Tutorials On Sharing Between Vista & Win 7 Computers

Feb 17, 2010

Home networks are more and more popular these days and making your home computers work together can be a challenge. While having only computers with Windows 7 installed can make your home networking life extremely easy, I'm sure many have older computers with older operating systems installed. In this article, I will continue our networking series and show how to share files and folders between Windows Vista and Windows 7 based computers. As you'll see, it's not that hard to make them work together.

File Sharing Between XP And W7 Computers

Dec 24, 2009

I have created my share folders with "everyone" permissions to read, write, and modify as explained (well) here:

Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP :: the How-To Geek

But when I go to copy a file from the XP computer to the Windows 7 computer I get the "Cannot Copy: Access is Denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use" message. I can copy files from the Windows 7 computer to the XP computer.

What more do I need to do to create "Easy File Sharing" between my home networked computers?

Only Have One-way Sharing Between Two Computers On Homegroup?

Nov 26, 2011

I just started up a homegroup between two wireless PCs, one laptop, one desktop. Both are joined to the Homegroup and I have turned off every setting I could find relating to password protection on both computers. I can pull off files from my laptop->PC just fine, but it doesn't happen the other way around. (Now on my laptop) I look at the homegroup tab for the desktop, and if I click on a folder (eg Music), nothing happens.

Now when I click on the "Network" tab on Windows Explorer (still on laptop), I can see both PCs on the network. When I click on the icon for my desktop, it asks for a username and password. WHAT??? I hunted down that info, found it in Windows credentials. (still on laptop) I tried entering the username and password that I found from both computers, but no dice. First off, I don't even remember setting a username and password...second, I have password protected sharing turned off on both machines.

Sharing Files Across Computers (XBMC)

I currently own a PC and a laptop. I have an external HD on my PC and I'm trying to be able to access those files through my laptop via XBMC. I've followed many tutorials online to no avail. I don't know much about networking or file sharing so there's my first downfall. I've tried setting up a home group on my main PC but the join home group option is grayed out on the laptop.

PC is windows 7 Professional x64
Laptop is Windows 8 x64

Sharing With Specific Users/computers In The Network?

Mar 20, 2011

i have a desktop and a laptop:

desktop:
user: alex
password: password

laptop:
user: alex
password: password

On the laptop, i now want to share a folder with the desktop, but only for the desktop, not for the whole homegroup, nor the whole network. They are both in the same homegroup, as well as some other computers.

As the accounts are the same I added the user 'alex' in the advanced sharing-options with full control. But it ditn't work, so I googled and also added full control for the user alex in the security options. But if I want to acces the folder from the desktop, I still get "no permissions". I, resp the user alex have/has admin-rights on both machines.Did I miss something?

I noticed that in the advanced settings of both sharing and security I can always just choose the local machine as a "location"... got this something to do with my problem?

Sharing With Specific Network User Or Computers.

Jul 13, 2010

I just built a Jerry-rigged light weight storage computer so I don't have to leave my dev/game comp/volcano on all the time anymore. I also bought a laptop recently as well. What I'd like to do is make the data (on two logical drives to be specific) completely accessible with full privileges to the laptop and this main PC however there are other users on the network that I don't want to share everything with (but still some).I can use PC Anywhere for some things but the end result I'm looking for is a handy couple of links on my desktop to the two raid drives and carry on as though they were still on my comp (and laptop now too), but also not include all users at the same time. (but also have the option to set up sharing for the folders they need access in too)Is this within the capacity of Windows 7? All computers have Win 7 and belong to the same home group.

Network Performance - 4 Computers Sharing An Access Database?

May 2, 2012

I am working on machines at a local car lot heres the system details.Verizon DSL wireless router, don't know the exact model but all 4 computers are hard wired to it with newer cat5e.4 newer desktop computers, within months. all 4 same specs. They are HP systems with 8gb of ram running Win 7 x64 They use a program called car lot manager, it basically is installed on 1 machine and creates an access database. Then that folder is shared. The other 3 computers install the software and access the database file through that share. The database file was about 100mb which I figured was probably the issue, so I cleaned it up and compressed it. Its now down to around 40mb and has the exact same issue.-- The issue is, if more than 2 computers have the car lot manager open (not even using, just open) it begins to move extremely slow to where windows take 2-3 minutes to open and the application hangs. And I'll add we have tried different combinations of which computers are running the software, trying to see if maybe 1 certain machine was the issue.I have been on the phone several times with the programmer of the software and he claims it is ran at several large car lots as well with 10 or much more computer systems and he verified everything is setup correct and looked through his software. The original setup was the Verizon modem into a netgear 8 port gig switch, then the 4 computers into it. I removed the switch just to see if anything changed, it didn't seem to make a difference.

