Setting Network Drives Across All Users?

Jul 23, 2012

I have a situation where I have folks logging into the domain with their respected credentials. I setup the first users with everything they needed and then realized I would need to imitate this over 4-5 other users on the same machine. Is there a way to do this more effectively rather than by hand?

I want all users to have the same network drives (I have 6 different locations) and I want them to have the same desktop icons for accessing content.

Deleting Old Vista Users Folder?

Jan 17, 2011

I had copied over my old vista Users folder and finally got around to moving over all the files. I tried to delete the folder but 3 hidden folders don't won't to delete themselves leaving me stuck with the directories.

Users_VistaUserDocuments
My Music
My Pictures
My Videos

I've tried removing them through explorer, elevated command prompt, built-in administrator account. Trying to access them gives access denied, and try to change permissions on the file gives access denied, even in administrator account.Based on the command-prompt messages it seems like the folder have actually been deleted but the reference still exists under Documents.

> dir "My Music"
Volume in drive D has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 72EC-B45D
Directory of D:Users_VistaUserDocumentsMy Music

Upgrade From Vista - Users Location Question

Nov 9, 2009

Will be doing a clean install of windows 7 64bit. Currently have vista 32bit.

Right now vista is installed on my c:, but I configured it so my user accounts and their corresponding documents are located on my d:.

Question: can I just leave my Users folder as is on the d: and once the install of Windows 7 is complete (install will be on c, point the Windows 7 Users folder to d: again? Or will doing this overwrite the Users folder already on d:?

In short, I guess, what is the best way to get my old vista user accounts (and their corresponding files/docs) setup in Windows 7?

Windows Stops From Defragment Of SSD

Aug 10, 2012

I have read that one should not defragment a SSD Drive. If this is true then... My OS is windows 7 64bt. I am have 2 256GB SSDs running in raid 1 as my 'C' drive and 2-2TB hard drives are 'D' & 'E'. My system tells me that windows is handling the defragmentation of my drives. What I would like to know is if there is a way to stop the system from defragmenting my SSD 'C' drives, but let the OS defragment my D and E hard drives. Also is there a way to control which drives the system is defragmenting?

Safe To Defragment Recovery Partition

Jul 27, 2011

I would like to know whether it is safe to defragment my recovery partition? Seeing as it is listing in the Disk Defragmenter, which states that only disks which can be defragmented are shown i am assuming that it is. I recently had to reinstall windows on one of my laptops so checked the disks for fragmentation a fews days later and i noticied that all disks had been defraged apart from C: drive and the recovery partition. I also have a brand new laptop, which is also running Windows 7 x64 and all disks were defraged apart from C: drive again. Having looked at the schedule the date/time had not come up yet so i am assuming that is why, but why would windows choose to defrag one drive but not another? Lastly, i notice Windows chooses to schedule a defrag every Wedneday at 01:00 by default so i assume if my laptop is off it will start the defrag process the next time i turn my system on, correct?

Necessary To Defragment External Hard Drive

I keep the C drive lean. All files are " moved to " my external hard drive. Meaning, most often I need to plug in my ext.HDD in order to access files.

[ACCOUNTS] Move C:users To D:users?

Jan 30, 2011

I just installed a new 64 gig SSD in my computer. I also have a 2T secondary hard drive. The SSD is not big enough to contain all the stuff that will eventually be in "My documents",i.e. under "users" so I need to move the users directory to my secondary hard drive but havewindows behave as it were in its original location.I did some research and found the following technique which seemed plausible (and several people said it worked for them)

1. Install windows normally.
2. After install, boot from installation disk.
3. Get into the command prompt by clicking "repair".
4. Use robocopy to copy c:users to d:users. The command line should be: robocopy c:users d:users /mir /xj /copyall
5. Verify all files copied successfully.
6. Delete c:users. Command line should be: rmdir /s /q c:users
7. Delete c:documents and settings. Command line should be: rmdir "c:documents and settings"
8. Create junction to new users directory. Command line should be: mklink /j c:users d:users
9. Create junction for the old "documents and settings". Command line should be: mkdir /j "c:documents and settings" d:users
10. Restart computer.

Note:When in recovery mode the disk drives end up with different drive letters than what the normally have.Consequently my SSD drive which is "C" became "E" and my hard drive which is "D" became "C". Confusing, but I adjusted the above commands to reflect this. All seemed to go well until I rebooted. The computer booted up fine, but when I entered my password to log in windows complained that it could not find my profile. Since I could not log in at all I was forced to re-install windows. Supposedly, this is doable and I NEED to do it asap as my SSD will not hold all the stuff that will eventually be in "users".

Show Processes From All Users, With No Other Users

May 4, 2011

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.

So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.

Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

Windows 7 & Vista Dual Boot Installation - Vista Won't Load?

Sep 13, 2010

New laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I have two business programs that won't run on a 64bit system. Partitioned the hard drive to install Vista Home Premium 32bit to create a dual boot system solely to run these two programs. Can't get Vista to load. Followed tutorial meticulously. All goes fine until the "Vista will boot for the first time" step. After this first boot, the screen returns to the "completing installation" page. However, the process dies here and the progress bar across the bottom of the screen never moves, even after an hour. Reformatted the partition and started over with same results. Multiple attempts always die after the first boot.

Removing Vista From Dual Boot Of Windows 7 And Vista?

Apr 5, 2011

I had recently installed windows 7 on my laptop running windows vista. I did not remove the existing windows vista installation, and thus win 7 was installed in a dual boot combination. Now, i want to remove vista from my laptop and use windows 7 only. The problem is that during installation, win 7 was installed on logical drive and windows vista was on the primary drive. Thus, i cannot delete/format the windows vista partition. Also I cannot transfer the boot drive to the partition containing win 7 because the vista partition is the active one.

Upgrading Vista To Windows 7 Without Installing Vista First?

Mar 23, 2012

I have a legitimate copy of Windows Vista with key codes etc and I have a legitimate upgrade disk for Windows 7. I had Windows 7 installed on a previous system build which had a HD crash and now I am starting again from scratch (wiyh backed up data).

Like a dolt, I installed Wondows 7 before I remembered it was an upgrade edition. I've looked all over the MS site and don't see a method I can use to Activate Windows 7 from this point. way to use my legitimate Windows disks and keys without having to wipe the drive, install Vista and then install Windows 7 yet again.

It's aggravating to have legitimate software and not be able to use it without needing to trick the system - surely there is a way to not have to start all over?
