Windows 7 Account Security Files Not Private At All?

Feb 2, 2012

I have installed Windows 7 Home Premium. The Account (Michael) is an admin account. All my documents are located on another Hard Drive. I have changed the location of the corresponding document folders to the other HDD. (using the right click on select person folder, change location).A make a new standard account and I was shocked to find that this account can access all of the Michael's account documents, they're even indexed so when I search from the start menu, my own documents, videos and photos quite easily show up in the results. Just has to open up Computer, open the HDD with the documents, and walla! There they are. For all to view. How is this so? Nothing is private. In any way. This is ridiculous. These are actually listed under my personal folder, but accessible to anyone. Doesn't even state the standard account needs permission. Plus it's indexed!I've tried changing the security settings on the folder, to no avail. I've looked in the indexing locations, and my personal folder isn't even listed in the areas to index

How To Make Windows 7 User's Folder Private

Apr 29, 2010

In Windows XP there was an option where I could make all my user folders and files in my profile private. In Windows 7 I just cant find the setting anywhere. I have two users on my computer. Me (as administrator) and my girlfriend (as standard user)

Whenever she is doing a search or browse the folders on the computer she gets a lot of results and all my documents and pictures is showing up. No restriction at all. She can delete, edit and so on. I can (obviously) do the same to her files and folders. We both have password protected profiles.

When ever I do a search all her files / mail and documents shows up, because the indexing service is generally at one configuration. All users can search/browse all files in every profile on the computer.

In Windows XP that simply did not happen.

Så where is the setting to make my private folders/files private? if there is a simple way. It seems like Microsoft forgot something otherwise.

Temp Folder Not Accessible?

Oct 26, 2011

I have no idea what my mother has done but when I got the computer I started recieving all types of error messages and all pointed to the Temp folder. I also did a scan with Registry Easy and fixed all the new errors that appeared with this but all were fixed besides the Temp folder.

I searched and no one has given me a straight answer. I dont have the Windows 7 disc because I got this computer from a pawn. (nothing was wrong with it I know for a fact) Is there any other way to fix this besides restarting the entire pc. I know there is...

the Temp folder has crippled nearly 45% of my pc. I have work to finish up and this is killing me

I have a password but that's not the point, I want to be able to make the my documents folder inaccessible completely from other computers on the network. It's disabled in the sharing properties but that makes no difference. Any ideas?

Cannot Take Ownership Of Folder - No Security Tab In Properties

Mar 26, 2012

I have a folder with a saved webpage on it on a DVD that I am trying to copy to my computer, when I try it first tells me that I need to provide administrator permission to copy the file (I thought I was admin). Then when I click continue it says: "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission from Everyone to make changes to this file"

And all I can to is keep hitting Retry. If I try to take ownership of the folder I run into another problem, when I right click the folder and go to properties, there is no security tab, just General, Sharing, and Customize. And if I uncheck the Read Only box, I get Access Denied!

Account Unknown - Appearing In Security Tab On Folder Properties?

Jun 5, 2012

I am concerned about these "Unknown Accounts" that are appearing in the security tab on folder options the type of unknown accounts are:

Account Unknown(S-15-21-etc
Account Unknown(S-15-21-etc
Account Unknown(S-15-80-etc

In terms of security on my computer it leaves a concern; i just want to known if its safe to have these unknown accounts and they're not for example a remote hacker of some sort especially when the last "account unknown" is related to a network of somesort that has access to files on my computer through a network/proxy which does concern me quite a bit and i hope not... although ive done some brief research on unknown accounts each forum is telling me a different story. If its any relation there was a standard user account that was created on windows 7 but has been deleted im just wondering if any one of them accounts has any relation to the unknown accounts.

Install Software As Standard User Without Local Admins

Aug 6, 2010

We are implementing Windows 7 and Bitlocker as encryption. While this works brilliantly, I am now worried that our offsite engineers if they are given Local admin rights, can disable bitlocker. They need to install software onto there machines and this cannot be taken away from them. Problem is company policy also states that they are not allowed to disable the encryption, which is where my dilemma lies. I can lock down bitlocker through Grou Policy, but the offsite engineers are software developers so it wouldn't take them long to disable it if they do have local admins. Is there anyway at all I can give them access to install software without Local admins?

Allow Domain Users To Install Software Updates Without Being Admins?

