This Computer Is Not Running Genuine Windows - Error: 0x8004fe21
Oct 10, 2012
I have a computer that's 3-4 years old now and in the last couple of weeks has been giving me a popup alert saying 'This computer is not running genuine Windows' with and error # 0x8004fe21.I have called Microsoft telephone activations and was asked to run 'slui.exe 3' from the command prompt and re-enter the Windows product key (from the computer case), which I did and it successfully activated. I restarted and everything initially seemed fine, but now the message has returned. The MGADiag report (below) shows a number of 'File Mismatch' errors - but I'm not sure what to do about it.

On a Dell PC (Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit), I had a hard drive failure. I bought an identical size (1 TB) hard drive, restored a backup drive image (Norton Ghost) and successfully booted the PC (after running Windows DVD to repair bootrec.)
Everything is working fine EXCEPT that every day now I get "Not Running Genuine Windows" with 0x8004FE21 error message and of course can't run Windows update either.
I initially updated Dell BIOS and other what I thought were related updates from Dell website. Still same problem. I contacted Microsoft and they confirmed my COA sticker on PC from Dell is authentic. Still getting message each day.

I upgraded the hard drive in my Acer Aspire notebook a month ago, successfully activated Windows and was running fine until a couple of days ago. Now I am getting the seemingly common (in this forum) Windows not Genuine error. I have attached the output from MGADiag below.
For reference, the Acer Aspire notebook is 3-years old, came preinstalled with Vista together with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it launched, which I installed 2 years ago. Running fine the last 3 years.

Installed the RC with a key from a blog as I lost my first key when I downloaded it.
I keep getting an error saying "This computer is not running genuine Windows" in the control panel and I can't activate Windows 7.
I am not trying to pirate anything, I just want to test out the RC before I buy Windows 7. Have I done something wrong during the install process?

I recently bought this used laptop, it came with Windows 7 64 bit installed, but no discs. I do have the original disc and activation code for Windows Vista 32 bit. I would like to keep this version of windows, actually I dont care but I dont want to have to reinstall all of my software. Is there some way for me to pay for an activation code from Microsoft without having to reinstall windows and everything?
Here's my WGA stuff: Code:

While booting today, I received a notice that my copy of Windows is not genuine. I have had my copy of Windows 7 installed for months and I haven't done anything drastic to my system to warrant this. The notification reason is 0xC004F063 when I run slmgr.vbs /dlv.

This weekend, I bought and installed a new SSD into my computer. I re-installed my Windows 7 (Home Premium x64 OEM) onto it, (fresh install, no migrate) and immediately formatted my mechanical HDD. I went into my BIOS and changed boot priority. (I set it to CD first, because I was re-installing from the disc, followed by my SSD.) I changed BIOS Drive positions, with my SSD as #1 and HDD as #2. On my Mobo, my SSD is plugged into SATA3 Port #1. My HDD is plugged into SATA2 Port #1. As soon as I got Windows installed, I started re-installing programs, setting up my admin account, and generally resetting my system, theme, Rainmeter, etc. Then I started getting messages that I wasnt running Genuine Windows. I clicked the Resolve Online button, and downloaded the authenticator software, which told me I needed to buy a copy of Windows. This irritated me, because I am running a key I bought legitimately, and I have the packaging and CoA. I called Tech Support. I spoke with a very helpful gentleman. He checked out my product key. He had me activate my product, which I hadnt done on my new install yet, and I got a Genuine tag to appear under the Windows Experience Rating in My Computer>Properties. He said I was good to go. Now, 48hrs later, Im getting the "Not Genuine" message again. I have a screenshot of Windows claiming to be Genuine and Not Genuine at the same time. (See Attached photo.) I have installed a lot of updates since my re-install, so I do seem to be getting those. So, although I formatted the original Mechanical HDD, I have to assume there are some residual Windows files still on it, (but I'm not finding any) because apparently Windows thinks its running on two machines now, I assume. Im also getting a strange message in my Boot process, which asks me if I want to Boot into Windows 7, or into Windows 7. A 30sec timer then appears and chooses the highlighted option, and continues to boot normally. This computer is custom built, and I purchased an OEM version of windows separately from the builder - legit, physical packaging - and I opened the packaging and installed it myself about a year ago. It has been fine until I installed the new drive this weekend.

