View 4 RepliesI recently re-formatted my hard drive, and noticed an icon in the task bar called "windows host process (Rundll32)". I looked it up and it said it could be malicious. I'm not sure if it is or not, but I ran Malwarebytes and nothing came up.

-ive run memtest86, no errors.
-ive scanned the whole system with 4 different virus programs, so not a virus.
-but ive noticed that rundll32.exe has been using ALOT and i mean ALOT of resources. After a couple hours, norton tells me that it has high disk and cpu usage. i checked core temp and voila, 100% on all 4 amd phenom 955 cores. I dont get it.

I've also found the startup thing on msconfig that may have something to do with it: CTMasterOnOffMonitor
So, every time I boot up and login to my laptop it says that the "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working."
Is there a way to fix this?[CODE]

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 32 bit on my laptop and Windows 7 64 bit on the desktop, both Home Premium. Every time I go online with the desktop it starts a download according to NetLimiter. The download appears as Host process for Windows services and it expands to process 720 and then to 92.122.126.243:80. I use 3G mobile broadband for my net access and this download could use a considerable amount of my Gb allowance. Using NetLimiter I can kill the download but I would like to know what is happening and do I need the download? Some idea of the d/l size would be handy as well. None of this happens when I log on using the laptop.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTo keep my computer running quick, I usually skim through my processes at boot up and see what can be trimmed off from the starting processes, or just from my computer. Host Process for Windows Services shows up twice on the list. Right now at 125,080k and 75,476k memory. I don't recognize these processes or why they are using so much processing. Any advice for tuning those down or speeding up my PC in general (it automatically runs defrag, disc cleanup, standard accessories, etc. once a week).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am getting this error all the time with Windows 7. I open a text file I want to edit, then go to save my changes and I get this error:"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".I have full admin rights, running Win7 Ultimate x64 SP1. From a bit of research I have seen where many others have been experiencing this problem or something similar too. The only "fix" (that doesn't work all the time) is to close explorer.exe and then restart it to "release the handle"? Anyway, this is not acceptable for all the money and time I spent upgrading/configuring this new OS from XP -where I never had this problem- and seriously cuts down my productivity.Has Microsoft even acknowledged this as a bug yet? I can duplicate this scenario the second or third time I try to edit/save/delete a text file and I know that explorer.exe is the problem or a big part of it in any case. I don't want to go back to XP x64 but having to deal with this headache 10-20 times a day is just too much to ask.The file here is a game's map script & has to be saved to a .pk3 and then loaded into the program's root before it can run so i know othing else is running the file. No apps running in taskmngr either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI always check my processes from time to time and today I noticed that rundll32.exe appears to be running non-stop, which I don't remember it doing before. It's not really using any resources, but with me being paranoid, I'm really scared :/ Checked it with process explorer, this is what it yields:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've seen this happen for quite a while. For some games, I'll see rundll32.exe take some CPU, and it can take as long as a half minute for the game to finally run. If I kill rundll32.exe then the game .exe gets killed too.
View 1 Replies View RelatedNew dell n7110/win7sp1x64.At startup on new machine from dell, process explorer (procexp64.exe) lists 81 processes running (seems like way too many - compared to xp with maybe 25 at startup). But which processes I can turn off is a question for another day. OK, read carefully, at least 15 processes in PE show " Path: error opening process". PID, CPU, Private Bytes, and working set columns are shown for these "problem" processes, but nothing after that, ie, description, company name etc. For all other listed running processes (with known paths), all info is shown in all columns. The problem processes include some important ones, services, crss, ism, wininit, winlogon, that must to be working for the computer to work, and everything seems to be working properly, and no cpu spikes or other weird stuff is happening. Right clicking properties on these problem processes, properties window pops up as normal, but shows "version: n/a, build: n/a, path: error opening process, no command line, no current directory, autostart location: n/a, Parent: non existent process (708), user: access denied. Again, this info can not be correct since the computer is working. And then, after a few minutes, another window pops up and says PE has stopped working, and closes the program. Now, if this was the whole story, I would go to sysinternals with this, but read on... Task manager running simultaneously with PE lists 83 processes running, more processes than PE, and also ~5 different processes than PE, and PE lists some processes running that TM doesn't list. So PE and TM show different running processes at the same time. How can that be? For the processes that PE shows "error opening", e.g., crss, etc., when I click properties in TM for the same process, sometimes I get the usual/normal pop-up window listing the path, and all the other data as normal, suggesting the process is working properly. But sometimes when I click properties in TM for the processes that PE shows "error opening", I get no pop-up at all, nothing for that process. So, IMO, it's not just a PE glitch, something is actually wrong here. This is a new machine, with PE the only 3rd party installation. I have installed several dell driver updates, but this problem occurred before I installed them. Also, remember PE and TM simultaneously list some different running processes and TM also fails to show paths, etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 along with IE9. I have found that a problem exists for both the 32-bit as well as the 64-bit version of IE9. I find that for the 32-bit IE9 there are 2 "iexplore.exe *32" files running when the program is started. With the 64-bit version of IE9 there are 2 "iexplore.exe" files running but that's not the problem.
I have found that when I have checked the box "Delete browser history on exit" (Tools - Internet Options - General tab - Browsing History) this sets off the problem on IE9 exit. Both of the iexplore.exe disappear but 2 new files rundll32.exe (*32 for the 32 bit version) appear. These 2 new files run for several minutes at 100% cpu and each will have up to 680Mb of memory. If I go back and uncheck the "Delete browser history on exit" these files, rundll32.exe do not appear and the problem goes away.
It appears the problem is with "Delete browser history on exit" function. I've been using IE9 since it came out and never had my computer, which is now freezing while the rundll32.exe are running, happen before. Ran Malwarerbyts, Super anti-spyware, Spybot, MS Essentials, Advanced system care (Just the Malware finder), Argente utilities (Just the Malware finder), System Mechanic (Just the Malware finder) in safe mode and nothing. I also am not using registry cleaners.
I am trying to set up a VPN on my Desktop computer (HOST) so that I can connect to it from my school with my laptop (CLIENT). At one point it was working, but now every time I try to connect I get "Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection."I know the issue is NOT my laptop, because I can connect to another VPN that I currently have running in place of the one at home (One obvious reason I'd like the home VPN is that my current one is in Sweden...)I also have little reason to believe that my network settings are wrong, because I have the Host computer set as DMZ on my Linksys WRT160N Router and have forwarded the PPTP Port to it as well (Just in case.)I've gone as far as reformatting my Desktop computer and doing NOTHING but installing Network Adapter drivers and an antivirus, and then setting up the VPN and it STILL doesn't work...
