Unable To Ping IPhone On Any WiFi Outside Home Network
Sep 7, 2011
There's a program I use (Pocket Informant iPhone Outlook Sync) which requires that my PC and iPhone be on the same network in order to sync.
The problem is that it works only when using my home network. When I'm at home, from my PC I am able to successfully ping my iPhone, which is connected to my WiFi network. This works whether myh PC is also ethernet-connected or WiFi-connected.
When I travel, however, even though I successfully connect to the WiFi network on my iPhone and PC, I am unable to ping my iPhone.
I have tried disabling the Windows Firewall and I get the same result!
I can't believe that all these different WiFi networks I connect to (airport, hotel, work) that they all have a configuration issue, so I'm thinking that the reason for the discrepancy must be because of some setting/configuration on my PC/home network.
Is there anyhing else besides disabling the Windows Firewall that I can try?

My old computer crashed and I'm now on a new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I installed the latest iTunes successfully, but found that my iPhone 4 is now not syncing with it. It can detect the phone, but it's not adding or deleting anything - apps, music or photos. I used to be able to select a Photo Folder to sync from the PC hard drive, but now it no longer works. It, however, works well with my notebook which is running on Win Vista.
There is no error message, the sync and backup apparently goes on only for a few seconds, and then iTunes says it is searching for which apps to install but nothing changes. Even when I've clicked Apply.
I've also tried closing iTunes and I've rebooted the phone but no dice. I've also uninstalled iTunes to reinstall. Doesn't work either. And yes, I installed with the 64-bit installer.

I have been using my home internet in my new place for a couple of weeks fine, yesterday morning when I tried it it had the limited access yellow triangle and wouldnt connect.I reset the router and connected to the wifi on my iphone which worked fine, I checked the DNS numbers were the same as on my iphone which they were and I had not changed any settings. I spent the entire day yesterday online looking for solutions, Ive reset the adapter, disabled it etc, set the ip and dns to automatic and back again etc etc.
When my wifi tries to connect to my home internet it takes a LONG time to identify and then identifies it either as an unidentified network and/or public. Even when I change it to home it changes it back to public or just doesnt let me change it to home and says try again later.
Ps- I just tried disabling then re-enabling the protocol 6 on the wifi which isnt working and it just said in order to configure TCP/IP, you must install and enable a network adapter card. But then it just let me configure it and is still connected but with limited access and public network.

I recently had a new internet connection setup this morning. It was working fine up until 4-5 hours ago, now i cannot browse websites. I can ping yahoo.ca and other domain names and get responses. Im writing this on my iphone connected over wifi, so the problem is strictly with my pc. Pc is connected by wire and it is running win 7.I cannot access my routers firmware by my pc(but i can on my iphone).Ive tried reinstalling network card drivers, disabling ipv6, inputting googles public dns servers on my adapter settings as well as several command prompt lines that i found by googling. (flushdns and netsh reset). Ive tried google chrome and ie. For what its worth, i was able to download and install a windows update.

Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.
PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router
The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.
The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.
I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1
But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".

Unable to see home network computers in Windows Explorer Network screen.
I have a home network with 2 laptops and 1 desktop. The desktop I use as a "file server" in that all work done on the laptops is stored to the desktop. The desktop computer name is HAL. One laptop is fine and sees the network. The other just stopped seeing it; rebooted the laptop; rebooted HAL; did a number of refreshes without any luck. I opened EXCEL and found a worksheet that was listed that I knew was saved on HAL. Was able to open the file and when I tried the SAVE AS I could navigate through all of HAL just as normal. Went to Windows Explorer and still no HAL listed as a COMPUTER on the NETWORK. I have a internet connection so I know I am making it to the router at least. And when I check NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER it shows an active home network. The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

I'm having trouble getting on my home wireless internet using my iPhone. My router is in the basement, and whenever I'm on the third floor, my laptop gets around 2 bars, but my iPhone can't pick up the signal. So is there any way that I can use my laptop as a second router to extend my wifi to my iPhone? I've tried third party programs like Virtual Router Manager, Connectify, Maryfi, but my iPhone (4S model) picks up the signal for like 20 seconds, and then the wifi just drops for 10 minutes, then picks it up again for like 20 seconds, then drops for like 10 minutes again, and on...) Is there any way that windows 7 can do it natively?

I am looking to connect to a wireless network that does not have an internet connection and at the same time tether to my iPhone so I can connect to the internet. My iPhone tethers through Bluetooth without any issue and I have a connection to the internet. As soon as I join a wireless network, Windows drops the internet connection to my iPhone. The iPhone and Windows are still connected to each other through Bluetooth, but under the task bar icon it says "No Internet Access" below the Network name. The task bar icon also changes from the ethernet Icon to the wifi strength icon.It seems like the wifi connection is overriding the bluetooth connection. Is there a way to maintain the IP address and Bluetooth internet connection and at the same time connect to the wifi network and access the devices I need on the wifi network?

why, when connecting wirelessly under Windows 7, to a wireless access point I am unable to change the "Network Type" from Public to Home, thus no connection to the Internet is allowed? I cannot change any of the parameters of the network at all. Under XP on the same network I have no problems at all.I have set up three access points by simply adding additional wireless modems (of the same brand as the primary modem), turning off DCHP and U PnP and assigning a unique IP address, to avoid DCHP conflicts (as I understood it).Which change would I have to make to the access points such that Windows 7 fully recognises each access point and allow me to assign them to type "Home"?

