Host A VPN Server On Windows 7?
Dec 7, 2011I need something that can host a VPN server on Windows 7. Not LogMeIn Hamachi or the one hidden in Windows' network connections, neither of those work. I'm looking for a free program.

Windows 7 Clients Intermittently Unable To Resolve Host Name Of Server
Feb 20, 2012We have 2 x Server 2008 R2 domain controllers and 120+ Windows 7 x64 clients. We have a print server which runs Server 2008 R2.We have several other servers which also run Server 2008 R2. An issue occurs intermittently and apparently at random, whereby a client will be unable to resolve the host/computer name of the print server. When the issue occurs, we have confirmed the following: - The client has a valid IP address.The client DNS server addresses are correct. - The client can ping the IP address of the print server. - The client can resolve the IP address of the print server by using nslookup and the server�s FQDN. - The client cannot resolve the IP address of the print server by using nslookup and the host/computer name of the print server.The issue can occur regardless of which domain controller the client used to log on. - When the output of ipconfig /display is printed to a text file, many of the other servers in our domain are present in the DNS cache but the print server is not. After the ipconfig /flushdns command is executed, the client can resolve the host/computer name of the print server immediately.

Oct 16, 2009Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.

At one point it was working, but now every time I try to connect I get "Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established. Feb 12, 2011I have Windows 7 32 bit on my laptop and Windows 7 64 bit on the desktop, both Home Premium. Every time I go online with the desktop it starts a download according to NetLimiter. The download appears as Host process for Windows services and it expands to process 720 and then to 92.122.126.243:80. I use 3G mobile broadband for my net access and this download could use a considerable amount of my Gb allowance. Using NetLimiter I can kill the download but I would like to know what is happening and do I need the download? Some idea of the d/l size would be handy as well. None of this happens when I log on using the laptop.

Jan 4, 2012i have a computer that was running fine for a year or so, but now its been a couple of days and after an hour or two of use, it slows down and finally freezes. I dont know what it is. The clues i have include:
-ive run memtest86, no errors.
-ive scanned the whole system with 4 different virus programs, so not a virus.
-but ive noticed that rundll32.exe has been using ALOT and i mean ALOT of resources. After a couple hours, norton tells me that it has high disk and cpu usage. i checked core temp and voila, 100% on all 4 amd phenom 955 cores. I dont get it.

Jun 13, 2012To keep my computer running quick, I usually skim through my processes at boot up and see what can be trimmed off from the starting processes, or just from my computer. Host Process for Windows Services shows up twice on the list. Right now at 125,080k and 75,476k memory. I don't recognize these processes or why they are using so much processing. Any advice for tuning those down or speeding up my PC in general (it automatically runs defrag, disc cleanup, standard accessories, etc. once a week).

Jul 28, 2011I have an XP virtual machine running on a 64-bit Win 7 host. I have a home wireless network that I need to access from the XP VM in order to use printers attached to the other computers on the network. All computers currently on the network have the same workgroup name. I have networking on the VM set to use the wireless adapter on the host laptop. With this configuration I can see and access the host, but I cannot see nor access any other computers on the network.
Now, it seems to me that I will need to run the XP Network Wizard to set up the network on the VM before I am able to see the network, but after reading dozens of articles and posts on networking a VM, I have never seen this step mentioned. (I am at work now, so I can't test this out on my network until later.) So, my questions are:
(1) Do I need to run the XP Network wizard to get the VM to join the wireless network, and
(2) if I don't need to run the wizard, what DO I need to do to get this to work?

Apr 25, 2012I was applying the some updates to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and the update process failed. I shut down the computer and when it rebooted, the computer reported my Internet connection was down. My computer is still getting an IP address and DNS settings from the router. I can ping 127.0.0.1 but as soon as I try to ping my router I get the destination host net unreachable message
- I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling IPv4 (netsh int IP reset C: esetlog.txt & netsh Winsock reset (both as administrator))
- I have tried uninstalling .NET since that is one of the upgrades that failed.
- I have tried re-running Windows Update to see if the updates which had downloaded would install (failed)
Windows troubleshooter is worthless as it keeps suggesting the network cable is unplugged or broken.

The problem is that despite having set up Remote Desktop on the client to 'Play on this Computer', no audio plays. When I click on the volume control, there is no slider and instead the message 'no audio device is installed' is displayed. If I choose to leave sound at my desktop, then it functions as expected.
