I've been looking to see if there's a button, setting, feature, etc, to search files by content ONLY. I found in Folder Options the radio button to include content in searches. But that's too broad.

I really enjoyed my time with XP especially because of the layout and I knew I would lose certain features like the way I could so easily search for files like mp3's and videos through my external hard drives. I do extensive film editing professionally, although im a bit disorganized as I am currently using two external hard drives and I am looking for some recordings I made from August 2011 but its difficult to find them because I don't have the same search features that Windows XP had compared to Windows 7. look for files through date ranges, type of file be it an image, audio, movie, or text document, and size all at the same time?

View 9 Replies View Relatedi'm running my Windows 7 on a SSD and i've done the optimized settins what i've read over the internet. I also use the Windows Classic theme, where i see the statusbar etc.My problem is when i open My computer and then go to some drive(non-SSD) it opens the drive but doesn't show the files/or shows the files but still they're not sorted correctly, untill it is done with the "Searching for items."(which is written on the statusbar at the bottom.This can take a few seconds to what seems like a minute, probably only though a good 30-40seconds.I wouldn't have a problem with this if it only did this once, but it does this "Searching for items." pretty much all the time when i go to a drives(non-SSD) root. Notice the root of the drive, when i go to some subfolders on the drive it doesn't "Search for items" and shows the files on the folder instantly, but when i then click back to the root of the drive it starts the "Searching for items." all over again. I had couple of thoughts of why this is happening, first i thought it would be because i had disabled the pagefile due to my SSD; now i've added the pagefile on my SSD and the problem is still there.The second thing which i thought of was the Indexing of the drives, i've disabled the Indexing on my SSD but i've left it on for every other drives. I don't know if there's a possibility that the indexing on the other drives may be off even though when i click on the drive and choose properties, i can see that the Allow indexing is chosen.

I have installed WINDOWS 7 (Lisenced) in HP-Laptop. After that i can install all drivers. Then i can use all USB drivers. I am using 3 USB regularly. Then I installed VMware 7. Now I cant use all USB drivers except 3 drivers. While connecting, It scanning "Searching Windows Update" then it shows the error "No driver found".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having issues with searching for program shortcuts in Windows 7. When I type in a shortcut name in the search field on the start menu, nothing appears. Files and Control panel applets do appear though but no program shortcuts located under the C:ProgramdataMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu folder. The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise RTM 64 bit. I have confirmed that the user that is having the issue does have read and execute rights to these shortcuts because they appear in the start menu and in the appropriate folder. This is in a corporate environment so the local hard disk has restricted settings on it via group policy.
They include the following:
- Hide these specified drives in My Computer Restrict C drive Only
- Prevent access to drives from My Computer Restrict C Drive Only.
The tasks I have done.
- Confirmed the index options settings and the start menu is listed.
- Rebuilt the index and the same issue applies
Sometimes on my many windows 7 pcs when I go to computer or network nothing shows up and the side has the endless magnifying glasses searching, I can still access a network or drive by typing in the location or drive letter, logging out sometimes fixes this, but mainly have to restart the pc? This a windows 7 bug?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn windows XP I remember I could specify whatever I remember of a file and I could get straight to the file I was looking for, I could only remember a range of dates, an approx size, tow or three file extension... and thats it.. the search in windows 7 is good, but only for looking files that you know are there and you just want to save time scrolling down until get it. I have been in this situation various times, but I cant stand it anymore
I am looking for an audio file (a recording of a conversation). I don't remember the name (probably the default name the recorder put on it [there fore must be hundreds of files with the same names but in different folders). The specs I remember from the file, or what I am sure it is are:
Size between 1mb and 20mb
Create and or modification date: between 2008 and 2010
File type: wav, mp3, qcp or amr (i don't remember if i convert it, if i edited it... )
In windows xp I would have found the file, but in this windows 7 something CANT be so simple and when it is forced to be, it doesn't work properly. When I try to use the "So Super duper" simple all mighty space for searches in the upper right corner... it only give me options for (despite the name itself ...) "modified date" and "size". How do I chose a range of date, a range of size various fiile type? Why its so complicated in windows 7?
There is a Windows 7 machine and a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine in the same network. The Windows Search service is running on Server 2008 R2 and on Windows 7, therefore their music folders are indexed and added to the Music library. On Windows 7, I can search an artist in the start menu search and songs come up corresponding to the artist I searched for. However in Server 2008 R2 when I search an artist no results show unless that artist is in the file name of the song.Does anyone know what Windows 7 Search Service is doing that Server 2008 R2 is not? Perhaps something else is missing in Server 2008? Ironically, if Windows 7 was sharing its indexed music folder and Server 2008 R2 added the shared folder to its music library, it will find artists I search for in Server 2008 R2.

I work on a roaming profile environment (Windows 2008 R2). This is the issue: I recently moved (cut/paste) several folders from C: to the desktop, so their content could be saved as part of my profile (not a big deal, regular stuff). Had to restart my device (no errors involved) and after logging back I got a surprise: all the content from one of the folders in question is missing!
Just to be more specific, this is exactly what I did: select, cut and paste no more than 5 folders; just recalled that the one missing the content was renamed before restarting (all the content was still there before this point).
I know important things should NEVER be located in the desktop (my fault, sorry!), but have anyone seen this case before?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 home premium 32bit on a pretty fast AMD phenom II x4 with 4gb ram. The problem I ahve is with windows explorer. When I click on a drive, it takes about 5 seconds before it will show me the folders. Then when I click on a folder, I have to wait as a little hourglass-type slider goes across the top of the screen before it will show the contents. This can take anywhere from 2-15 seconds. I don't remember any other windows OS doing this.Is there something I can change to help speed this up? Not sure that it matters, but I checked defrag and most of my drives are less than 5% fragmented - the most being 15%.

Couple of quick questions: 1. In the search results window, I RMB a file and select "open in new window". the new window address bar does not contain a path. It contains some search info. How do I open in a new window and have the path in the address bar?
2. It appears the search does not limit itself to file names. It is also searching for contents. How do I prevent it from searching contents.
Some time ago, I stumbled upon a piece of software that could automatically log in at start-up, and then log the computer. The purpose of this piece of software is to allow the computer to start up and load the different progresses while the computer is locked. But if you're like me, and you are an admin who is using zipping to archive up logs, but then must occasionally go back and search within those logs for text strings, the Windows Search function does not help you.

Simply download and install WinRAR, and then follow the instructions found in that link to search within (even nested zips) for text strings in order to find the correct file you are looking for to open.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my husbands computer from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. Did a full backup under Vista to an external drive, and also used Easy Transfer. Wanted to do a clean install and format the hard drive due to past computer problems. All went fine until I used easy transfer to put the ''old''files back onto the computer after the new Win 7 install. I'm getting a ''protected content migration'' error,asking for a password. My husband did not have a password on the old user account,but just to be sure we have tried every password that we have used. No luck with any of them. How do I know what it is that we no longer have access to? Is there anyway for me to recover access to these files that are supposedly password protected? Should I do anything as drastic as just doing a full restore back to Windows Vista from the backup copy and change anything and then start over?

In Windows 7 running WMP 12, I cannot for the life of me get network shares in my Windows Media Library to share with my other computers on my network. My Desktop pc died and I was well backed up but now I need to find some stuff in one of the drives. Windows support is useless. Give it more than one word and it is lost most of the time. When desktop comes up I am limited to all programs on the c drive of where to search. When I go to computer and select an external drive of course the search option disappears. I detest the standard layout as it is so different from all the other systems which were easy to use.
