot of information, but something that I have wanted from the start has eluded me. I'd like to set the logon screen (or welcome screen I suppose) to display only one available account: the guest account that I have personalized for professors or students to use (not the same as the default Windows guest account). I would also like to have the option to switch users at the logon screen, preferably with the on-screen button that says switch users which I can't seem to get to display using my methods.
System Specs All of the PCs I am administrating have some differences... Simply put, I have a bunch of desktops running Windows 7 Pro x64, and a bunch of NetBooks running Windows 7 Starter x86. I've made my attempts on one of the NetBooks thus far since I can carry it around. On Windows 7 Starter it seems that "Switch User" is disabled, but I think it is still in the PC because when I tried a Registry Hack that hides all user accounts except the one that was last logged into, I had the option to switch users, but only when the account I last used had a password. The guest account does not and cannot have one. Anyway, the registry hack I just mentioned involves going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE..... and creating a bogus key under the ProfileList key.
I also tried a similar thing to the above which didn't work, I can't remember what it was though.I have also tried hiding the default administrative account I made while keeping the other account visible, but this results in me not being able to log into that account from the Login screen, and the system will automatically login to the guest account because it doesn't have a password. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I need a way to get into the other account. This was done by changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOF... and adding the account to hide as a 32 bit DWORD. Don't hide all of your administrator accounts in this fashion, or you'll be screwed FYI.
The third thing I tried was adding an entry for fast user switching and enabling/disabling it, in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOF.... and adjusting the "HideFastUserSwitching" key. This didn't seem to have any effect.I also tried various combinations of the above, but that didn't get me the outcome I was looking for either. This has all been on the netbook, but I'm looking for a solution that will work on the NetBooks and the Desktops.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo today I by mistake made my regular admin just user and not an admin and my hidden account my admin. I tried to make my hidden account accessible but I cannot change it from 0 to 1 without admin user name and password, I could press Shift Right click and run as different user, but the main problem is I did not password protect my hidden user and when I just type in my Admin name and no password it says Logon failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank password (I don't have one) logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMom bought a Win 7 puter so that my 15 year old grandson, who lives with them, could use it for school work, and play games. She uses it a little to email, IM, and play card games. Mom and dad are in their 70s and don't know anything about puters. They barely know how to use a remote control on a cable box. My grandson began downloading games that install BHOs, toolbars, plugins, etc that slow the machine down till it hangs frequently. I took it, created an admin account, cleaned off a billion toolbars, BHOs and unwanted games, and their tracking cookies, some Trojans, and viruses, and the machine began to respond again, but as soon as he gets hold of it, he accesses the User's Control Panel and lowers my privileges, so that I can't function as an administrator on mom's puter. This upsets the rest of us. He says he has to have admin privileges to install and play his games, and, that I keep messing up his stuff.
I've tried creating an admin account and hiding it from the logon screen, and the User's Control Panel, but that also makes it so I can't logon, not even in safe mode. Seems MS made Win 7 so that if there is just one admin account activated it sees no need for any other admin accounts to display in Safe Mode. I tried the following, "Hide the Admin Account" hack, but Win 7 would not allow me to logon, since I found no way to activate a logon run dialog, nor could I use Safe Mode, cause with His admin account visible, my admin account isn't, not even in Safe Mode.I noticed a thread entitled: Hidden Administrator Account? on this forum, which led me to ask you about this. I'm a "slightly" above average user, so be gentle.I need something hidden from him, even in the User's Control Panel, so that I can maintain this puter and put a stop to his ability to lower my privileges. Any suggestions, other than lowered privileges?Instructions to Hide the Admin Account from the Default Login Screen:You can hide accounts the same way you did in XP, but in Vista and Win 7 you need to create those registry keys.
1.In regedit, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon.
2.Right click Winlogon and select New / Key.
3.Name the new key SpecialAccounts (case sensitive).
4.Right click The SpecialAccounts key and select New Key again.
5.Name the key UserList.
6.Click the UserList key and in the right side window right click and select New / DWord (32bit) Value.
