I just downloaded Windows 7 and transfered over my program files from windows.old to the program files in windows 7. The problem i'm having is that start->all programs is empty, it isn't populating from the program files folder. Is there a way to tell the computer to search for programs and repopulate the all programs?

I erased a TV serie and some musc and subtitles off a DVD-RW, then proceeded to replace it with the same show but with subs in Spanish. Guess what? It says it has only 260MB free, and won't let me burn the show to it!

I just reinstalled windows 7(32bit) and my windows.old file, which doesn't contain anything in it except for empty folders, still has size to it. Does anyone know what the deal is with this? Never had this happen to me.The show hidden files/folders option is ticked and still shows nothing. Is this a glitch?

The one he has is a 32 bit with Windows 7 and Mcafee Antivirus. There are some free aplications such as a cd/dvd cover software that he installed on his old laptop with Vista that worked ok. On the newer one they seem to install but theres no Desktop icon that he requests and in All Programs the folder is there but shows as empty. In uninstall or change the files are there. I thought it may be User Account control so i suggested he disables it and try to download again but its still the same. He also tried to install trials of other things with the same result. I installed the applications he wants on my Vista with no problems so i immagine the problem is with Windows 7 security somehow.

I have a couple of Windows 7 machines that have suddenly had several empty folders appear in the root directory of the c drive.
The odd part about it, they are all labelled <computername>.1234 or four to five seemingly random numbers. They aren't a jumble of hex numbers that I'd expect from Windows Update in XP (which is pretty much the only thing google has spat out for me on this issue). I'm trying to find out if this is a virus or what sort of software might be creating these folders. I did a full MBAM of the system, as well as a full GMER scan, and gave it a shot with TDSSKiller as well a Sophos AV and they have all found nothing. I also took a look using process explorer and autoruns and I didn't find anything suspicious as far as I could tell so I don't think it's malicious. I just want to figure out what could be creating them, or if anyone had heard of this issue.

A client brought in a Dell laptop with a missing driver. A tech downloaded a driver onto a flash drive. I'm not sure of where the driver came from. When the flash drive was put into the computer it started loading something and the tech pulled it out and restarted the unit. After reboot the tech noticed that the start menu was empty. Typical of a hidden files infection. After a second reboot the unit goes straight to startup repair. I pulled the HDD out of the unit and hooked it up to another computer with an enclosure. The drive reads as 99.9% free space. All of the the folders are there but they all show as empty (0 bytes). The recovery partition is intact and the drive passes Dell diags. Any ideas on recovering the data? I'm sure I could just restore it but the client needs the data.

I recently had some issues with my month old Dell N5050 Laptop that required I do a System Restore, After discovering that for some odd reason all my Restore files were gone, I restored the computer to Factory, I set up the Restore option, saved a Restore and made sure to keep some restores, about a week or two later here we are, and all my restore files are gone, I wanted to restore my computer to fix an issue I just posted in here, but I can't, and I really don't have the patience to do another Restore to factory

The manage add-ons folder is empty. There are a variety of ways to get to that folder and I have tried them all. There is nothing in it. No toolbars, no search providers, and no Accelerators. It doesn't even contain the InPrivate filtering link. What's more the navigation Pane is also empty.
It's odd because the most common add-ons that shoud be accessable there seem to work OK. Adobe Flash, Java ..etc. Everything is updated. PC: Windows 7 x64, IE8,

I'm having a very strange issue after I did a boot time virus scan in Avast to remove a virus. Avast seems to have removed the virus just fine, however I can't get Windows to show directories or files any more.If I open Windows Explorer and go to C:Users it says the folder is empty. However if I right click and select properties, it calculates the folder as 10.8 GB. I can still log in fine and run software etc. This problem isn't just in the C:Users folder. My library directories show empty and I was immediately afraid I lost all of my pictures because searching for *.jpg on my system yields no results. However, I remembered the exact path to one of the file names and sure enough it opened the picture. For example when I enter the exact address in Windows Explorer:C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011MyPic.jpg it opens. But if I list C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011 it says "folder is empty". One more thing to mention is that I tried browsing files through the command prompt. Whenever I try to do a directory listing with the dir command I get the error: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 2AEE-FDC8. File not found. However, I can still cd into existing directories that I know exist. I just can't list the directories or files. Unfortunately I upgraded to Windows 7 SP1 right after this happened because I thought it might fix the problem. Now I can't do a system restore to the point where my computer wasn't having this problem.

