XP Mode And Memory Allocation?
Aug 4, 2011I'm running Win XP Mode on Win 7 Pro x64. XP is showing only 512mb RAM, is there a way to increase this to a full 1GB of RAM? I have a total of 4GB on the machine.

Allocation Of Memory From Drive D To C
Oct 10, 2012so I have a laptop that has around 750GB of space on it but it is split into two parts:
250GB: Drive D
500GB: Drive C
I'm running out of space on drive C and I would like to extend the space on drive C from drive D seeing as drive D is completely empty.
Also is there a method where it will not delete the files that I have on drive C?

Aug 12, 2009I'm going to fix my partition set-up (for example removing the one with Vista) and would like to know how much I should allocate to the partition with 7. (At the moment it's 32 GB.)
I am going to keep my files on a different partition. But what about the "program files"? Is it "better" to have them on the same partition as windows 7 or not? How big "should" the 7 partition be?

Mar 21, 2011Before putting my machine into sleep mode, my RAM usage is about 1.2gb. After resuming from sleep, it has dropped to about 700mb which is about a half gig of memory recovered. However all the same programs are still running, but all of them now seem to take up less memory (according to Task Manager anyway). Is there a reason for this and is there a way to free up this memory without going into sleep mode?

Cluster (allocation Unit) Size For NTFS In Windows 7?
Jan 25, 2011I am using Win 7 Pro x32 and have partitioned my hard drive into two NTFS partitions. One is for my Windows other one is for my files and personal documents.I'd like to know how to format the partitions in terms of cluster size. I read a lot of articles which didn't actually answer my question - what are the differences between formatting with a big and small cluster size, and how does all that influence the overall performance. I should also mention that I am willing to sacrifice some bits and bytes from my partitions, if needed, as long as I could somehow increase performance. Also, I noticed that the standard Windows 7's formatting dialogue allows to format a partition only with a limited size of clusters compared to trying to format a partition using software such as Acronis Disk Director or Paragon Hard Disk Manager where I was able to format with a much greater cluster size. What to do, what to do...? You could save the small talk such as - 'small cluster size wastes less disk space but works slower, and vice versa, greater cluster size wastes more space but gives better performance'.

Sep 23, 2012This is an issue with trying to use the Windows Backup utility with an external hard drive (Seagate GoFlex Desk) with more than 2TB of storage (in this case 3TB). I have looked into this and found that this is a common problem related to the backup utility being unable to deal with drives that have a 4kb allocation unit size. The typical advice is to reformat with an allocation size of 512B, which it will be able to work with.
The problem is that Windows will not let me reformat with that size. The smallest unit it allows is 4kb, which is exactly the problem. If I initiate the format dialog on other NTFS drives I have, 512B shows up as an option. Just not on my external. And yet, this solution appears all over the place and people have claimed it solved their problem. I have even (twice) tried creating a second partition on the external (1.5TB and then 1TB), neither has allowed an allocation unit size less than 4k, even though my 1TB internal drive did allow this.
I am not really interested in third party backup or imaging programs. With my old 500GB external, I used the Windows Backup utility to make a few system images and there have been at least two situations where a bad driver or something has resulted in having to go back to a restore point, but finding no suitable ones available, and thus restoring to the backup image. This has been the simplest way of recovering from these disasters and it has worked every time. For normal file backups, I have a number of cloud storage systems and I can use the software Seagate included with the drive. However, the one and only reason I got a hard drive this large is that it would allow me to make a lot of Windows system images, and that is the one thing I am unable to do. I do not understand why I cannot use the one fix everyone online recommends. I have emailed Seagate tech support about this but they have not responded.

Oct 6, 2012i am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until i reboot.
machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)
versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)
browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.
normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).
Chkdsk High Memory Usage / Memory Leak?
Jun 1, 2009I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

Increased Memory Usage With Added Memory?
Nov 5, 2011I just built a new computer and started with 8GB of memory. A few weeks down the line I purchased another set of the same memory because it was on such a good deal and had great reviews (newegg). It also was working well for me, so I figured maybe more could be better.
I haven't noticed any decrease/increase in system performance except Alt-Tabbing has recently got slower. Also, Windows 7 was sitting tight on 1.3gb to 2gb of memory usage prior to the extra 8 (now 16) being added. Even when gaming, it went up to like 3gb. Now that I've added the extra it's going up to 4.5gb or better. Also, is it possible to speed up my alt-tabbing? It seems to have a good 3-4 second pause in it instead of being immediate like it was.