7.Name the new DWord value with the same name as the account you wish to hide. Double click this value and in the Value Data line enter 0 (zero) to hide the account or 1 to show the account.
I recently was given a laptop to fix up by my brother in law that seems to be infected with a nasty troublesome Trojan.Anyways I cannot login to his username with the password he has provided me with and he has some documents that he would like me to backup if possible.o, I was wondering if their is a way to get into the hidden admin account within the login screen, I hate how Microsoft disabled the feature of hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del to get into the admin account. So I was just wondering if their was another way to get in, I've already tried Safe Mode and the hidden Admin account doesn't pop up.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI need to login into a hidden administrator account on Windows 7. There are a few complications.
1) The built-in administrator account is hidden, and as described below, I cannot elevate my privileges.
2) I created an administrator account, called "Secure," but it's completely invisible! By using an unsupported (and stupid) registry tweak, I have hidden the "Secure" account from view, such that even in UAC prompts, the "Secure" account isn't visible and I am unable to elevate my privileges. This means that I cannot get beyond any UAC prompt.
How can I either login or elevate to the hidden, built-in "Administrator" account or to the "Secure" administrator account that I created and then obscured through an unsupported registry hack? Note that I cannot undo my changes to the registry that obscured the "Secure" account because I can't run regedit with the necessary privileges. Note that due to my unsupported registry hacking, the "Secure" account does not appear on the login screen that displays at startup. I cannot login to the "Secure" account by selecting "Switch User."
I cannot find any way to access a Username/Password login prompt anywhere in Windows 7. I could login to the "Secure" account, if only I could access a username/password login prompt. I know the password for the "Secure" account -- I created it, after all! I cannot run a command prompt with administrator privileges. I even booted into Safe Mode, but that does not give me the option to login to the "Secure" account, either!
To get a prompt that includes a username and password field from within Windows 7 -- even in a Standard (non-Administrator) account follow these steps.
1. While holding down the Shift key, right-click the program you want to run.
2. Select "Run as a different user."
3. Type the username and password of the account.
This will not work for disabled user accounts, like the built-in Administrator account. To use the built-in Administrator account, you first have to enable it. This does work for hidden (but still enabled) user accounts. This will allow you to run a program as though you were a different user.
I have enabled the hidden admin account in windows 7 and I picked up a virus...it won't let me do nothing...I have tried installing antivirus but it keeps giving me an error message that says the application I am trying to open is infected and it won't open it....
now I can log into the other account and work fine, however these accounts do no admin priviledges!
so my question is can I delete the current hidden admin acct and recreate a new one? or is there anyway around my problem, basically how I can I restore the account back to normal.
I'm posting this for a friend who has some issues with a corporate laptop. They have everything installed as "username" and all their files on their desktop or in their documents folder. For some reason now, when they logon it says: "Windows is preparing your desktop" and then it logs in and has some notification about using the default account. All the folders are empty, the desktop is empty and the wallpaper is just black. If you navigate to 'C:Users"username"' you can see that everything is still there and it seems that it has created a folder called "temp.domainname" and is using that. Any help on reverting back to "username" and not "temp"?
P.S. The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit
Is there any way that I can make the activated default/hidden Administrator account to show up only when booted in Safe Mode but not when in Normal Mode.

View 4 Replies View RelatedGot an HP Mini 110 netbook. A person who gave it to me destroyed all the OS system, plus the RAM's were broken. So I replaced them and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Starter 32bit. Everything works fine, but as most new laptops this one has a hidden recovery partition. The problem is I want to restore this machine to factory condition, but I cant access it due to the fact that I dont have HP Recovery Manager or something like that. The recovery partition itself is okay as I saw in Admin Tools. When going to System Recovery Options / System Image Recovery, the process cant detect any image - "Windows cant find a system image on this computer".
what could I use to restore it to factory condition? Maybe there is a software that I can install and use in the same way as HP Recovery Manager? Or maybe I can get HP Recovery Manager somewhere. so that you know, I also tried the F6 and itc methods, no luck.
i got myself a new (used) mainboard and graphics card, and also switched from xp to windows 7 64. i backed up all the files i needed on one of my hard drives. now a number of these files were kept hidden on my old system, some of it being just plain p**n, some being genuine personal stuff. now i cant access any of it anymore. i kept the old xp system intact on one of the drives, or at least thats what i thought - i tried to boot it up today so i could remove the "hidden"-tags manually, but it wouldnt boot at all.

