Update Error C004F012 (Windows Could Not Search For New Updates)

Jun 14, 2009

edit (Ian): This thread has been split from an audio drivers topic, as it may be of use to others having C004F012 errors.

When I went to install the x64 drivers, I got a message saying that my Operating System was not compatible, but then it asked me if I wanted to run it under the correct settings, which I did and then it installed. As for the Windows Updates, I tryed to run them and I get "Windows could not search for new updates" and error code C004F012.

Windows Update Error / Not Search Or Update / Install Critical Items

Jan 30, 2011

I'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.

As I open windows update, and check for updates, after a while it gives me an error:

"Windows could not search for new updates. An error occured while checking for updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 80073712."

I have also tried Windows Readiness Tool, it doesn't fix my computer, I still can't check for updates successfully.

Update To Windows Error: Failure To Configuring Windows Updates

Dec 16, 2011

I have Hp Pavillian, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, 64bit system. Everytime Windows downloads Windows updates, it is successfull downloading and installing, however, I then get a message saying: Failure configuring Windows Updates, Reverting Changes, Do Not turn off your computer.

I have gotten Windows Fixit for Windows Updates and installed....but that does not clear up the problem. I have not wanted to use Restore feature of Windows 7, since I have installed many critical programs that I use. Is there any other solution out in Cyberspace that will help resolve the "Failure Configuring Windows Updats".

Windows Could Not Search For New Updates

Aug 17, 2012

Windows 7 - Service pack 1 Problem started 3 days ago. Updates are set to automatically download and install new ones. I keep getting Windows Update error 80073712 and while looking at the installed updates section in Control panel there are "No updates installed on this computer"

I did some reading and I tried some solutions with no luck: 1) Run System Update Readiness tool from Microsoft. 2) Run the System File Checker which could not run giving me a "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" message

I also looked in my Windows/logs/CBS/CBS file and I found several errors with mainly " Failed to get CSI store"

Windows Could Not Search For New Updates

Jul 30, 2012

Today a message came up saying that windows could not check automatically for updates and after clicking it to search manually I got the thread title as an error(error 8008005). (might be related) Some days ago windows tried to install some updates but failed several times. Every time I restarted the PC it said the updates failed to install and then I had to re-download them. I didn't give much attention though, so I'm not sure if they did install after all. So I can't use windows update to search for new updates at the moment.

Windows 7 Update Keeps Installing The Same Updates Over And Over?

May 27, 2012

Windows Update seems to be stuck in and endless cycle of applying the same 5 important updates over and over again. Probably been happening for about 3 months now, and despite going through the install process and following all the instructions to the letter, every time I start up, the same updates are available for download again. Here is a screenshot of Windows Update showing the updates in question

Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates

Aug 18, 2012

It appears to be solved, however Windows Update does not work. I get the message "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." Needless to say, the restarts do not help. I also tried installing Windows Essentials for virus protection which could not receive updates. I have since uninstalled an am using Clamwin for virus protection.

I've installed the updates upon request. It's been two days now and the pop up keeps on coming saying the same two updates available. I checked the update history and the updates were all installed successfully. These updates are actually a few years old and it's odd how they just popped up. The updates were for MS Framerwork KB2600217 and KB2656351

"windows Cannot Find 'search:query=XXX'" Error Message Windows Search

Nov 25, 2010

"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.

The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)

...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).

However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.

If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.

Windows Update Doesn't Install Updates

Dec 19, 2009

I'm having a problem with Windows Update. It's managed to install a few updates, bust most of the updates that it automatically finds fail to install (many important ones too - security updates, etc.). A bit frustrating. For the past couple of days, it tries to install the same two updates every time I turn off the computer. The process takes about 40 minutes. Then it shuts off without an error message. Afterwards, when I turn the computer on again, it doesn't say anything but there are once more two updates that need to be installed - the same ones. It's been quite frustrating. For now, I've got the updates turned off, so it won't try to install them any more, but that's only a workaround and no solution.

I think the problem might be connected with some other installations problems. I've tried to download the updates and install them manually, but it didn't work either; first it said that my virus scanner was interfering (I disconnected from the Internet, deactivated the virus scanner, and tried it again, which got a little bit further but not all the way). At the end I got a kind of dubious error message, which I sadly haven't written down, but it was similar to the ones that I got when I tried to install Microsoft Office and also was unable to get the installation to run through to the end. In both instances, the installation was almost done, after which I got a message that there was a problem with some assembly components, and then it undid the changes. This normally took more than an hour - 30 minutes for the installation to get to the point where it started over, an hour to get it to cancel itself. Haven't found a solution there, and that sucks, because I really need it. I've got a lot of files saved in OneNote format that I can't use and need for work.

The Office error messages led me to a couple of forums where it had worked out because people had updated their .NET framework. I can't do that because .NET is part of the OS framework in Windows 7, apparently. Then I read that some other people had just used Windows Update to update their OS, and then it worked. That's what led me to the discovery that my updates weren't working. I believe that that's got something to do with the problem.I've installed some software, but there's the problem with Windows - I can't install it at all. Not sure what to do here. Windows Update lets me look at the update history. I've found that I get the error code 643 for the two updates that have repeated over the past two days again and again. For the other ones it's a little different; they tried to install once and didn't work. For those, I get following code: 80080005.