My sister's computer has been running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for more than two years. We obtained the copy from Amazon. The copy we have appears in a genuine box, with COA with interwoven holographic strip, and holographic cds. We went away camping for a week, turned on the computer on return, and the screen went black when the computer did the update check. Error code is 0xC004F200, and optional update delivery no longer works. There is an error code down the right corner, notification that build 7601, windows no longer genuine, etc.
This copy was only ever used once, and on this machine, and obtained for this machine. It has never been installed on anything else. We checked the product key via computer properties, and it said that the product key suddenly no longer matched the product key on the box/cds. On trying to change it, a dialog box came up and said that the product key has been blacklisted. We researched this, and the net said to contact microsoft.
BTW, we ran the diagnostic tool as admin.

Hi there, right now I have a non genuine version of Windows 7 Ultimate installed, I'm looking to replace it with a genuine copy of Windows 7 home premium. Could I do this with an upgrade disc or would I need to buy the whole OS? I'm trying to avoid paying 200$ to activate Ultimate.

I've been running Win7 Ultimate x64 on a new I7 Quad core system for just 1 month. Bought the system from a legitimate OEM with whom I've dealt for more than 9 years. Win 7 activated with no problems the day I rec'd the system. This morning, for the first time, I rec'd the message that my Win 7 version may not be genuine, and asking if I want to activate or pursue the issue.
Thinking the message may be a result of spyware (even though the system is well protected) I bypassed the message, and my desktop finally loaded without event. I then checked the control panel, which showed that I had a genuine activated copy of Win 7. Have all the current OS updates.
What's going on here? Obviously this message is spurious. Will it be a problem, and what caused it?

I am using an Acer Aspire 5738G, which originally came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Later I got the free Windows 7 Home Premium update disc and never encountered any problem.
But since the last 1 month or so, I've been getting this 'Windows not genuine' message on a random basis. Microsoft Security Essentials says that it will disable itself within 30 days if the issue is not resolved. When I click on 'Resolve issue', an IE window is opened and takes me to Microsoft's website. When I do all the steps explained, everything goes back to normal and my Windows is again considered as genuine.

I am getting an error message when I run new games. With older games, I find no trouble. I've updated my DX to 11 and updated by graphics card driver.
Computer Specs:
-Intel dual E2130 2.0 GHz
-ATI Radeon x1550 256MB
-1GB RAM
Even though I do not meet the minimum requirements of the game, my friend is running it under an weaker spec under lower performance options and it is running smoothly.

I have Windows 7 on a 30GB SSD, and a 2TB HD I keep most of my games and whatnot on. I want to learn Objective C programming and Cocoa Touch for developing Apps. But to the point, I need to run the SDK. I can't do that on Windows (I think) and buying a Mac just to learn programming is out of the question. I may be able to build a hackintosh, but I'd rather not. That being said, I want to know if I can create a Dual Boot system where Windows 7 is my main/default OS, and have a separate Hard drive for the OS x leopard. I've seen some tutorials stating on how to partition ONE drive. I don't want that. I want two separate drives. One only for OS X, and the other only for Windows 7. Is this possible? I'm willing to buy a 1 TB drive and get it going. Have Windows 7 and OSX. Want both on my PC without having to partition one drive. Want separate drives for each OS.

I was wondering if there was an easy fix for this. I just got back to my computer and this error showed up in the corner. Now I don't have any illegal software on this computer plus I haven't reformatted my computer at all. This copy of Windows is the same copy it came with when I bought the computer.

I own a Dell XPS M1710 running Windows7 (5 years old). The graphics card has already been replaced once (after 1 year) due to a well know heating problem (made tolerable by cooling pad). I get Blue screen and Memory Parity Error some of the times I start up but mostly it freezes at the black screen point. Memory check gives all clear and I have tried swapping out all of the RAM with (working) modules but still get the same error message. Tried updating the graphics driver, no change. Tried disabling the Graphics device in Device manager and this had a slightly different blue screen but the same basic result.I suspect the graphics card Nvidia Go 7950 GTX because the fault first happened while playing an MP4 file.

My Gateway laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) recently crashed, and when I rebooted it, it displayed this: Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The boot selection failed because a required devices is inaccessible.
The thing is, I don't have a Windows installation disc! I was just browsing the internet when my laptop crashed, and now I can't do anything; repair your computer, safe mode, boot from last known good setting, etc. all result in the same error screen.
