Windows 7 Starter Factory Restore Fail
Aug 23, 2011
I have an Acer Aspireone D255E Netbook, with Windows 7 Starter. I decided I wanted to restore the computer to factory default, and keep my User files. It ran all the way through until it said "Setup is starting services" then it said "Windows can not install this software to this hardware." This confuses me because it was working all the time, I never updated any hardware. So it gave me an option to restart the system and I do so. Then if I do nothing, it just continues looping to the "setup is starting services" screen and then the reboot. I tried pressing F8 to run system restore again, and get it back to factory default, but system recovery is not an option anymore. I tried loading in safe mode, and it wont load. I tried other options on the F8 boot menu and it all basically said to restart. This netbook doesn't have a cd or dvd drive. I do not have any flash drives. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could restore to factory default without purchasing a new dvd, cdrom, or flash drive? Or perhaps an alternate way to load DOS so I could delete whatever step its at on the installation so it could put the "Repair windows" option so I could run the factory restore?

I'm on my first and new laptop, still on week one. Permissions were being stolen by the OS and making programs irrelevant. This seems to be a breaking problem in the General Forum this week with many users coming in with symptoms of that.So I made a recovery USB stick, downloaded an .iso from Digital River, and am currently trying to do a factory restore. My first try I pressed F11 to get the choices and I didn't unplug my mouse against directions and my screen stayed black but on during the supposed reset, I got impatient and rebooted with the Power button and it said something about couldn't find BOOTMNG.exe. So I hit F9 on startup and got to another chance to reset to factory, but used my USB stick, which worked AFAIK, but since, my screen is still black but on instead of seeing any sign of activity for the past 25 minutes.

System restore failed to extract the file. from the restore point. There was a disk failure during the restore. This might be caused by bad sectors on the disk. I get the same message, but with a different file name, with every restore point I try, and I have now tried all seven available restore points, going back to 30 Dec 2011. The computer was working perfectly until 3 days ago when it blue screened, and has not started properly since. It is a Corei5 with 4 GB RAM and is only 12 months old. I just dont believe the drive has that many bad sectors.

My daughter had received a Dell Inspiron mini with Windows 7 starter preloaded. At some point it started crashing when attempting to connnect to our network (in home) to get on internet. I also noticed it would not run windows updates. After some research discovered possible virus. I did run several spyware, malware programs and was able to remove fake trojans. Everything seemed to be going well until I rebooted. The system now boots to system recovery options. Knowing there is nothing really on the computer to loose, I have tried ever option. When it runs startup repair, it is unable to repair the problem. I have tryed system restore, I picked a point previous to problems start, it said it restored it but it still boots back to system recovery options. I tried the image recover and factory image recovery. If i go to command prompt I even started the setup.exe and was going to reinstall but it says it needs some drivers and for me to insert dvd/cd. I dont have one since it came preinstalled, or at least I have never seen one with this machine. I can view in dos prompt everything on the machine. Every time I reboot it goes back in to repair cycle with no repair.

I was having issues with my optical drive and foolishly followed the advice of Emachines tech support. I performed a system restore to original factory settings that was supposed to move my user files to cbackup. It all failed. My computer now gets stuck on "Windows is loading setup files" or something, and the. I get a dialogue box saying installation failed and would continue after restart.I have tried using a system recovery disc, and get the same issues. I have tried to get it to boot in safe mode, last known good, and get the same error and restart cycle. Memory tests show no issues and I am at my last wit because there were important documents and photos I can't ever get back. I do have a backup drive but it was a few hundred gigs too small, and so I couldn't backup everything I need

I need to restore my laptop back to it's factory settings. I've looked at guides on the net and gone through the control panel to the system recovery < advanced recovery methods however the options that I see in the guides and on my laptop presently differ.
Before it had an option to "return your computer to factory condition" however now it says "Re-install windows)
So how can I restore it to factory settings? E: Laptop is a Dell Inspiron1545. OS is Windows 7 Home

I have forgotten my windows 7 logon password and have been told that the only way I can solve this problem is to restore my laptop to factory settings. I have been told by TechGuys that this is not possible with Windows 7 and that I have to pay around £80 to have HP do it for me.

I am currently running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I encountered a problem today with scanning using the printer (Printing was alright). I can only remember vaguely as I thought it some kind of connection error, I was using a USB cable and it was working find earlier. Spent hours googling to no avail, so I decided to use System Restore to restore to yesterday where it was working perfectly. So when the laptop started the process through -Control Panel> Recovery> Open system restore it logged out and everything, but hung at initializing for about 40 minutes, I googled that with another laptop and 99% of them said I should turn on my laptop with the button, then try the System Restore in the boot options when choosing the Repair Computer option. Guess what! That also didn't work. Well I started windows normally after the second power off, turned on without any problems, but then realized in the taskbar it shows the Ethernet wire connection for internet where I am connected wirelessly, I check my network adapters through Network & Sharing centre and the adapters are missing. I start panicking and instantly check device manager, its blank (Plug and Play is on). At that point I'm pissed off when I remember that when I started the laptop again, ATI gave me a message that no drivers were found. Have all my drivers been deleted? If my network adapters are missing, how am I connecting to the net? I also checked msconfig, tried a clean boot (Hopeless), but also noticed many Microsoft services are stopped. I just tried to scan again now to get an error message but the printer was not found, I figured this was from deleted devices?

Yesterday morning I started my laptop and it was frozen at the Acer screen. After I restarted a few times I called acer tech support. Via remote access the tech support agent was able to see that, even though I have McAfee installed, my computer had trojans and a lot of files had been affected. He told me he could fix it but it would cost $200 which I can't afford right now. So I ordered the windows 7 reinstall disc and hung up. I decided to try doing a system resore back to factory settings. I began the restore and had no problems. Then when the computer went to automaticaly restart it continued to remain stuck on the acer load screen but I found that if I left it alone for about 45 minutes it would automatically restart and continue with the restore process, adding files and whatnot. My newest problem is that the restore is stuck. It started loading Office 2010 and has been doing it for 12 hours now.

I have a Dell system studio slim desktop, I used the "reinstallation DVD, windows 7 home premium 64-bit" disk to reinstall. After the reinstallation, when it automatically reboots, the screen starts up where I can press F2 or F12 for boot options but after that and windows logo, it stays on a black screen.
For a little background history, the desktop had a power supply die and I bought and added a new PSU. After that it worked until viruses on my computer forced me to reinstall windows.

Performed system restore to factory point when I first recieved the computer. When windows starts, it states that it is rpeparing the system for first time use, however it will get to the welcome screen and prompt for a user name and passwordSystem restore never asked for a user name and password. I tried using the account information from when I setup the computer originally but it does not recognize the username. Also tried to type in administrator for the user name and it says the account has been disabledI have tried to setup user through the command prompt and through the registry using the windows recovery disk. When all this failed I contacted Dell and they said I disabled the admin account during restore (I would like to know how) and I would need the windows installation disk which were not included.
