Can't Connect To Public Networks

Oct 11, 2011

I am running an hp g4 notebook with windows 7 64 bit. I can connect to my home network just fine, but I am unable to connect to any public network. The networks show that the connections are available, but when I try to connect I either get a cannot connect error or connected but with no internet error. I have updated the driver for my wireless adapter (Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 wi-fi) and tried resetting the winsock, dv4 and dv6 in ipconfig. No luck with either. The networks show as open.

Public Networks And Home Group

Nov 30, 2009

I am trying to connect to a home group in windows 7; However it says I must set my network to a public network on both computers first. I don't know what I am missing - but I am unable to find where to do this. If anyone can help by providing step by step on how to adjust my home network to 'public' - I am sure it something easy, but I just can't seem to find it.

Windows 7 HP Unidentified Network Is Public?

Jan 24, 2012

I posted a reply on a similar topic but figured I'd start a new thread even though it seems this has been discussed a lot.I have a verizon wireless cell access point I connect a w7hp pc to it and set it as a home network. I also have a nic in the same w7hp box connected to a local 10/100/1g switch with a bunch of other stuff on it, an xp pc, a ps3, a directtv dvr, and a majicjack. That's my home LAN.I'm letting the w7hp machine do the dhcp as part of internet connection sharing which mostly works fine. I had to hard set an ip address for the dvr. There's even a registry entry that you can control the dhcp local subnet. What I'm finding is that with windows 7 home premium even though you can share an internet connection there is no way to change an independent home LAN network to be a "home" location.

Because w7hp decides the home LAN is "unidentified" it won't let you change the type and it's stuck as a "public" network. So none of your home computers can talk to the windows 7 computer. They can use the internet but that's about it.here's a lot of fixes floating around but none seem to correctly fix the problem. It's not a problem if you have w7pro because you can edit the security settings forunidentified networks and let the admin change them. But I can't even find the security registry entries in w7hp.

Why Does Windows Firewall Say Public Networks Connected?

Mar 18, 2011

Why does it say "Connected" next to "Public Networks" in my Windows Firewall page when in fact my computer does not show it is connected to any network at all? Why is Windows Firewall telling me I am connected but all the other relevant notifications in my computer say that I am not connected?

Even when I disable all my network connections and turn off Windows Firewall, the Windows Firewall page still says I am "Connected".

(This is on a brand new computer -- just a few days old -- with Windows 7, 64-bit.)

Unidentified Public Network - Invalid IP Address

Aug 31, 2009

I have been using Windows 7 for about a month now and two days ago i started to have network problems.

I cannot connect to the Internet or my network and keep getting messages saying that the network cable is unplugged when it is not. After a while i was able to get a different message and the computer connects to an unidentified network and when i troubleshoot this it tells me i have an invalid IP address.

I know the problem has got nothing to do with the hardware or my Internet. I have tried 2 other router's & another modem with different Ethernet cables with no luck but my network/Internet is working fine on my laptop which is also Windows 7.

Unidentified Public Network And Internet Connection Lost

Jul 22, 2011

I had problems with my computer not connecting to the network sometimes after restarting my computer. That was usually fixed by simply unplugging and replugging into my outlet. I have a hard wire connection and my ethernet cable gets plugged into the wall and connects to the modem/router (whichever it is) from there. After I reset my computer this morning though, my computer has absolutely refused to connect to the network. I've tried resetting the router/modem and unplugging and replugging in my Ethernet cable. I noticed however in the network center it showed me connected to Network 8 (my standard home connection) for a few seconds but then it changes to unidentified public network and breaks connection to the Internet. Wireless is working fine and I'm infact typing all this on my iPhone 4.

Internet Just Stopped Working, Unidentified Public Network

Jul 17, 2012

I was on my laptop on Friday and the internet would connect when I turned on my laptop. So I just thought I needed to retype the security key. Nope. So after that I reboted my router. (Sorry for my horrible spelling). That didn't work either. So I came here and saw a number of people had the same problem. I tried every thing pluging my laptop into the router, netsh winsock reset, disable and enable the network.

Previously Known Networks Now Unidentified?

Jan 22, 2012

I have a windows 7 laptop that is identifying and connection to my router both wirelessly and through a wired connection, but it won't connect to the internet. I have three other computers and two smart phones that all connect to the network, so it isn't my network. I have a dongle that ususally works, but I have the same problem with that. I have tried other networks with the same problem. My husband and I have tried a variety of common sense type solutions but we are both stumped. I really need that particular laptop for my work which is entirely dependant on an internet connection so I am getting desperate now.

All Networks Unidentified Windows 7

Dec 20, 2012

I turned on my Windows 7 comp yesterday and my wired (into the ADSL wireless router) local area connection is stating its unidentified.

1. Hard Reset the Router and Modem
2. Tried installing new protocols through the adaptor settings.
3. Tried updating the realtek drivers
4. Tried uninstalling the LAN and reinstalling
5. Tried stopping and starting Bonjour.
6. I added a USB wireless dongle and this ALSO says it is an unidentified network.

Windows 7 Pro Wireless Networks 'unidentified'

Aug 17, 2011

My problem is that I work in a school and we have bought 22x Samsung N145 Plus Netbooks. They use Atheros AR9285 wireless cards and I'm having problems connecting them successfully under Windows 7 to my D-Link access point. The fact is that the security has been set to WPA, using AES. The laptops are the same and are connecting, but 9 times out of 10 they pick up an autoconfiguration IP of 169.x.x.x.I sometimes get one working, but never have more than one connect at the same time. I need it to just pick up my 'chads.internal' domain network but it rarely does it successfully. I've tried adding the settings manually, I've tried 3 different network card drivers for WLAN (latest out from the Atheros homepage, second latest as requested to be tried by Samsung tech support, and a version 8.x.x.x driver after reading that 9.x.x.x drivers are 'flaky'), 2 different wireless access points, and the next step that I'm trying is to see if Windows XP will connect!!! I really don't want to have to go down that route!