Windows 7 Updates Were Failing To Update Fax Component

Jul 14, 2012

for a few days (maybe a week) now I have had trouble with my Canon MX870 Printer/Fax. I have been using it successfully for the past 16 months now, via USB connection, installed on both my Windows 7 laptop and my Windows XP PC (I just unplug it and plug it in to whichever computer I need to print from). For some reason, it has decided not to recognize the drivers on my laptop.I have tried to uninstall and reinstall (no go).I also deleted every instance of MX870 from the registry that it would allow me to (some it wouldn't for some reason no access yes I am Administrator).Reinstall again still no go.The Windows 7 Updates were failing to update the Fax component which I thought was the problem, then all of a sudden it was successful still no printer. Now, it is unsuccessful again.I don't use the Fax component. The reinstall from the CD is successful, but when I plug in the printer, it fails."Device driver software was not successfully installed. Please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed. [code] Also, each time I unplug then plugin the USB cable, it attempts to reinstall the device drivers, the printer successful, the fax failing. It never did this before when I was happily printing away from both computers.

I have no problem printing from the XP machine when it's plugged in there all is good there.I have been to the Canon website and downloaded the latest drivers, which installed perfectly, but again when I plug in the printer, it fails to install the fax driver and the printer won't work..I have also tried all of the various USB ports and ruled that out.I've also run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter also without success. Also, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I can't even print to PDF. My CutePDF program is also not working. I thought this may have been a workaround until I got the printer working again, but no luck.CutePDF will go thought its processes (it's now ticked as default as my Canon is now longer even listed), up till the point where you need to name the file you're creating (that box doesn't appear) all you get to do is print, choose CutePDF, then it disappears no file or if there is, I have no idea where it's gone or what it's called can't find a trace of it.I have not downloaded or installed any other programs (except Windows Updates) in some time that could have caused this. I am at a loss. This is a business computer and printer and is causing much angst.I am running Windows7 (64bit) on an Acer Aspire Laptop (only 16 months old) Firefox 13.0.1.Also running Microsoft Fixit for Printers doesn't even detect the printer and tells me to install one it already is As does the Troubleshooter Does not detect the printer.

Windows Update Keeps Installing Same 2 Updates On Shutdown

May 18, 2010

Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed. It just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer. It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.

Windows 7 Update Can't Find Office 2010 Updates?

Nov 3, 2011

I recently formatted my Dell Inspiron Duo netbook, with Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. I installed all of the software which I run on it without any problems. When I try to update Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus (32bit) Windows Update only finds a few updates, and after they're installed it doesn't find anymore updates. It doesn't even find Office 2010 SP1.{Note: I had no problems with other updates like Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 or other Microsoft updates.I tried uninstalling Office 2010 and installing it again but nothing changed. The privacy settings which show up the first time you run an Office application I set it as "Recommended settings".I also tried downloading Office 2010 SP1 (32bit) and when I tried to run it an error came up saying something like version mismatch (I presume that you need to install other updates before running the setup & I also tried to download an other update but the same error came up.)

Windows Update - Installs Same Updates On Shut Down - 0% Stuck

Sep 6, 2012

Ok over the past week or so windows has been installing the same 3 updates every night! Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit

So I checked to see if they failed and they were installed successfully!

I have ran 3 different MS Fixit things to no avail. I have tried to update the PC manually however it does not go past 0% on installing the updates it just says preparing updates.

I tried adding 2 optional updates to make it 5 and manually clicking update however it sticks on 0% downloading updates.

I am usually pretty good at troubleshooting and fixing PC problems however this one I am defeated! I do not want to restore if possible, will this take away ANY of my files e.g work I have done I have never had to do it before!

Unable To Update Using Windows 7 Update (Code 8000FFFF Error)?

Oct 30, 2012

A while back, after successfully downloading and installing some updates in the Windows Update, it prompted me to restart the computer to finish the update installation process. However, I continued to use the computer for quite some time before restarting it, and then when it tried to configure the updates on the start-up screen, it showed that it was not successful in doing so. In the past, I noticed that this would typically happen when I did not restart the computer immediately (or within a short time) after the updates finished and I got the prompt to restart. I would have to go to Windows Update and do it over again, and then upon immediate restart, it would always work properly. But this time, it did not, and I keep getting the 8000FFFF error message instead.

Also, now, every time I start the computer, it shows that it's "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not shut off computer" (presumably the updates that never got completely and correctly configured) in the start-up screen... gets to 35%..fails... shuts down (screen goes black)... restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, shuts down and restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, and finally it apparently gives up and says "reverting changes" and finally goes to the desktop.I've looked at the answers in several threads at the answers.microsoft.com forum that were started by people with similar problems, and also tried several of the Microsoft "FixIt" files on the Microsoft site, but none of them worked. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Automatically Install ONLY The Updates For Definition Update For Microsoft Security Essentials?

The reason I use this setting is because even though I usually install the updates (because mostly they improve things), sometimes I'll see an update that I know I do not want to install. So I want to have control over which updates get installed. However, I ALWAYS want to install the latest "Definition Update For Microsoft Security Essentials", and since those updates are released very frequently, it's very annoying to always have to install them manually.
