Windows Won't Start After Compressing C Drive
Jan 11, 2012
I was trying to free up some space so i compressed my C drive, something that ive done before a cpl of years back and had no problem, but this time windows wont start.
This is exactly what happened, i compressed and waited the 9 hrs and after that i also went to the control panel and uninstalled some programs that i didnt need anymore, and then there was a windows update that was waiting to be installed so i installed it ( 7 updates i believe). After the update the laptop needed to restart, so i did, and all i get is
TOLFJ Is compressed
Press ctl+alt+dlt to restart
I did so many times but i always get the same thing.I have windows 7 32 bit, and i dont have any CD's. I really need help guys, i start my thesis in 10 days and everything is on my laptop

for some reason when i try to compress some files to send over the internet the .zip file isnt much smaller than the files on their own.the files on their own are 25MB the compressed file is only 24.8MB a saving if 200kb is not really worth it.is there anyway I can make it a lot smaller?

i just cloned the OS hard drive in my computer from an 80GB to 160GB (both IDE) using acronis true image enterprise edition.
the clone process completed fine, but when i try to start the computer with the new hard drive plugged in (power and data cables disconnected from the old drive) i get the 'disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter' message when the OS is supposed to startup.
i booted to the windows 7 OS disc and chose the repair option which detected that there was a startup issue with the disk and apparently fixed it, but when i restarted the computer i still get the same error message. i also used the startup repair option from the windows OS disc but it didn't detect any issues.
the interesting thing is that i can boot the new hard drive while the OS disc is in the DVD drive, but if i take it out i get the message again. i've also tried changing the jumper settings on the hard drive (master/single to cable select) but that didn't make a difference.

Due to a windows crash, I had to reinstall windows 7 (64 bit). My windows files in on an SSD and most all of my programs are on another SATA drive. The windows install went through, but none of the programs from the other drive show up when I click on the start button/all programs (somewhat understandable). Is there any quick way to get all of the programs (office, photoshop, etc.) that are on my D drive to appear where you click on "all programs"? Also, can I just delete my windows.old folder from my C drive to free up space? Any reason it is needed? Do I just delete it?

I've seen this a couple of times before where a file that is around 1 Gb or so could be compressed in rar to around a few Mb.

While running memtest86 on a bootable cd, it froze which I then restarted my computer. It is now unable to start up Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I can reinstall Windows but would like to know if the whole event damaged my hard drive. I can only start up to where the orbs make the Windows logo before it restarts. Also there is no noise, smoke or smell coming from my hard drive. Is it possible that it is damaged beyond use and repair? Also my BIOS seems to have changed the name of the Hard drive to SATA instead of HDD

I tried installing Windows 7 64 bit OEM on a fresh hard drive but it kept crashing and now when I try booting the system seems to think Windows is installed saying ''Windows failed to start'' in boot manager. I even tried loading the computer up with a different hard drive but it STILL says that!

My computer not wanting to start up well, I went and bought a new wireless card for my computer D-link Extreme 3 antenna's 67 bucks, so I installed it into my computer, and then try starting my computer up, it does not work again! so I tried the paper clip trick and unplugged everything and the power supply booted, and then I plugged everything back in and it turned on, barely. Now my cd/dvd drive won't power on I have tried switching between different power sources on from the power supply and nothing it won't boot at all, I went into the boot sequence and it shows it in there so I am starting to wonder what is going on! I am starting to think my power supply is starting to die.

I bought a used hp tower with twin xeon dual core processors a few months ago. It was a great machime but only has dvd rom. I wanted to burn a disc but couldnt, so I tool my old ISE Dvd drive out of my old computer, bought new only about 1year ago. I insterted it and a screen came up say that my system configuration had changed and press F1 to accept the changes. I did this and then it faild to boot!
I have removed the dvd drive and tried again but the same, will not boot. I then removed the original dvd drive and you guessed it, still wont boot.
I have run windows repair but nothing. How can I get it to boot without reinstalling? I only have 1 hard drive (sata) and stupidly havent done a backup (doh!!)

I have a mapped drive that goes to a folder on my internal drive. when my computer starts up the drive will not connect automatically, but connects as soon as I click on it.
I have tried to recreate this drive a few times and always click re-connect on logon but it does not help.
It did work fine for a period so I presume i have done something to stop it working, but can't think what.
I think it may be a setting in my start up configuration (I manage this through CC Cleaner), but can't see what i've switched off.
any ideas?

So I was trying to uninstall this one driver (it caused IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL problems)
and I eventually did through safe mode but I noticed that my dvd's/cds weren't getting readand it wouldn't show up under my computer. It shows up as a BD-ROMand it was cause of Daemon Toolswhich was a known problemso I was trying to fix that too. Then all of a sudden my computer stalls at the BIOS screenand then I unplugged my D drive from one of the SATA ports
and currently that's like the only to start the computer now.I uninstalled Daemon's Toolsbut I still can't get my DVD drive to work.I changed SATA ports and it bootedbut then it tried to install CD drive drivers and then it failed. So I went back My system specs:Intel i5 quadcore 2500K processorGIGABYTE P67A-UD3 mobo500W PSUnVidia geforce gtx460

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then click "next". 3. Click "repair your computer". Ya-da ya-da..I have a Samsung SF510 laptop running Windows 7 x64. Anyways, I burned an ISO to a disk (downloaded from this forum) and put it in, and hit F4 which brought me to Samsung Recovery Solution 5 or something like that, and it has said "please wait" for the past 6 hours I've tried booting Sea Tools by putting the CD drive as my #1 on my BIOS priority boot list, but no luck. When I hit F12, then I get the error:Media test failure, check cableExiting ---Im pretty darn sure its a hard drive problem (Despite the hard drive still being recognized in my BIOS)

It's been a while, but I built my first PC a couple of months ago. So far everything works great. But now, My DVD drive doesn't show up in My Computer. I checked Device Manager, and I have an error for my driver. Here is the error:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
I have tried using Driver Fusion to wipe out all drivers and reinstall with no change. The drive shows up in BIOS so it's not a connection problem. I'd prefer not to reinstall the OS....