File Sharing Problems/computers Not Finding Eachother

Sep 21, 2009

I have two computers both wirelessly connected via a Linksys WAG160N, one is a desktop, the other is a laptop.. Ultimately the desktop is pretty much a server with HDD storage/printer etc..

Now when I restart my computers/delete my adapters and let them reinstall I can usually connect my computers to one another and share files, however thats really about the only way to do it.. if I leave my computers on for 4 hours and come back they usually will lose connection.

What have I done/tried:

disabled ipv6

reset router

formatting

joining homegroup

wired/wireless connections

This problem is VERY frustrating, I just want to do simple file sharing and its turning out to be quite a problem.. ALSO when I do see my desktop from my laptop I cant access the hard drive I shared, only folders ive shared inside it.. I want to be able to share the HDD as a whole.. I've added access to everyone with full control, but it still doesnt work.

Please help, I would like to use my desktop as a server for my laptop/xbox but its turning out to be quite annoying.

Sharing Between Windows 7 And Vista?

May 11, 2011

I have tried to share Brotherhood MFC-7420 on my Windows 7 computer with a Vista machine (both 64bit, Home Premiums). If I try to add new printer through "add printer" option, I get this error message:"The server for the 'Brother MFC-7420 USB Printer' printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to search for the proper driver, clock OK. Otherwise, click Cancel and contact your network administrator or original equipment manufacturer for the correct printer driver."I dug around in Google for awhile, and some people used the trick where they installed the printer locally and changed the port name to \ComputerNamePrinter. When I do it, it gives me an error message: "Access Denied."I updated the driver.Network discovery is on.Printer Sharing is on.Password-Protected Sharing is off.The Windows 7 machine is in a Homegroup with 2 other Windows 7 computers.I tried lowering my Windows Firewall during connection.

Sharing A Folder To A Vista Computer

Oct 11, 2009

I know this question has been asked several times, and I've done a lot of research into it already, but I still can't seem to change my folder (in this case D:Movies) to be shared an accessed by my Vista x64 primary computer.

When I go into my Network and access the computer, it lets me view the shared folders that I've set sharing on, but when I actually double click the folder to open it I get this error message:

Windows cannot access XXXXX-DownloadsMovies

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. The error code is 0x80070005.

When I diagnose it tells me that the folder is available but my user account doesn't have access. However, I've already disabled password protected sharing, and I've accessed the Public section of my sharing settings and enabled everything that I read in previous posts, all to no avail.

I also read up on selecting the folder, then clicking the Share With.. tab and selecting "Everyone Read/Write", every time I try doing this as soon as I select the Share With.. tab again it's defaulted back to Nobody.

Here's the part I'm not sure could be causing all of this:

This folder, Movies, was originally on my Main Desktop PC (the Windows 7 machine is my new downloads machine) I bought a new 1.5TB sata2 hdd and set it up on my x64 vista (main) and transferred my movies folder on to it, then I uninstalled the hard drive and reinstalled it on my windows 7 x64 (downloads/secondary pc)

So the folder was originally on another computer, but was swapped via my new 1.5 TB hard drive, I'm not sure if this is related as I'm not a guru when it comes to any OS.

Regardless, I really need to get this folder on my Windows 7 machine accessible on my Windows Vista primary as soon as possible. If you need anymore information regarding either of my computers please let me know and I'll gather it as fast as I can,

Printer Sharing Windows 7 RC 64 To Vista 32

May 11, 2009

I downloaded Windows 7 RC 64 Bit Build:7100.0.090421-1700 x64.

After I installed it, I only had to install my wireless network drivers and Windows 7 downloaded the rest of all of my system. I did not have to install any driver at all.

My problem is when I try to print from my Vista 32 laptop nothing prints to my printer. Under active documents listed for my printer it just says under status | Error - Printing.

Under the ports tab on my Vista 32 laptop, the check is in the box [Windows 7 64][printer] | Local Port

Under the ports tab on my Window 7 64 Desktop, the check is in the box USB001 | Virtual printer port for USB

The 64 bit drivers for my printer are on the Windows 7 64 Desktop and the 32 bit drivers are on the Vista 32 laptop.

I do not know why I cannot share printing.

On Windows 7 64, share this printer is checked and Render print jobs on client computers is checked.