View 15 Replies View RelatedRecently my XP machine bite the dirt and on one of its IDE NTFS HD contained a few folders with hidden and encrypted files. Thinking this was a decent way to keep family members from touching my work, I never excepted them to become inaccessible after I installed Win 7 Pro 64bit.
My problem is that I am unable to open, or move any of the encrypted and hidden files within the folders, yet I am able to only copy the folders, but without the files contained within, as I receive permissions errors.
When I try to move one of the files, I get a File Access denied error stating "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file", I press continue, and I get another error "Your require permission from Administrators to make changes to this file".
My user account "Mark" is an Administrator within the Administrators group, and I have set User Acccount Control to it's default setting. I have also enabled the hidden default Administrator account, logged in as it, and receive the same errors. If it makes any difference, the username of my XP machine was PHOENIX/Administrator
When I view the file attributes, Read-only, and Hidden are not selected, but under Advanced "Encrypt Contents" is selected. If I click details, I receive an EFS error "Unable to find the user information for the file", and another window appears called User Access with all of its options grayed out.
If I took at the Security Tab of one of the files, it says "You must be an administrative user with permissions to view this objects security properties", I click continue, and it shows the Administrators group (PHOENIX Administrators) with allow full control selected. After pressing ok, I click on Advanced, I click on the Owner Tab, and current Owner says "Unable to display current Owner", so I click on Edit, and I have the option to change owner to PHOENIX Administrators or PHOENIXMark, I chose Mark, press Apply and close and reopen the windows. I then try to move the file again, but this time the error says "I need permission from PHOENIXMark to make changes to the file"
I've had no problems accessing the other files from the XP HD, but I've spent weeks now combing forums for solutions, and I just can't access the hidden and encrypted files from the XP hard drive. I was able to access one encrypted and hidden spreadsheet without a problem, so I don't understand why I cannot access these two groups of folders and the files within their subfolders.
I was trying to display Hidden Folders/files to access an appdata folder under C:Usersusernameappdata. (it's to fix an issue with the game Dead Space 2) Anyway, I opened My Computer, then C drive, then Users. In here, I right clicked on empty space and opened properties. I checked 'Hidden' and apply. Said it needed administrator rights, I accepted. Then most desktop items disappeared, most files from my documents disappeared and after reboot, The ATI catalyst control centre is popping up an error message saying 'failed to start'.I realised I chose to hide all the files within that folder instead of showing hidden files/folders..I went to folder options and chose Show Hidden file and I can see them again but they have that see through look to them. ATI catalyst still won't start on reboot. I tried system restore to yesterday but still exact same. When I go to User Properties on the C drive again, it shows the files as Read Only and Hidden is unchecked.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a computer that appears to have gone through the "Windows Recover" virus/malware. The user appeared to do a good job of removing the virus and used System Restore to dial the system back about a week (which unfortunately is the furthest back the restore points go for some reason). Everything seemed to work except for the main users account, which had it's profile locations changed to something like c:usersTEMP.username-PC.000. It was pointing to this directory instead of the original directory. I then opened up regedit and found the entries atHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerShell Folders all pointing to the wrong folder, so I manually edited every entry to point to the correct folder and restarted.
This ended up working against me. When I logged into the account none of the shell folder shortcuts in the start menu would do anything when you clicked on them. The menu would stay up and it was as if I was clicking on nothing at all; no response.Instead of reversing the edits I had just made manually I decided to try using System Restore to revert the system back to the earliest date, which the owner of the PC said they had done themselves before I got there. I figured the worst that could happen would be it would be just as it was when I first looked at it.After performing system restore I can only log into the Administrator account.Every other account on the system produced the error message "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. The user profile cannot be loaded."
