Unhide All Files, Some Programs Still Missing?
Feb 8, 2012
After cleaning up from a bunch of bad viruses all of my files were hidden. I followed the directions from another thread to unhide them and recovered my photos and documents, but there are still some things wrong. My video clips will not play, and when I search for Windows Media Player there are no results. I went to the of control panel and add/remove programs, turn windows features on/off, and the box for Media Player is clear. How can I find it?

I have windows 7 home premium 64bit this has to be one of the nastiest viruses i have ever gotten and it kept telling me my hard drive clusters were messed up(laptop is barely 3 weeks old) and after i rebooted it, a program called PC performance and stability analysis kept running. I removed it though(maybe!notsure) using mbam and sas in safe mode. and ran both programs twice. after this everything was missing in the start menu and programs list. as well as the desktop shorcuts and my wallpaper was gone just a black screen. after reading over other topics of people have the same problem, i found unhide.exe which helped somewhat it found all my documents and such but not much. another topic i found explained how to use systemlook.exe and it keeps saying file not found and i have no idea of what do next? also im not even sure this trojan is gone, beacuse some programs get errors when they open up.

I had one of these nasty system restore viruses and managed to get it off by running two different Malware programs each two times, where i had to get creative and load it using a USB stick and change the names to actually get rid of all the files.I then ran a system restore to the point just before this thing got on my computer and then half my folders returned. When I did the Unhide to Show the rest, they came back but are faded out or half lit. Office files won't open so I am assuming I need to re-install but before I do anything else, how do I get the files to show fully? Computer also will not start in normal mode, only safe. Got it to at least boot in Safe with Networking on this last round.

i have a problem and i found this forum which seems good in providing solutions.I was attacked today by a malware and I did some actions to get rid of it and now all seems good.Among my actions I used unhide.exe.the problem now is that ALL my files and folders are visible, even those which were supposed to be hidden.Well, maybe there is no harm in that but maybe they were hidden for a reason, that's why i would like to restore them to their default state.I see in many places that they say to do this:Start Menu - type in Search box -> CMD find at top - Right Click on - RUN AS ADMINType or Copy and Paste this at the prompt :secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verboset i'm afraid to do it because elsewhere it says that it may make my system unstable and not restore all the default security settings.

I know they are hidden and i have a lot of duplicates and what no and want to have a good clean up and possibly grab as much artwork as possible without going to google and going through the sordid take of finding them again. Now i know mine are all hidden and not embedded because a while ago i was using Recuva and did a full scan of hard drives and the first info it pulled up was the folders for the music with the album art showing but of course no music. Is this possible, after looking on google, i just seem to find people saying about un-hidding normal folders.

I'm sorry to trouble you all. We have WIN7. When you click on the Window's Logo you can see Programs & to the right of that in a different shaded area is Control Panel, Computer, etc. I'm not sure what the correct term is for this area but that entire area is now blank! I can get access to Control Panel, My Computer, etc. from other ways but this is really odd. Please see link to screen shot to get a better idea what I'm discussing.

caught what looked like a bug, today--from an emial, I'm guessing-- everything slowed down until it virtually stopped and I manually powered down/into safe mode to work on it. It cost me an entire am to run thru all my virus 'catchers' (and came up with exactly NOTHING to show for it!!) whatever it was has, I guess, been erradicated, as everything feels back to normal.everything looks ok(except a couple of desktop icons were rearranged--but that can/does happen anyway). As I said--every looks/seems to be ok. However when I went into 'start' all the info that should be showing on the left side of that 1st page is blank! all the names on the right seems ok/present. AND when I go to 'all progs' there are no "obvious' omissions(not that I'm sure I'd recognize that one!)
I've been using comodo bkup(goes off like every night and is NOT an online bkup) and NOW, when I actually need it to get the 5/12 data, I cannot access it(but that's grist for a later discussion!!!!).so there are, apparently, for all intents/purposes NO backups to pull from. it only tells me "unabgle to open bkup file"... no matter which entry I highlight. This was(supposedly) setup by the tech that did the work on this new box so it 'should' have been ok(NOT!!!).any insight into what I can/need to do to get the backup part to work properly for the restore part CAN work?

All of a sudden running programs that I have minimized no longer have an icon on the task bar so that I can open them up when needed. I have to go to the task manager to get to them. Not sure what I did but I can't seem to get them to display on the task bar again.

