"The Directory Is Not Empty"
Nov 27, 2010
I'm recovering from a nasty hard drive crash and I need to delete some corrupted directories. I'm encountering a problem when using Rmdir(rd) on a specific folder. In an elevated command prompt I type,
RD /S /Q "G:FolderFolderTargetDirectory"
but even with the /s switch I still get the "The directory is not empty." message for each subfolder within the directory. I have also tried shift+delete and deleting in safe mode to no avail.

I erased a TV serie and some musc and subtitles off a DVD-RW, then proceeded to replace it with the same show but with subs in Spanish. Guess what? It says it has only 260MB free, and won't let me burn the show to it!

I recently got a new PC it has Windows 7 Pro 64Bit OS. My old XP box finally died. I have my music drive which is external USB 500 GB drive Seagate Free Agent drive. I used in on my old system. I have about 110GB of music on it. It is my main music drive. I got some new songs that i wanted to add to the drive. I tried to make a new directory and I received a message saying that I don't have permission to create a folder. I tried creating a new folder within my music directory. I can create a new folder within the root of the drive but I cannot create a new directory where I want it. I am an admin on the PC so I even made sure that I was added as a user on the drive when I set permissions and sharing.

I moved a external USB drive formatted NTFS from an XP system to a Windows 7 system, and it will permanently stay on the Windows 7 system. I can't get any write or change access on the USB drive folders or files. I cannot change permissions in advanced mode, and it lists the file/directory owner as unknown in the group or user names box. It complains that I don't have administrator control, however I am logged in as administrator. How can I take ownership & change permissions on this drive?

After I make a full system backup in Win 7 I move to the WindowsImageBackup directory. I try to move down the chain to the directory named after my computer. But when I try to move down the chain I get an "You do not have permission" message. I am an administrator and I am able to get around the message but I'm just wondering if there is something I can do to not make the message pop up each time.

i set up an OU in AD that contains shortcuts to various shares on various servers. instead of having 10+ shortcut icons on their desktops, my w2k users could access all network shortcuts from one shortcut. plus, when the location of a share moves to a different server, i don't have to delete old shortcuts and create new ones on 30+ desktops. in xp, the directory icon went away so i couldn't create a shortcut to the OU. i discovered copying the dsfolder.dll icon to xp fixed the problem. can a desktop shortcut to an OU be achieved in Windows 7?

I wanted to have copies of some of the intrinsic Windows 7 operating system command line .exe files located on another drive and directory. When I run C:WindowsSystem32Ping.exe /? at an Adminstrator's command prompt, it runs fine. If I copy this .exe to X:Tempping.exe (X: is on the same hard drive on the same computer), it will not run at an Adminstrator's command prompt. The file on X: has full permissions. I am running Norton Internet Security.

I recently purchased my PC components which include a Corsair 60GB Force Series SSD to use as a boot and application drive. In order to maximize the free space on the SSD I want to move the User Directory from the SSD to the HDD. After looking into this I have found numerous articles which suggest numerous ways to accomplish this.Nearly all of them have people saying that it may cause this or that to go wrong. So what options do I really have? Which method is best (on the list, or found elsewhere)? Is it even worth it (i.e. how much space does the user directory really use)?

Unzip/installation instructions I have require command line inputs to do this. when it comes to DOS but am pretty familiar with Linux command line - at any rate I don't know how to change directory in DOS to view the USB directory. Stuff I've tried ("J" is the drive of my USB):

The one he has is a 32 bit with Windows 7 and Mcafee Antivirus. There are some free aplications such as a cd/dvd cover software that he installed on his old laptop with Vista that worked ok. On the newer one they seem to install but theres no Desktop icon that he requests and in All Programs the folder is there but shows as empty. In uninstall or change the files are there. I thought it may be User Account control so i suggested he disables it and try to download again but its still the same. He also tried to install trials of other things with the same result. I installed the applications he wants on my Vista with no problems so i immagine the problem is with Windows 7 security somehow.

I have a couple of Windows 7 machines that have suddenly had several empty folders appear in the root directory of the c drive.
The odd part about it, they are all labelled <computername>.1234 or four to five seemingly random numbers. They aren't a jumble of hex numbers that I'd expect from Windows Update in XP (which is pretty much the only thing google has spat out for me on this issue). I'm trying to find out if this is a virus or what sort of software might be creating these folders. I did a full MBAM of the system, as well as a full GMER scan, and gave it a shot with TDSSKiller as well a Sophos AV and they have all found nothing. I also took a look using process explorer and autoruns and I didn't find anything suspicious as far as I could tell so I don't think it's malicious. I just want to figure out what could be creating them, or if anyone had heard of this issue.

A client brought in a Dell laptop with a missing driver. A tech downloaded a driver onto a flash drive. I'm not sure of where the driver came from. When the flash drive was put into the computer it started loading something and the tech pulled it out and restarted the unit. After reboot the tech noticed that the start menu was empty. Typical of a hidden files infection. After a second reboot the unit goes straight to startup repair. I pulled the HDD out of the unit and hooked it up to another computer with an enclosure. The drive reads as 99.9% free space. All of the the folders are there but they all show as empty (0 bytes). The recovery partition is intact and the drive passes Dell diags. Any ideas on recovering the data? I'm sure I could just restore it but the client needs the data.

The manage add-ons folder is empty. There are a variety of ways to get to that folder and I have tried them all. There is nothing in it. No toolbars, no search providers, and no Accelerators. It doesn't even contain the InPrivate filtering link. What's more the navigation Pane is also empty.
It's odd because the most common add-ons that shoud be accessable there seem to work OK. Adobe Flash, Java ..etc. Everything is updated. PC: Windows 7 x64, IE8,

I'm having a very strange issue after I did a boot time virus scan in Avast to remove a virus. Avast seems to have removed the virus just fine, however I can't get Windows to show directories or files any more.If I open Windows Explorer and go to C:Users it says the folder is empty. However if I right click and select properties, it calculates the folder as 10.8 GB. I can still log in fine and run software etc. This problem isn't just in the C:Users folder. My library directories show empty and I was immediately afraid I lost all of my pictures because searching for *.jpg on my system yields no results. However, I remembered the exact path to one of the file names and sure enough it opened the picture. For example when I enter the exact address in Windows Explorer:C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011MyPic.jpg it opens. But if I list C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011 it says "folder is empty". One more thing to mention is that I tried browsing files through the command prompt. Whenever I try to do a directory listing with the dir command I get the error: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 2AEE-FDC8. File not found. However, I can still cd into existing directories that I know exist. I just can't list the directories or files. Unfortunately I upgraded to Windows 7 SP1 right after this happened because I thought it might fix the problem. Now I can't do a system restore to the point where my computer wasn't having this problem.
