want to be able to have a completely clear desktop, void of icons and start toolbar with a hot key. However, I would like to be able have access to the start toolbar and able to have desktop icons available to me. This is where the hot key would come into play: the ability to hide/unhide both sets (icons and toolbar) simultaneously

View 1 Replies View RelatedI like to use the Desktop folder to save items temporarily, but I keep a clean desktop background with no icons displayed. This option is accessed by right clicking the desktop and deselecting View>Show Desktop Icons. I've been doing this since I was using Windows Vista. My problem is that now my Windows 7 OS never remembers this setting. Whenever I turn my computer on the icons have reappeared. Additionally, when I go to deselect the option, I have to do it twice for it to take effect. Is this a known bug? It's really annoying, especially when there may be things on the desktop you don't want others to see when you login.

View 0 Replies View RelatedThis morning I powered the computer following the Christmas break (Windows 7 64 bit). The screen displayed the backgorund colour only, not a black screen. There was no desktop, icons or start menu. The keyboard did not function; could not start Task Manager. Pressed the Windows key + f5; no response. Pointer shows and moves with mouse but no mouse functionality.
I rebooted in safe mode and the system was restored with limited Safe Mode functionality. I ran ESET virus scan; no viruses found. I rebooted; no change. I attempted to do a System Restore to earlier this morning prior to a Windows update install dated 2012-12-26: 729 EST. No change. I attempted to restore to an earlier restore point last week; no change. I am currently running CHKDSK /R in order to verify that there are no disk problems. I have all data files backed up but do not have a disk image.
I cannot download TSG SysInfo until I get the desktop back.
I downloaded the new IE and lost all icons n left and bottom of screen

Firstly I had an update from Java.Then I shut my computer down and went to bed.During the night, my UPS board starting beeping. We were having power problems, I think a brown out.The power went out completely then all my other electronics like my tv, kettle, washing machine etc, starting working properly again.So I can't say whether it was the power problem that has caused this or the Java update. I have done a system restore which didn't help. I have done Windows+R and typed in 'explorer.exe"..which only gave me a black screen. I have run all antivirus programs and nothing is being picked up.

If I leave the screen up for various amounts of time, the start menu and desktop icons disappear and my wallpaper is the only thing i see on my screen. It will not give me the chance to alt cntrl delete, I can right click but it only gives me the breifcase options. I was on the phone with hp,. they remotely accessed, saw nothing wrong. I took back the other computer, and now my new one is doing the same thing. I hate to turn off the computer by pushing the button, especially when Im trying to keep my new computer working properly. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have windows 7 home premium 64bit this has to be one of the nastiest viruses i have ever gotten and it kept telling me my hard drive clusters were messed up(laptop is barely 3 weeks old) and after i rebooted it, a program called PC performance and stability analysis kept running. I removed it though(maybe!notsure) using mbam and sas in safe mode. and ran both programs twice. after this everything was missing in the start menu and programs list. as well as the desktop shorcuts and my wallpaper was gone just a black screen. after reading over other topics of people have the same problem, i found unhide.exe which helped somewhat it found all my documents and such but not much. another topic i found explained how to use systemlook.exe and it keeps saying file not found and i have no idea of what do next? also im not even sure this trojan is gone, beacuse some programs get errors when they open up.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satallite with Windows 7 installed. I now have no start button, windows task bar and all of my desktop icons have gone missing.
When I restart the laptop (via CTRL + ALT + DEL) I see all of the missing items listed for about 10 seconds...then they all disappear. What I have left is my personalised background image (my cute 2 month old nephew with my sunglasses) and a windows explorer window. Nothing else.
So far I have managed to access my Virus protection software (AVG) and run a scan. It didn't find anything. I ran my spyware application (Spybot Search and Destroy) again nothing.

i had my desktop taskbar and start bottom... the problem is no desktop image same on my taskbar... only the tittle i can see on my desktop but still i can access to my program... another things is my start bottom is lock or shall i say not functioning only left click is working but right click nothing happened.... more over its to bad to me i can't access to Internet....

There are 2 other infrequent users and I would like to hide their icons and just show mine. Recently on two occasions when I booted up the Sign On screen had only my icon and I was pleasantly surprised. I was not aware this was even possible, and still do not know what I did to make this happen. It seems to me that there is a way to adjust the software to make this happen at every boot up. View 4 Replies View RelatedThe little popup box in the tray that comes up when you hit the up arrow (to "Show hidden icons") is bugging me. It seems to have a timer built in that hides it a couple seconds after you click on one of the icons inside. This really bugs me. I would prefer that it either hide itself immediately after I click on one of the icons (but not if I right click one, obviously) or else lets me hide it by clicking directly on it somewhere. I know I can hide it by clicking on the arrow again, but some of my tray applications (namely my Portable Apps Launcher) minimize again if I click that arrow, leaving me with no other option than to wait for that annoying box to hide itself and get out of the way.

My old PC was running XP and all my program shortcuts in the Quick Launch Toolbar had relevant icons on them. However, although some shortcuts I've put on my 7 QLT have appeared with the relevant icons, for instance FF and TB, 3 other programmes have just come up as blank cream coloured folders. So is there a way to get the proper icons instead of the blanks?