I've updated my mobo's BIOS today and the new version adds support for PCEEv4, so I get the Dolby tab working, but the enhancements all disappeared. I know for a fact they work, since I had them before changing the BIOS. I can't really rollback the bios as I pretty much need the SSD updates on the BIOS.I've reinstalled the drivers about 3 times already. I've tried from both the motherboard's page: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z68X-UD3-B3 (rev. 1.0)And from Realtek's page. Neither worked as far as giving me the enhancements back. I get this shiny new Dolby thing that is quite frankly, useless. It uses only 3 speakers out of the 5.1 system and I'd much rather have the enhancements back so I can use the audio fill to get all my speakers going when there's a stereo stream.
Any suggestions on how I can fix this? Except for rolling back the BIOS, that is.All the DTS dlls appear as installed and part of the driver. The mic enhancements still work just fine. I have RAVBg64.exe starting with /forpcee4 toggle. I was wondering if there was perhaps a toggle that ignored the PCEE(Dolby tab) thing and went for windows enhancements instead. The enhancements also disappeared from the Realtek HD audio manager, so no luck there either. It doesn't even show an enhancement tab there, so I'm assuming it's loading wrong to favor the PCEE thing.

My hard disk is corrupted and it causes frequent blue screen and restarts. I bought a new hard disk and transferred the data to the new hard disk. While transferring the files from old hard disk to new hard disk, the pc still encounters frequent blue screen and restarts, causing the data transfer to suddenly stop when it restarts.
Now I have installed the new hard disk and everything works fine.
The problem is when I open some word and excel files, the files are blank (like a new document) or show me a error message. This is probably caused due to the sudden restart while I was transferring files. I remembered some of the corrupted files are being transferred when the pc restarts by itself.

In the Windows Explorer, if I click on "Libraries" nothing shows up - it appears empty. However, if I search for a file I know to be in Libraries, I can find it via the search window. If I look at its location in the search, it certainly looks like the file is in the right location... I can even right-click on the file and" go to the location". When I do so, the window opens and is still empty. The location is, for example, LibrariesDocumentsMy Documents.
If I navigate up one level to "Documents" by clicking on it in the address bar, this too is empty, even though clearly there was "My Documents" there just a second ago.
I think the problem happened when I tried to view hidden files in the Libraries folder.

I have tried every conceivable way to get Explorer to let me view my empty drives under Computer. They show when there's a disk in them. They show in the reading pane, they just won't show up as empty drives in the Nav pane. I have tried deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry. Un checking the "Hide empty drives" in Folder options, adding a (1) to the registry settting "Hide drives with no Media". That setting seems to change itself back to (0) all the time. I am totally at a loss getting the empty drives to show themselves in the Nav pane.

I am running Windows 7 on a desktop. I use it mostly for browsing and high end gaming. My recent installs have all been pretty safe (CDs from game companies), so I don't think it's an infection...though if it were, it's a pretty mundane one.
Recently (last couple of weeks), whenever I reboot or cold start my machine, a New Folder(2) is created on my desktop. The first time I noticed it was right around the time I was copying a lot of documents to my machine for a new home purchase. I was trying to keep track of all the folders I had to create, but I know for a fact that as I was creating, I wasn't keeping up with naming conventions. I really hadn't noticed that it was being recreated every time until I VERY deliberately removed it about two days ago. Until then, I thought I had just kept forgetting to remove it.
This evening, while booting, I took particular care and watched my task list while starting. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (though my computer brilliance has burned itself out over the last few decades), and hence my request for information here.
There appears to be no other issues with my machine (except for the occasional bass voice coming from my speakers saying "Skynet lives"...that's a joke).

There was a typical long list until recently, and now they're all gone. I was looking for my scanner which isn't being recognised, although the printer (it's an all-in-one HP photosmart 8180) is recognised and will print. I've run driver updates, registry cleanups, and system restore but with no effect.

I'm a photographer with 3 old-tower-based PCs that I look after myself, all with Win7 and SATA2 disks. Naturally, I need ever-larger storage space. To that end I moved all the data from a 1Tb disk to a 2Tb disk, then removed the 1Tb disk intending to replace it with a 3Tb disk. However, without the 1Tb disk, this PC would not boot, and the repair disk couldn't locate any Windows OS. But the OS is on another disk entirely (that remained connected throughout all this). I re-connected the 1Tb disk and the PC booted just fine. On inspection I find that this 1Tb disk - that I thought was entirely empty - has on it a 100MB System Reserved Partition that might relate to the MS back-up system that I've never used (as Win7 seems to point to this, although telling me it's not big enough to use for a backup!) By assigning a letter to this 100MB partition, I can see that there's a handful of (normally hidden) files and a directory relating to booting the PC. I therefore conclude that the PC is booting from this partition on the 1Tb disk, even though the OS is on a separate disk. How do I get the PC to boot from the 'OS' disk so that I can exchange the offending 1Tb drive with a 3Tb one? Or is there some other solution? Maybe I just copy this partition to the new disk? (BTW, I've already registered the 3Tb disk on the system.