Before installing Windows 7 on my (hitherto Vista) VAIO I effected a full backup on an external hard drive.
I then installed Windows 7 and noticed all my program files were missing. When I went into the Windows.old folder I was able to see a good deal of them, seemingly most of those that I had installed myself, such as iTunes, 7Zip, etc.
The programs that were already installed on the VAIO when I bought it from the VAIO store, however, were absent. For example the whole Sony Recovery tool program, Adode Photoshop and others.
When I connected the hard drive to the laptop I was able to see the backup I had done just before Windows 7 installation but when I tried to expand the folder down (hoping to see 'Program Files') I only saw a series of strange looking (albeit large) files that didn't mean very much.
Presumably this is the way in which my backup was encrypted or stored, but is there a way in which I can access the individual programs from the hard drive so that I can put them back on my laptop?
I was able to find all my music, videos and documents in the Windows.old folder, and have restored them, but the missing programs worry me. Also the amount of free space on the laptop is identical now to when I still had Vista on there, making me think that perhaps the 'missing' programs haven't been deleted at all but may just be hiding somewhere in the 'Windows.old' folder. But I could well be wrong about that.

However, I would like to be able have access to the start toolbar and able to have desktop icons available to me. I did an upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7077 ultimate..Everything went smoothly with only one or two uncompatible programs. when I click on Start | All Programs every one of my installed programs icons are missing. I have to search for the program to start it and pin it to the taskbar if I want to keep it accessible.I've tried a few registry hacks, security settings and even tried to copy some shortcuts over. I also tried restoring all the default shortcuts to the C:UsersMYUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu - You can see in the screenshot only a few items have shown up.I've tried creating a new admin account and the problem is repeated there as well..No program icons in the All Programs Menu. My version is activated.

I noticed something was wrong when I could not login on Skype when the input boxes did not show up.I noticed the gadgets, which have been installed since installation a year ago, suddenly were hardly visible and are non-functional. The option button is also missing. The machine is a Toshiba laptop, with all update functions active, ie drivers should all be up-to-date. I'm running Windows 7 64 Home Premium SP1.I tried switching off aero, but that did nothing. Changing resolution and graphics settings also did nothing for me.

I recently followed procedures for removal a rogue Windows 7 Recovery malware application on my Windows 7 Home Premium system. After the successful removal of the malware, my Start Menu Programs are all missing (basically nothing in there) and 95% of all my icons (on the desktop, within Win Explorer) are all grayed-out. (They still work but are gray). I have a feeling it could be a corrupted user profile, but I'm not sure. So far, I've restarted twice, right-clicked the start button to make sure default settings are set, ran a CMD prompt with SFC /SCANNOW.

So I just built a new gaming computer with the following relevant specs..- Win 7 Enterprise- 90GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD- 750GB Hitachi Sata III, 7200RPM HDD- Games: World of Warcraft, Skyrim, Star WarsMy thought was to just save the OS and games on the SSD for best performance, and everything else on the HDD. I did that initially and only used about 50GB on the SSD.Since then I've downloaded many drivers, manuals, game mods, and programs (like Adobe, Logitech, etc), most of which just saved directly to the SSD without giving me the option of a different path? Now I have only 5GB left on my SSD and want to make sure I only keep the files/programs on it that will provide the best performance.n my SSD I have 4 files:Program Files - contains drivers (Asus mobo, DVD recorder, Mcafee, etc), IE, McAfee, Nvidia, and Windows files (Dfender, Media Player, etc)Program Files (x86) - contains many of the same files that the "Program Files" has in it??Users - My documents, Downloads, Desktop, etc...Windows - bunch of stuff that looks like it needs to be thereQuestions:1) What kind of files/programs should I keep on my SSD vs. my HDD aside from the OS and games for best performance?2) I read in a thread here that "Program Files" folder is for programs designed for 64-bit, and the programs that go into "Program Files (x86)" folder are designed for 32-bit. But, why are things duplicated in them, and why (even as an Admin) can't I delete files off them (tells me I don't have permission)? Do I really need files in both of them if I'm running at 64 bit??3) I'm often not given a choice on where to save downloaded programs. How do I set it up so all my downloaded programs save to my HDD moving forward?

When I make a backup copy of a dvd the ISO image is set to be saved to the C drive, yet when it's complete there is no trace of it. I've also tried saving it to specific folders and it never turns up there. I've tried searches and no results are found.