Oct 28, 2012To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Nov 15, 2012my computer, a Lenovo Idea pad P580 running on Windows 7, is 5 weeks old and yesterday I was using Microsoft Word to edit a document and Word suddenly crashed. So I closed it, but then the cursor started spinning and I could not access anything on my computer so I rebooted and it started up but then just trying to open Microsoft Word caused the cursor to keep spinning again and I could not access anything. So I again rebooted and this time it was spinning from the beginning. So I again rebooted and turned it on in safe mode and everything was fine. Then turned it off and left it off overnight. In the morning I tried to boot in normal mode and it did boot but it was again spinning and I could not access anything. So I again rebooted in safe mode and I can use my computer fine.And also, this is unrelated, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do to make the scroll bar stop moving on its own? Every time I scroll down a page it seems to lock the scroll bar and so when I move the cursor away from the scroll bar, the scroll bar still moves and I cannot click any links or anything on that webpage.

I am currently in Safe Mode with Networking without issue.The owner of the computer says that something happened earlier today while he was online that sounds like some false antivirus popup, but he's unsure. Here are the symptoms in normal mode. Every application, from moving through them to opening and closing them, runs exceptionally slow - one to three minutes to open, at least a minute to open internet pages. I noticed that, when in IE, as the pages are loading the IE page disappears and reappears. I am not very familiar with Windows 7 so I don't know if it is related. The computer seems to be getting slower as the day goes on. CPU usage is very high.So far, I have disabled many startup items that were unnecessary. I ran CCleaner and cleaned up. MBAM was run in both normal and safe mode, full scans, and found nothing. This is also posted in Viruses and Malware, but I'm unsure where it should live.

Oct 8, 2012I own an HP G-62-347 Notebook, Windows 7 64 bit, Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall, no other real time AV, no other Firewalls, Windows Defender disabled as Microsoft instrucs for MSE, 3 GB Raam, 313 GB HDD, AMD Dual Core P-380 processor.My Laptop began freezing 8-10 minutes after bootup logon. No matter what I was doing, Media, Excell, Word, it would freeze up and hang. Sometimes CTL_ALT_DLT would unfreeze it, even before the task manager appeared, but it will take 3-4 minutes with an o[ague screen and the progress "circle" moving then unfreeze, sork 1-2 minutes, freeze, etc. Then all clicks on something to activate would result in loooong (long) delays, 15 to 45 seconds, then the new screen or window or peogram would open, sometimes frozen up.This did not happen in safe mode.I have (on suggestions) removed all things from my start up or programs that other's have suggested, Google Update files, and three or four others that others had issues with that I found on the net. I have also removed programs that I had installed around then.
I have also run, in Safe Mode, MSE, MS Safety Scanner, MS malicious file remover, ESET online Scanner, my laptop is clean.I have used mscong to disable all non-microsoft items to see if that helped. It did not. Same issues.I have used startup repair, and after scanning received a message that there was a problem, but that it could not fix it, did I want to send a report to Microsoft, I checked yes and it sent me to System Restore, ran it for about a week ago which was when I had downloaded some software, and the problem still existed, which sent me back to System Repair, ran it, same error message, reported again.I used a Repair Disk to get back on the laptop a coulple of times when needed, but ultimately, the problem surfaced still.I have used ReImage Plus to rebuild all my defective Windows Files and a lot of my 3rd party defective files. And, I also did a Win 7 repair install.I am pretty convinced something is being loaded somewhere, but can't find where or who or what.Am I on the right track? Have I missed something? Am I wrong? I do not really want to do a clean re-install of Windows 7, for if I do I am reformatting everything to clean any and everything.... sort of NUKE it... but would rather find the culprit (for education purposes). And, I dislike installing and updating and setting up everything again more than I hate "boiled okra!"Anyone and Everyone that has had to do with this or similar sounding issue, please reply. Apr 26, 2011I have installed the 32 bit driver for my Minolta 1300W. I can print happily in XP mode but I don't seem to be able to be able to use the printer in the Windows 7 host (64 bit Pro). Should I be able to see it as a printer if I attempt to print a document in Office? Launching the application doesn't help.
