View 11 RepliesWorking on a fresh install of Windows Ultimate. Got everything in place, programs, etc. Still trying to troubleshoo the built-in webcam problem (not starting up, "Need WIA driver" stuff). I found a driver for it from the manufacturer but right away I noticed it didn't work, the cam didn't work and so I attempted to roll back the driver. I then noticed that generic icons replaced many of the icons in my Start menu and task bar. I decided to do a system restore back to the point before I tried the new driver. No dice. Same problem exists. Then I went searching the forums for some ideas, many of which include deleting and rebuilding the icon cache, making the cache bigger, cleaning the dead entries from the registry, etc. I tried manually fixing the icon (replacing them) but the "change icon" command returns "cannot find" icon file. I went to look in the Windows/Installer folder and there is NOTHING in there except for a $PatchCache$ folder. The shortcuts for the generic icons do lanch their applications properly, fortunately. I've tried a lot of stuff, but nothing seems to work. This is so annoying. I put a lot of work into rebuiliding this system and I don't want to have to rebuild it all over again. All because of a stupid, lousy little web cam driver!

Well I've got a nasty infection on my Dell XPS Studio, and at this point think that the easiest thing would be to do a clean install. Dell's Windows 7 installation is quite bloated, what I'd really like to do is install from my generic Windows 7 Upgrade disc, downloaded from the Microsoft Store and previously installed on my XPS 410. I do have Dell's disk for installing their required drivers, etc.

I was a frequent user of the OS - Windows XP and my driver worked fine, I could play many low quality and few high quality games. But I tend to get infected when I was on XP. So I switched to a new OS - Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601) it automatically installed a the current driver I have as of now. When I try to play games on it, they will not work. When I try to play the Windows 7 Card game it lags terribly. I have done things such as the Windows Experience Index, Updating my driver via device manager, dxdiag, and several blogs and help sites. If possible can anyone help me or reccommend drivers that are compatible with my current OS and is substantially better than the piece of crap driver I have now?

The videos opened up in Windows Media Player, apparently.
Played Ok.
But now, when I click on other Desktop icons having absolutely nothing to do with pix or video, Windows Media Center opens up. It's as if it has taken over my PC. Also, all my icons on the bottom left of my screen (the Start Menu I think it is called ?) now have generic icons. Also a bunch on my Desktop, but not all. Clicking on any of these also opens up the Windows Media Center. How do I get my normal looking icons to show again correctly, and operate correctly?
A few months ago after a hard-drive meltdown I purchased a new Hewlett-Packard computer, with Windows 7 HP (64 bit) as the operating system. The tech who installed the computer said I should be fine to back-up to my Phillips 1 GB external hard-drive using the back-up facility provided with Windows 7 HP. I have made a few attempts to do so, all unsuccessful so far. Each time I get a fairly vague 'generic' error message (0x81000001), which does not really provide specific information:

Windows back-up encountered an internal error. Please review your settings and re-try the operation (It then gives the options of re-trying the back-up or changing the settings). I soon realised after my first failed attempt that my hard-disk space precluded me from backing up a system image, so I configured the back-up facility not to include one- but still the back-ups failed. My hard disk drives are thus:
(C) OS: 207 GB free of 919 GB
(D) HP- Recovery (1.45 GB free of 11.9 GB)
(G)'Elements' external HD- 1.20 MB of 298 GB (Basically this is an old back-up of my C Drive to an External HD, the capacity of which soon made it woefully inadequate for my back-up needs!)
(I) Phillips 1 TB external hard drive (921 GB free of 931 GB)
I have recently finished building my computer and brought a copy of windows 7 (home premium) 64bit to go with it. But when I try to install I never get past "collecting information" where I am being asked to "Select A Driver To Install" as a driver for my "DVD Device" is missing (apparently). I assumed that the driver I needed would be on my motherboard driver disk. I clicked the disk and told it to "rescan" and it only said "There's no device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers". When I navigate directly to the sata,raid & ide drivers sometimes I get a: nVidia nForce Serial ATA Controller on the screen but when I click on that it says the same thing after about 10 seconds or tells me it cannot install and I need to get a new driver from my distributor (I have tried the drivers of the Asus website but the same result). What do I do?

AMD Phemon X4 965 @ 3.4ghz (black edition)
2gb RAM
250gb HD (sata)
DVD-ROM (IDE)
Note: it's brand new and doesn't have an existing windows installation.
I have a HPE-500f pc hooked up to my vizio V551XVT and all that comes up is generic pnp monitor, is that the correct setting and if not how do I change it