I have a PC desktop Windows 7 ultimate 64bit and Dell Vostro 3500 Windows 7 professional 64bit. Both connected through D-Link 655 router and they are in same WORKGROUP with files and printer sharing enable. As security the PC has Malwarebytes Anti-Malwares, Comodo firewall, Avira free antivirus. The Vostro has Zonealarm firewall and Avast for anti-virus.Recently I bought a NAS (Synology DS211J) in order to centralize important documents, media files and the printer. My desktop Windows 7 ultimate has no problem connecting to the NAS. I can ping the NAS ip and name. I can see the NAS listed in network from windows explorer connect to it and browse the NAS directories...yes flawless! However the Dell 3500 could ping the NAS ip and name but I do not see the NAS in the laptop Network of Windows Explorer therefore I could not access the NAS and browse the directories. Both PC and Vostro could ping each other ip and name, both are listed in their respective Network of Windows Explorer and I could access to each other shared folders. For debugging I turned all securities softwares down on both PC . Problem still persist i.e. Vostro can ping NAS but do not see it in network. I have another laptop winXP Home edition 32bit and I could ping both PC and the NAS by their ip and names. I could access from that laptop the shared folders of the PC Windows 7 ultimate and NAS but not the Vostro. Vostro can ping ip and name of laptop winXP but not listed on his network places.
why the Vostro 3500 can ping the other machines by ip and name but it does not listed them in the network windows? Is it because of a Windows service not enable, a setting or something in the registry?

Last night I was on the internet at home absolutely fine and my laptop automatically downloaded an update, since then I have been unable to connect to my wi-fi. I deleted the updates and was still unable to connect, so I tried to used a system recovery restore point and every one I use starts but fails to complete. So, I did a factory reset after around 8 hours of trying to sort it out today and I STILL have the same problem. I can plug in the cable to connect and my housemate is having absolutely no issues connecting and neither is my phone so now I am at a total loss what I should do to resolve this. Prior to the factory reset I was able to connect to the wi-fi but it was stating no network access/limited access and now it simply won't connect to my internet at all. It finds my full strength signal but will not connect. My drivers for the Broadcom 4313 802.11b/g/n card are the most up to date and the laptop (HP G62) says it is working fine.

I have an iPhone 4 which has internet tethering. I can either connect this via the USB cable or wirelessly via my intel 6300N wifi card.
When I connect to my laptop via USB cable, the 'Set Network Location' box comes up, which I select Home Network. It is simply named 'Network', but I then go in and change 'Network' to 'iPhone'. This then shows up in the Network and Sharing Centre as iPhone on a Home Network. This works perfectly, is super fast and when I'm finished, I disconnect the USB and shut down.
When I next turn on my laptop and connect my iPhone internet tether via USB cable, I am once again asked to ''Select a location for the 'Network' network''. Windows 7 netwkr and Sharing centre isn't recognising the same iPhone is connected and asks me to set up a home network again.
I've gone into 'Merge or delete network locations' and the original 'iPhone home network' is set up (not in use) as well as the new 'Network' location that it's asking me to set up. If I merge the second 'Network' and original 'iPhone network', this removes the second network and I'm left with the 'iPhone Home network (in use).
If I disconnect the iPhone and reconnect, it asks me each time to select a network location for the 'network' network. If I don't merge them, I end up with Network 2, Network 3, Network 4 etc all the while still having the original iPhone network not in use as well as any other not merged or deleted.
Why won't it recognise the same iPhone as being connected and selecting the iphone home network that I set up and why does it keep asking me to create a new one whenever I connect?
This never happened before, with my laptop previously recognising the iPhone home network I originally created ages ago. There has been no significant updates or changes that I'm aware of, except that I updated my iPhone software, bt this has been done in the past numerous times with previous iPhone updates and hasn't happened before.
I have a Virgin wireless broadband usb modem, which the system recognises each time I connect it. It's only the iPhone connection that's not saving. The iPhone network is 'unmanaged' but so is the Virgin Broadband USB.
I have a Pioneer Dreambook P170HMx running Windows 7pro x64. If there's any other details you need, I'm happy to supply them. All I want is my system to save the network configuration and recognise when I connect the iPhone tethering that it's an already created iPhone Home Network.