Network Constantly Changing Between Unidentified Public Network And Home

Aug 30, 2012

Home network with Wifi and ethernet. Using 3x Notebooks and 3x workstations. One of the workstations (W7 ultimate) keeps changing between Public and Home. When this happens, the internet connection dies. I cannot see other workstations either when on public network. Workstation using wifi. Does the same on cable. When it changes to Public, it disconnects from the internet and I cannot get to the router even though it has the workstation has an IP(DHCP or static). Default gateway and subnet is correct. TCP v4 is being used and nothing else is enabled.

Why is this happening?
- I have tried DHCP as well as Static addresses
- Reconfigured NIC(Netgear WG311T), uninstalled and reinstalled it.
- Removed Wifi connection and re-added it.
- Changed auth type, encryption type and keys to connection

Have I covered everything? The only thing different is that I installed a new router - Duo Plus 300wr. It cannot be the router because all the other notebooks connect to it wireless and so does my iPad, Android device and tablet...so it rules that out?

Cannot Turn Off "Public Folder Sharing" For Public Network

Mar 28, 2012

I have two network cards in my PC. One of them connects to the internet while the other connects to my home network.

The issue is enabling public folders for the home network in "Network and Sharing Center" enables public folders for the public network also. In other words Windows grants permission to people on the internet to access my c:usersPublic folder.

Disabling public folders under public network settings disables public folders for the home network also, preventing people on my local area network from accessing my PC.

Also, when it is on public, I have no connectivity but do have when on private. I can't seem to find any setting that will allow me to set it to private and KEEP it. I need to know how to set it for either situation and can't seem to come up with anything so far.

Sysprep Images For Private Distribution?

Aug 10, 2012

I'm finding that I've been installing/reinstalling windows a couple of times a month recently. Either I'm giving a "fresh start" to on of my household's computers or building a new computer for a friend or family member. This not only takes a lot of time but also a lot of bandwidth. Updating windows over and over again is a pain and games are commonly 10-20GB a piece nowadays.

Here's my plan, can someone tell me if it makes sense or offer better methods?Using VMware, create 3 images.-One image with only windows updates and essential programs (AV, VLC, browsers, etc).A copy image of that one with all non-game programs commonly used (office, gimp, wtvr). And a third copy with everything including games.Make copies and sysprep the copies.

Port Forwarding For A Private Wow Server

Jan 7, 2013

I've got a friend that approached me earlier today with the idea of running his own private wow server. While I know this is feasible, though maybe not with the hardware he is running, we are at a disagreement on whether or not it is possible for him to forward ports specifically for his computer and leave the rest of his household electronics unaffected by the security lapse inherent in doing so. Is it possible to forward ports for certain computers on a network and keep them closed for others?

Setting Up A Virtual Private Network

Oct 9, 2009

my girlfriends pc at her university blocks certain ports which are required by a website which she uses to watch tv online. Therefore as a work around, she bought a service which offered a VPN. This meant that she on her uni pc be connected to the uni internet, however then open a VPN connection which meant she would then be connected to this VPN and browse the internet through them whom do no block ports.

My question is could someone please advise me on how to do this, I have WIndows 7 and she has XP Pro. I tried setting up my pc as a host, allocating her a username and password and allowing incoming connections etc. however upon trying to get hers to connect to me, it just timed out and could not connect!

I would appreciate if someone could give me a step by step guide on how to set up my PC as the host and her PC as the client, in order for her to browse the internet using my internet, not her universities. I don't want remote desktop as dont want her having control and seing my desktop, just sharing my internet.

Network Sharing / Homegroup On Private LAN

Nov 4, 2009

I have searched but not found much with what I want to set up. I currently have a wireless connection to the internet for my PC and Laptop. What I would like to do is setup a private LAN with an old router to use but be able to keep the desktop connected to both WiFi and this LAN.

The only way I have managed to do so so far is by manually setting the IP address for the LAN (disable DHCP, change IP address etc) and assigning the LAN IP address manually to my desktop/laptop, leaving the gateway fields blank. I have noticed that doing this makes my network "Unknown" to Windows 7, which then forces it into Public mode, and disables Homegroup.

Is there a way for me to accomplish what I want?

Is pretty much how I want it to work. The desktop has two NICs, the laptop does not, so I realize the laptop would be a one-or-the-other scenario.

Windows 7 Account Security Files Not Private At All?

Feb 2, 2012

I have installed Windows 7 Home Premium. The Account (Michael) is an admin account. All my documents are located on another Hard Drive. I have changed the location of the corresponding document folders to the other HDD. (using the right click on select person folder, change location).A make a new standard account and I was shocked to find that this account can access all of the Michael's account documents, they're even indexed so when I search from the start menu, my own documents, videos and photos quite easily show up in the results. Just has to open up Computer, open the HDD with the documents, and walla! There they are. For all to view. How is this so? Nothing is private. In any way. This is ridiculous. These are actually listed under my personal folder, but accessible to anyone. Doesn't even state the standard account needs permission. Plus it's indexed!I've tried changing the security settings on the folder, to no avail. I've looked in the indexing locations, and my personal folder isn't even listed in the areas to index