Dec 6, 2011

I work in and oversee the computer network of a small architecture office. We only have 6 or 7 users right now, and about 12-14 active machines throughout the office. All machines connect through our office domain to our server box running Windows Server 2003 x86. Most production machines are now running Windows 7 x64, but there are a few XP x86 machines still left in the office. Everyone logs onto their machine using their username and password, which is set up in Active Directory Users and Computers on the server. Each username has a login script associated with it that maps various shared folders on the server as network drives on the workstations.

Right now, each user's workstation has that username set up as an Administrator account on that machine. I know that's not recommended, but it's been okay so far. However as time passes, I'm getting more and more concerned about network and computer security.

I'd like to know if there's a way to set up user accounts such that it won't ask for an Admin user name and password every time a program needs an update, but also doesn't allow them full access like Admins have, i.e. deleting software and such.

The issue is that I don't want to have to run around and enter an admin user name and password on the Windows 7 machines every time some software update appears or the user needs to install some software on a machine. We're a small office and don't rely on any actual IT department. I have many other responsibilities in the architecture field (working drawing production, project management, etc) and don't have time to always do that, especially when I'm out of the office on a jobsite, etc.

"Unknown Users" Listed In Properties/Security Of A Folder?

PROBLEM: "unknown Users" are listed in Properties/Security of a folder.I have Windows 7, 64-bit. The Properties/Security box of my "C:\Users\[my name]" folder lists two Users called"Account Unknown (S-1-5-21-879640176-2077098734-2292519611-1001)"and, "Home Users", in addition to the legitimate Users "SYSTEM","Administrators", and "[my name]".After deleting the computer's Limited Acct, the 2 Users are still listed."S-1-5-21-879640176-2077098734-2292519611-1001" is not found by the Yahoo Search Engine. The Windows folder-specific search engine for "C:" and for "Users" searches essentiallyindefinitely. That for the folder named after myself finds nothing.

Sysprep Images For Private Distribution?

Aug 10, 2012

I'm finding that I've been installing/reinstalling windows a couple of times a month recently. Either I'm giving a "fresh start" to on of my household's computers or building a new computer for a friend or family member. This not only takes a lot of time but also a lot of bandwidth. Updating windows over and over again is a pain and games are commonly 10-20GB a piece nowadays.

Here's my plan, can someone tell me if it makes sense or offer better methods?Using VMware, create 3 images.-One image with only windows updates and essential programs (AV, VLC, browsers, etc).A copy image of that one with all non-game programs commonly used (office, gimp, wtvr). And a third copy with everything including games.Make copies and sysprep the copies.

Port Forwarding For A Private Wow Server

Jan 7, 2013

I've got a friend that approached me earlier today with the idea of running his own private wow server. While I know this is feasible, though maybe not with the hardware he is running, we are at a disagreement on whether or not it is possible for him to forward ports specifically for his computer and leave the rest of his household electronics unaffected by the security lapse inherent in doing so. Is it possible to forward ports for certain computers on a network and keep them closed for others?

Setting Up A Virtual Private Network

Oct 9, 2009

my girlfriends pc at her university blocks certain ports which are required by a website which she uses to watch tv online. Therefore as a work around, she bought a service which offered a VPN. This meant that she on her uni pc be connected to the uni internet, however then open a VPN connection which meant she would then be connected to this VPN and browse the internet through them whom do no block ports.

My question is could someone please advise me on how to do this, I have WIndows 7 and she has XP Pro. I tried setting up my pc as a host, allocating her a username and password and allowing incoming connections etc. however upon trying to get hers to connect to me, it just timed out and could not connect!

I would appreciate if someone could give me a step by step guide on how to set up my PC as the host and her PC as the client, in order for her to browse the internet using my internet, not her universities. I don't want remote desktop as dont want her having control and seing my desktop, just sharing my internet.

Network Sharing / Homegroup On Private LAN

Nov 4, 2009

I have searched but not found much with what I want to set up. I currently have a wireless connection to the internet for my PC and Laptop. What I would like to do is setup a private LAN with an old router to use but be able to keep the desktop connected to both WiFi and this LAN.

The only way I have managed to do so so far is by manually setting the IP address for the LAN (disable DHCP, change IP address etc) and assigning the LAN IP address manually to my desktop/laptop, leaving the gateway fields blank. I have noticed that doing this makes my network "Unknown" to Windows 7, which then forces it into Public mode, and disables Homegroup.

Is there a way for me to accomplish what I want?

Is pretty much how I want it to work. The desktop has two NICs, the laptop does not, so I realize the laptop would be a one-or-the-other scenario.