5 month old Dell XPS 8500 Win 7 64 bit Pro as main computer connected by Wired Adapter, Upgraded Gateway 5632E also running Win 7 64 bit pro as second connected by Wireless. Both running Kapersky successfully. no network problems for 5 mo.
Both were successfully linked using homegroup. Had to take Gateway to a remote location to do a business demo. While there had to link to a local public WiFi. While connecting made mistake and left homegroup.
When Gateway returned to homebase a few days later it was fine, had no problems finding wireless but could not see or rejoin Dell machine homegroup. It would let me set up a new homegroup.
Went to Dell box and found 1) homegroup no longer existed, 2) router and network and wireless printing no longer found - Red X on the taskbar) even though internet was still working fine.
Took nearly a week of trying differernt fixes, on adapter- off adapter- different adapter reboot network, router, even updated router firmware (Yes I went through every ipconfig reset, renew, redecorate etc. I've used netsh functions to try to get evrything to reset. Changes services.msc settings per other posts. Finally in desperation, deleted every sub key in the registry related to network locational awareness and got the Dell to find the network, let me set it up as a "home" network and then even see the invitation to join the Gateway's homegroup.
Then I hit a wall- when I try to join- Win 7 says I can't join the homegroup because the network is not a "home network". Of course troubleshooting is useless and goes into an endless loop. Have searched in desperation for any way to make Win 7 return to a clean slate so it can sense that it really is on a home network without success. Applied the fix-it and hotpatch for when Win 7 gets stuck in public mode. No joy. Deleted the hide wizard subkey as suggested elsewhere. No Joy. Gut feeling says problem must lie in the NLA or peer networking somewhere but where?
Does anyone know of a method or set of steps (short of a clean reinstall of Win 7) to completely clear every thing the OS knows about my network and force it to acknowlege my network is a home network? Is there a registry hack that will clear the problem?
I know I could abandon the homegroup and do conventional file/print share but I am concerned that using that solution won't last as whatever is screwing up the homegroup could eventually screw regular sharing and then I'm back to reformating/reinstalling. I'm just about ready to join the Apple folks so I never have to work on Windows again.

I'm reimaging one of my home systems that I intend to use as a "sterile" system (I will visit very a very limited selection sites on it, such as banking sites). I'm considering establishing the network location as "Public" instead of "Home", rationale being this would help prevent cross infection from other computers on my home network if they get a worm or virus. I do have friends that come over and hop on my network sometimes and who knows what contamination their systems have. Is this being overly paranoid? Will it cause annoying problems for this sterile system or other systems in my home network? I don't intend to share anything on this system with other computers on my home network. Seems to me that this ought to be the recommended setting for any computer always ... you can always share files using a USB drive if you really need to. Thoughts? Again maybe I am being overly paranoid. Back in the day there used to be worms that would look for ways to hop from system to system over the network, maybe that's much much harder these days. I do have a router between the DSL modem and my home network and I do run Norton Internet Security on all my systems?

I'm having difficulty trying to get my new Windows 7 pc set up to share files across my existing home (wired) network which consists of 1 desktop pc running WinXP and 1 laptop running WinXP.I want the 'C' drive on each of the 3 computers to be shared. I've had the 2 Windows XP computers set up and working like this for several years without a problem but I can't seem to get the 'C' drive on the Windows 7 computer to do the same. All 3 computers have the same workgroup name and none of them require passwords to log on to Windows. There are no problems with the firewalls on any of the machines. On the Windows 7 PC when I right click on the 'C' drive and select the 'Sharing' tab, I have set this up to be shared and when I click on the 'Advanced Sharing' button there is a tick in the 'Share this folder' box, the 'Share name' is 'C'. If I then click on the 'Permissions' button, this shows a 'Group or user name' 'Everyone' and this group has Full Control, Change and Read boxes ticked. As far as I can see there is nothing more I can do.
However from my Windows XP computer, when I go to My Network Places and double click on the icon for the Windows 7 'C' drive, I get the message "\Computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found"I've subsequently set up a sub folder (of the Windows 7 'C' drive) for sharing by right clicking on the folder, choosing 'Share with' and then selecting 'Specific people'. I then set up a group called 'Everyone' with read/write permissions. Now I can navigate to this folder from my 2 WinXP computers.

It connects to my work wifi network just fine (automatically) but I can't get it to connect to any wifi networks outside of work. If go to network settings and look at the wireless adapter and view available wifi networks, nothing comes up. It looks like the laptop has an alternative program that controls network adapter (Dell network adapter program) but it won't open when I double click it.

Home network with Wifi and ethernet. Using 3x Notebooks and 3x workstations. One of the workstations (W7 ultimate) keeps changing between Public and Home. When this happens, the internet connection dies. I cannot see other workstations either when on public network. Workstation using wifi. Does the same on cable. When it changes to Public, it disconnects from the internet and I cannot get to the router even though it has the workstation has an IP(DHCP or static). Default gateway and subnet is correct. TCP v4 is being used and nothing else is enabled.
Why is this happening?
- I have tried DHCP as well as Static addresses
- Reconfigured NIC(Netgear WG311T), uninstalled and reinstalled it.
- Removed Wifi connection and re-added it.
- Changed auth type, encryption type and keys to connection
Have I covered everything? The only thing different is that I installed a new router - Duo Plus 300wr. It cannot be the router because all the other notebooks connect to it wireless and so does my iPad, Android device and tablet...so it rules that out?
