"The Boot Configuration Data Store Could Not Be Opened. The System Cannot Find The File Specified"

Dec 5, 2010

I was messing around with the partition editor in Fedora 14 and accidentally changed the file type on the boot partition. When I go through the startup repair and do the command prompt method, when I enter bcdedit I get the message "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified"When I do bootrec.exe /fixboot it give me this. "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded an that the volume is not corrupted" /fixmbr says that it completes successfully btw.

Run From Solid State Store On Mech Drive?

Dec 28, 2011

I am going to build a system (actually many of them) I would like to have two drives in this system. one a very fast reasonably large (100 gig) plus VERY fast solid state hard drive and the other a very fast and very large (10 or 2 Teri) mechanical drive. My question is how do I setup the prefetch or cache or whatever to run the operating system and my recent history of programs off of the solid state and have the mechanical drive there with everything on it in case I choose to something new into the recent history list by running some program once. also have oldest bumped off solid state, when space becomes an issue, but still keep it on mechanical hard drive. I think that this system will appear to run faster except the first time you run a program. I think this would be useful for instance on a system that plays the same online game everyday. Or works with the same complicated drawing in auto-cad for weeks. I have my own ideas about how to do this, but I thought I might throw this out there to what it sounds like when it hits the wall.

Will the notebook handle the external drive properly?

Moving Boot Data To Data Drive

Aug 18, 2012

So I've been using my 64GB ssd as my windows 7 boot drive and i have a 1TB hdd as my data drive. Recently the my computer has begun to freeze up with errors like "explorer.exe" has stopped responding or "windows" has stopped responding and half of the time when i try to boot it says it cant find windows. This has lead me to believe that my ssd is dying despite being only a year old. I need to RMA my ssd but to do that i would be losing my boot drive for weeks. So I thought id try to create a system image so that i can simply put my boot drive on my hdd, but when i try to create the image it says that the image would be 711GB because its including all of my hdd (which contains all my user libraries and downloads). My question is: how do I make windows stop thinking that my hdd is a system drive so that I can create a reasonably sized image, or more generally: how can i easily move my boot drive to my hdd? Also, I've read some posts about using "easyBCD" to accomplish the latter but I'm not sure that's exactly what i need in this situation.

Storing Data On Data Drive?

forum i have a question. I have a kingston 30 gb ssd i use as my windows drive, and a 750 gb wd hdd for data/game storage. I have heard that you can ghost a file on the data drive into the x86 folder so that all new installs go there and then you still recieve most of the benefits of your ssd w/o clogging it up. I have an amd based system (dont know if that matters or not)

Windows Backup To Drive With Data Already On It?

Aug 14, 2012

Got a new PC (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) with a 1TB drive. I added an extra internal drive which happens to be one of my old 300GB XP drives (231GB free). There are some apps on the old drive (Photoshop 6.0) which still run & I'd like to use them. Can I run Windows Backup and create an image on the old drive even though there are 70GB's of apps & files on there already?? Does the backup wizard partition or format the selected drive in the process of backing up? Obviously I'd like to keep accessing that stuff if I can.

Transferring Windows 7 And Data On C: Drive From HDD To SSD?

Apr 20, 2011

so i did a little research, and from my knowledge you can't simply transfer over a copy of an OS to a new (parimary) to an SSD due to partition alignment being off and screwing stuff uphowever, i found this:Use Windows 7's built in System Image tool and create a backup of your Windows 7 install to an external hard disk. Install new new hard drive (69 GB), boot from your Windows 7 DVD and choose to restore a system image and point to the location where the System Image is backed up. To do this procedure successfully, you will need an external backup drive to back up the installation.

How To Make Windows 7 Ignore Bad Data Drive At Startup

Mar 9, 2012

I have my pc configured for music production. I have multiple drives installed (6 in total). The issue is this : the boot drive where windows 7 is installed is OK , but windows boot process freezes at the startup logo screen and does not go past this stage. After investigation I found out that when one of the other drives is faulty. Windows does not boot. If you disconnect the faulty drive .. then windows BOOTS normally.
No message is displayed during the windows startup phase. Is there a way to configure windows such that It ignores the bad drive at startup. It seems that windows waits for the drive indefinitely and jams there not timing up after some time.

Reinstalling Windows 7 And Ownership Of User Data On Different Drive

Oct 24, 2012

I keep all my data on a separate drive. The last time I re-installed windows 7 I had to take ownership of all my data even though the user name on the old install and then new install was the same. After reading the forums I understood that the SID for my user name was different between the old and new installations.

So my questions are

1) Is there anyway to assign the old user SID to the user created in the newly reinstalled OS so that I don't have to take ownership for a huge number of files/folders recursively?

2) If there is no way to assign the SID how do people store their data to allow for easy reinstall of the OS/Migration to a different computer?

Windows Component Store Corrupt - Error 800737

Oct 27, 2012

Windows 7 update is stuck at last check for updates on 25th June on this laptop belonging to a friend. Tried running the System Update Readiness Tool but the Hotfix for Windows KB947821 it wants to install first always fails, and you can't say no to this or it says process aborted by user. Some other sites discuss copying files from another PC, which I don't have as I have a Mac. Also registry editing. Is there any way to fix this without doing either?Win 7 SP1 isn't installed. Tried downloading it (as Win Update won't find it) but it won't run - the same 800737 error and advises downloading the SURT as above. The error again is Windows component store corrupt.Win Update constantly wants to install 3 important updates, suspiciously all the same minute size of only 15kb - KB2676562, 2679255 and 2709715 from April, May and June 2012. These appear to install ok and go into the update history, but then show again and again as needing to be installed - clearly all related to the corrupt component store.