I know this seems to be a much talked about problem but I tried the best I could to follow the posted suggestions.

My Desktop has a Canon iP4600 printer.

My desktop's computer name is AGP-001 and the printer share name is CanoniP4.

Windows 7 Vs Vista Network File Sharing

Jul 3, 2009

I just bought a new laptop and decided to get windows 7 on it.

So far everything is great, i love how it looks and all works fine. Seting up wlan and all was no problem.

THE problem is... well with both old pcs (one pc one laptop) we had home network (or whatever network) set up so i could copy the files from sisters pc to my lappy and the other way around.

So now i have windows 7 on the new laptop.

And Vista on my old laptop (Vista 32 bit SP1)

And 0 idea what or where and how to do so i can share the files and get em from my old laptop on the new one... Flash is all fine and dandy but 100+Gb is a bit too much to be transfering with a 2Gb flash card <_< (old lappy does not have Bluetooth either btw...)

Are there any tutorials perhaps on how to get this done or at least ideas?

Vista / 7 - Problems With File Sharing / Printers

Dec 30, 2009

I have a Belkin wireless 'N' Router which is connected through a cable connection to my desktop with Vista OS. There is also a wireless enabled HP 110 Mini Netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition OS on which connects to the Belkin router. For some reason when I click on 'Network' and right click and hit explore from the Vista computer to look at the Netbooks files it will not let me... both File Sharing and Pulblic File Sharing are turned on.

The networks are both configured to "Home Networks". Also I am unsure how to get my printer (A non-wireless enabled HP Photosmart C4200 which is wired to my Vista computer) onto the network for use on the Netbook. This concerns me as it says all USB printers should so up in the network by default. Does anyone have any suggestions or help?

Windows Ultimate 7 SP1 Breaks Printer Sharing With Vista?

Jun 12, 2011

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and sharing a printer to other laptops running in the household using Vista and XP. I installed sp1 last weekend and then laptops stopped being able to print. Spent 3 hours on it yesterday and finally rolled back and things are now working again.I did notice that after sp1 my home group had been changed back to the "MSHOME" default. After changing it back to the exiting name, I could see the network printer and also edit files on any of the machines I had set access for. I also could set the print on the Vista release and my desktop with 7 would work just fine so no network issues. When I moved the printer back to 7, the Vista laptop would get an error while trying to load the drivers.

Sharing A Printer - New 64bit Windows 7 And An Old 32bit Vista PCs

I built it mainly for my 14yo to do school work and video games on rather to replace our aging desktop which is still used also. The old machine runs 32-bit Vista while the new one is 64-bit Win7, of course. In our reorganization we moved our Canon MP610 printer to be hooked up to the new machine, but it'd be great if we could share it amongst both pc's and my older son's new laptop. I've search and read lots of sites online, but can't really find a solution to get the old pc to be able to "see" the printer to share.

View tutorial videos of the great new features that Windows 7 includes. If you are already using the operating system, you can now learn more about it's powerful new features as well as brushing up on your general Windows skills.

Following are some descriptions for the tutorials, you will learn:-

Tutorial 1 - Introduction to the Desktop

In Windows 7 tutorial 1, we start at the very beginning of Windows 7 with an introduction to the Desktop, Start Menu and the all new Taskbar. New in Windows 7 is the improved Taskbar and the neater System Tray, which you'll see briefly in this video. Both of these new features will be explored in more detail in later tutorials too.

Tutorial 2 - Exploring the Start Menu

In Windows 7 tutorial 2, we explore the Windows 7 Start Menu. From the Start Menu, you can launch any programs installed on your PC and also search for pictures, videos and music. We'll also demonstrate how to "pin" your favourite programs to the Start Menu or Taskbar.

Because the Start Menu is used for launching virtually all the programs and tasks you do on your computer, it's very important to learn how to use it effectively.

Tutorial 3 - Windows in Windows 7

In Windows 7 tutorial 3, we take a look at working with windows. As you might imagine, this is a core skill to master if you want to become productive with your PC. While some of the material we show in this video will be familiar to those of you who have used previous versions of Windows, Windows 7 brings some handy new tricks of its own which will help you to be more productive when using your PC. Three of these new features are Aero Peek, Aero Snap and Aero Shake. The video will demonstrate how these new features make it easer than ever before to work with multiple windows.

