Win 7 Complete Upgrade From Pre Installed Vista

Aug 31, 2009

i have done a complete upgrade to windows 7 from a preinstalled vista. The vista came with my laptop and it had a recovery backup drive on my hard drive. I did create recovery disks but i don't think they are working correctly as when i put them in on a boot up it says windows is loading files but stops half way.

So my question is, if i ever need or want to go back to my preinstalled vista could i and how would i perform this step. I still have my recovery partition and i have not messed with that. But i cannot see my recovery partition in windows 7 but i know its there as the memory is not available.

Upgrade Vista 32 (pre-installed) To Win7 64bit

Jan 12, 2010

I bought my laptop about a year ago with Vista 32-bit pre-installed even though it is capable of running 64-bit, and now I'm looking to upgrade to Win7 and would like to make use of it's 64-bit capabilities. Is there any easy way of going about this? Since I got the computer with it pre-installed, it did not come with the 32/64-bit installation CDs for Vista. I can buy the Win7 64-bit upgrade CD from my campus store with my student discount, so I was hoping there would be a way for me to do this easily.

Upgrade Path Problem - Win 7 RC To Vista To Win7 Upgrade

Nov 13, 2009

I installed Win 7 RC on a new build and purchased Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM with upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. The Win 7 upgrade disc has arrived. I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

Windows Live Mail 2011 Installed But Windows Update Not Complete

Oct 25, 2010

I applied a Windows Update the other day without realizing that I was doing a major update from Windows Live Mail to WLM 2011. The installation progress window stopped at about 50% complete and just stayed there. After doing some Googling about the update (KB2434419) I read that behind the progress window is another window which asks the user whether all Windows Live apps are to be installed and updated or just the ones that have already been installed. I had been using only Windows Live Mail, so I chose to update only that application to WLM 2011. The installation appeared to run successfully, and I have been using WLM 2011 for two days. It works fine, although I've had to get familiar with numerous changes to its appearance and user interface.

The Windows Update icon is still at the right end of my taskbar, however, and when I click on it, the progress window is still showing "Installing update 1 of 1" about 50% complete as if it does not realize that the installation of WLM 2011 finished two days ago! The only option in that window is a "Stop installation" button. I am afraid to click that button in case it initiates a rollback of the WLM 2011 installation. Why does Windows Update think that the installation isn't complete? How do I terminate the session of Windows Update and not disturb the WLM 2011 installation that completed two days ago? Do I dare kill the Windows Update process that is running?

Installed Windows Seven, Now Can't Boot To Vista

May 17, 2009

I installed windows seven and it boots up automatically without giving me the option to boot into my old vista partition.

Background:

I am sure this is something simple, but I can't get it working.

I had vista installed and I used partition magic to repartition my hard drive on my laptop.

I made the new partition come before my old partition, because I wanted windows 7 to be my primary eventually.

I think it may have someting to do with making the vista partition active, but I am notentirely sure how to do that.

User Profiles Messed Up - Installed Windows 7 On Top Of Vista

Dec 20, 2010

I had a Vista computer that crashed. It wouldn't start up. Figured I would try to install Windows 7 on top of the Vista installation. I read that a custom installation would save the old contents in and Windows.old folder, including the user profiles. However, after custom installation the windows.old folder is there, but my Vista profile is gone. Probably because it was password protected. I figured I would be able to find it and elevate my privelegies in Win 7, but seems not. It still seems the harddrive is full of my old information(alot of GB's are used). Is there any way to recover the information? I know the old password and all that, just can't find the information. (Also tried to search for exact file and folder names but they cannot be found).

Upgrade From Vista HP 64 To 7 Pro 64

I was to find that I couldn't do an in place upgrade from Vista Home Premium (64-bit) to 7 Professional (64-bit) after I'd already bought Professional. It seems that I can do an in place upgrade to either 7 HP or 7 Ultimate, but they skipped over Pro.

Is there some workaround for this, or failing that some way to reliably back up my applications and data?

I have already either upgraded the incompatible software, or uninstalled it, so I only have compatible software left on my Vista HP64 system.

Where To Buy Upgrade From 64 Bit Vista To 64 Bit Win 7 ?

Upgrade Vista 32-bit To Windows 7 64-bit?

Jul 2, 2009

I must confess from the get-go that my knowledge of the finer points of computers in general is limited, but I've heard that 64-bit is the way to go. I bought my system from Dell about 12 months ago. Since I didn't build it, I can't tell you what mother board I've got (Dell refuses to easily divulge that bit of info and it's kind of a huge problem), but I do know:

Intel Q6600 @ 2.4 GhZ
4 GB DDR2 800
Radeon HD 3870 512 MB
W/ Vista Ultimate 32-bit

can I buy an upgrade kit to go from Vista 32 to Windows 7 64 or will I need to straight buy Windows 7 64 bit and install it? Will I need to update the BIOS? Is casual gaming, photo and video editing and HD video viewing even worth 64-bit? Again, since I don't know what mobo I have, all this may be for nothing because the board may not do 64-bit at all...

Upgrade To Windows 7 From Vista

Dec 24, 2012

I am wanting to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista and do a clean install in the process. I plan to do this using a retail Windows 7 upgrade disk.

The machine is an older Acer Aspire running the 32 bit Vista OS.

My plan is to buy a new HD because I think the existing HD may be flaking out. Of course, the machine has gone through several iterations of software installs and unistalls in its 7 year life span. So, some of the problems being experienced could be related to those circumstances. That's why I want to do a clean OS install and reinstall of programs. Is this plan reasonable? What are the problems I might encounter?

Neither myself or the client is interested in doing something outside a lawful upgrade. Would a retail Win 7 Professional OS be better/easier to get the system running on Win 7 pro? EJ TLARbb has chosen the best answer to his/her question.Click here to view the answer that was selected.

Upgrade From Vista To Windows 7?

Jan 6, 2012

I have a Dell E520 that came with Vista. After a year or two, I had had enough with Vista and bought the Windows7 upgrade. However the upgrade didn't go well and I got on the phone with Microsoft. They walked me through doing a clean install using the upgrade version that I bought. Windows 7 has been and still is working fine. My question has to do with my "Recovery D" drive. I'm assuming that what is on there is a Vista recovery, unless the upgrade changed that drive too(?). Since I never want to go back to Vista, is it OK to use that drive space? How can I make it a recovery drive for Windows 7?

Windows 7 Upgrade From Vista?

Feb 3, 2012

A couple of you know that I was given two laptops to clean off the Win 7 Security 2012. The one is not as bad as the other. Cleaned the HP. The Compaq was her husband's and after he gave it to me to fix, he called and gave me the laptop. I cleaned a virus off it last year, similar to the new one, so I do know how to reinstall Win 7. BUT for some unexplained reason, and probably to my advancing age, lol, I don't remember it going the way this has gone. Anyhow, now I have THREE instances of Win 7 on one partition, I think. At least when I booted up after putting in the product code, it asked me which of three I wanted to start. Is there a way to get rid of all instances of Win 7, leaving just Vista, so I can start over?