I am using a Dell Inspiron 14 laptop. A few days ago, I noticed that my laptop has become incredibly slow (the system will hang sometimes, and continue as per normal after a while), and this coincided with my laptop beginning to make this weird, sharp beeping sound. At first I did not pay much attention to it, but later this was joined by several BSODs, and my laptop became even slower (games that usually did not lag was now hanging halfway through, and continuing as per normal after a lengthy period of 1 minute or so). I tried to find the origin of the noise, and I think it came from my Internal hard drive sector, and thus decided to open the sector up (in hindsight I probably should not have). After I replaced it, without doing much (just doing the usual IT-amateur stuff, wiping it and blowing it a few times), my situation has now worsened to the point that startup takes a much longer time, and finally now it hangs at the "Starting Windows" screen, but without the Windows 7 logo showing, and my screen later turns black.

I have a video card that used to boot up in windows 7 - but know this computer with a GeForce 9500GT video card boots up with the Vista boot up logo.I found out this was the video card because I have another card with another GeForce video.I took the swapped the video cards, and the indication changed. The original computer booted with the windows start up screen. And the test computer booted up with the vista boot up screen.
I was told by a local computer repair facility this had something to do with video drivers.I tried what the organization suggested and uninstalled all video drivers (I used generic Windows 7 Video Drivers). Then the organization recommended downloading the latest video drivers for the GeForce 9500GT.This video card has 512GBytes of memory. I did this. Then I was told to install the newly downloaded video drivers.I resrted the computer with the Vista login screen with windows 7 operating system, and the vista login screen was displayed.

Last night I was on my computer and then I shut it down. Today when I came home from work it keeps saying windows failed to start. I tried hitting f8 and loading to the last good configuration doesn't work, safe mode same thing, repairing nothing, so my last resort was my windows 7 cd. So I went into bios and made my configuration boot from cd/dvd popped it in and restarted, a black screen came up saying windows is loading files, then the windows 7 menu came up, picked my language, next, and first I tried repair my computer, I get the little circle meaning its loading for like 5 seconds them it does nothing, rebooted again but this time I chose, install and I've been on the setup is starting for like 20 min. And forgot to mention, when it boots seem like it does good then comes to the screen where it says windows failed and gives me two options repair our start normal, if I pick repair it just reboots and start normal takes me to like the pick your user screen but its just blank no users, so I can't even restore our access the computer.

I know its not a faulty hard drive because its newly fitted and this problem occured previously on a different hard drive aswell.

I have Windows Ultimate (x64).I use the Asus Suite II supplied with my Asus Asus P8Z68-V Pro Gen3 Motherboard (which I like for fan and temperature monitoring) Ai Suite II always loads BUT "on screen" it is messy during loading because a seemingly AI Suite bar sized white artefact appears top left of screen for 10- 20 seconds before disappearing when the AI suite icon appears in the notification tray. Sometimes a white square also appears temporarily.I have noted that if I exit Ai Suite II and reload via the Asus AI suite supplied Shortcut I never get these artefacts AND the suite loads instantaneously (I note however Asus uses AI Suite II.exe via the shortcut but via the Asus installed Task Schedule it open via "AsRoutineController.exe -open"I have also tried unloading AI Suite II and AsRoutineController.exe and loading AsRoutineController.exe and it too loads cleanly and almost instantaneously.
1) Why does Asus use the Task scheduler instead of loading via the normal Windows Startup procedures?
2) Could it be so each can be easily disabled if required) and is that the ONLY reason?
3) what is the -open switch in the command line?
4) Is there ANY good reason why I should not disable the AI Suite II in the Task Scheduler and add it the the Normal Windows Startup applications I use the Free version of Startup Delayer as it has served me wonderfully with my current Win 7 O/S (and my previous XP) in ensuring all desired Notification Tray Icons display EVERY time).
Today I PROVISIONALLY made the change and AI Suite II opens cleanly (as other Startup apps) without temporary white artefacts and with no noted side effects so far. I am nervous however, to make it permanent without advice from knowledgeable Seven Forums members on this subject

I'm not sure where to even begin to fix these problems. Some online searches suggested doing a system repair but I want to get some more feedback here before proceeding. Here is the message from the event log:The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AFD
cmdGuard
cmdHlp
CSC
DfsC
discache
ElbyCDIO
[code]...
I realized some of these are not Windows 7 related but most are. While the computer "works", I do experience frequent reboots and freezes. Perhaps some of these driver loading failures are part of the cause of my issues.

When i got home today didn't my computer work, my girlfriend has been the last one using it. So don't know how things were just before the shutdown or anything.when i turn on the computer i get to the screen where "touch bios" is and where i can see the options like Bios settings, boot menu, xpress recovery.but i cant press anything, and after about two seconds on that screen the PC shuts down again. The keyword lights up so there is a responds on it, but just doesn't work to press anything before it shuts down.I've got BSOD upto several times a day for a few months time.believe that my computer is affected by some virus or something is delaying my computer. might be an combination of several things.I got no external things hugged up to the stationeer computer right now.it is a windows 7 x64 machine.
usually when i get issues i can access advanced boot up or bios, but can neither in this case..I wonder if it might be a hardware issue.

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.