Tutorial 4 - Navigating your personal folders

In Windows 7 tutorial 4, we'll demonstrate how to work with files and folders, specifically the personal folders on your computer. Every user account on a Windows 7 machine has several personal folders designed for storing documents, music, pictures, videos and other data you work with. (We'll also be covering user accounts in a later tutorial). Being able to navigate around these folders is an important skill to master. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of folders and files on your PC.

Tutorial 5 - Organizing files and folders using the context menu

In Windows 7 tutorial 5, we'll be using the context menu to move and copy files and folders. The context menu appears when you right click and as its name suggests, it changes depending on what context or situation it appears under.

When you have completed this tutorial, you should be confident with copying and moving files and folders around your PC and understand how to create your own folders and organize content on your machine.

Tutorial 6 - Working with multiple files and folders

In Windows 7 tutorial 6, we'll show you how you can work with multiple files and folders at once. As you become more proficient using your PC, you may start to create and download a large number of files. When dealing with large collections of files, being able to work efficiently with multiple files and folders can be a huge time saver.

Tutorial 7 - Using libraries

In Windows 7 tutorial 7, you'll learn about a powerful new feature of Windows 7, namely libraries. Libraries let you view files on your computer from a content centric rather than location centric perspective. When sifting through vast amounts of files, libraries can be very useful. You'll see what we mean when you watch the video.

Tutorial 8 - Folder properties

In Windows 7 tutorial 8, we continue to explore the many features of Windows Explorer by taking a look at folder properties. We'll mainly be concentrating on how to customize folder types to make exploring your computer even easier.

Tutorial 9 - Folder options

In Windows 7 tutorial 9, we'll show you how to customize Windows Explorer and your folders even more by using the folder options window. You'll discover how to customize folder views and peek into the hidden files and folders on your PC.

Tutorial 10 - Using the Recycle Bin

In Windows 7 tutorial 10, we'll take a look at the Recycle Bin folder. The Recycle Bin is where files and folders are sent when you remove them. It acts like a safety net against deleting data by accident. In the video we'll show you how to recover files from the Recycle Bin, empty the bin and also change its size. You will also see a few exceptions where files are not sent to the Recycle Bin and are deleted immediately instead.

Tutorial 11 - Advanced Start Menu options

In Windows 7 tutorial 11, you will see some advanced techniques for working with and customizing the Start Menu. You'll learn about the privacy options for the Start Menu and how to clear recently used programs as well as how to personalize the options available on the right of the menu.

Tutorial 12 - Exploring your computer with 'Computer'

In Windows 7 tutorial 12, We'll look at "Computer". This is the top level view of all the drives and storage devices attached to your PC. From Computer you can open and navigate to any file or folder on your PC or on network drives or removable drives.

Tutorial 13 - Taskbar jump lists and customization

In Windows 7 tutorial 13, it's time to explore the new Windows 7 Taskbar further. We'll look at jump lists on the Taskbar and take a look at some customization options. Want to go back to the old style Taskbar with labels as well as icons? Want to add toolbars to your Taskbar? We'll show you how to do all that and more in this video.

Tutorial 14 - The Notification Area (System Tray)

In Windows 7 tutorial 14, we'll take a look at the much improved Notification Area (or System Tray as it is commonly referred to). The Notification Area has become increasingly cluttered on many systems as more and more programs place their notification icons at the bottom of the screen. Windows 7 streamlines the Notification Area and significantly reduces clutter, as you'll see in this video.

Tutorial 15 - Search is everywhere in Windows 7 too

In Windows 7 tutorial 15, it's time to search out the search options in Windows 7 and show you how you can quickly find files and folders on your computer. Adjusting to the new, more complex search options in Windows 7 can be a shock for Windows XP users, but with a little practise and our handy tutorial here, we're sure you'll be searching like a pro in no time.

Tutorial 16 - The low down on User Account Controls in Windows 7

In Windows 7 tutorial 16, it's time to take a look at the often unfairly criticized User Account Control security mechanism. User Account Controls (UAC) were introduced in Windows Vista and were immediately unpopular with users migrating from Windows XP. However, they drastically improved security and when used in conjunction with limited user accounts, can actually save a great deal of time, as we'll demonstrate in the video.

Tutorial 17 - Devices and Printers

In Windows 7 tutorial 17, we demonstrate the new Devices and Printers section of the control panel. This new feature of Windows 7 aims to make it easier to work with and troubleshoot peripheral devices, such as printers, monitors, external storage devices and game controllers. Instead of trying to find your device in a big long list, Devices and Printers tries to assign an icon to it which represents the actual device more clearly.
