After an update install from Vista everything seems to be working perfectly EXCEPT none of my existing program are listed in the Start-All Program--it is completely empty! I find I can pin programs to the menu and if I install a new program it does show up. I have no problems accessing my programs from the desktop icons. I want my All Programs back!!
View 9 RepliesI have windows 7 home premium 64bit this has to be one of the nastiest viruses i have ever gotten and it kept telling me my hard drive clusters were messed up(laptop is barely 3 weeks old) and after i rebooted it, a program called PC performance and stability analysis kept running. I removed it though(maybe!notsure) using mbam and sas in safe mode. and ran both programs twice. after this everything was missing in the start menu and programs list. as well as the desktop shorcuts and my wallpaper was gone just a black screen. after reading over other topics of people have the same problem, i found unhide.exe which helped somewhat it found all my documents and such but not much. another topic i found explained how to use systemlook.exe and it keeps saying file not found and i have no idea of what do next? also im not even sure this trojan is gone, beacuse some programs get errors when they open up.
View 10 Replies View RelatedMy antivirus software prompted me to do a virus scan and after rebooting, I was no longer able to view any of my program files nor documents. I looked up at some posts and found that I had to one by one uncheck the "hidden" tab on the folders in the system. I was able to retrieve most of the files and programs, but not all of them. I still have a few programs that appear as "empty" on the start menu (i.e. Microsoft Office programs). Any other steps I should take to be able to launch all my programs in the Start Menu?

The problem i'm having is that start->all programs is empty, it isn't populating from the program files folder. Is there a way to tell the computer to search for programs and repopulate the all programs?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a custom PC for the past year and my main Windows 7 boot drive was giving my some aggravating problems. Board is an EVGA P67 SLI with a Crucial C300 128GB SSD as the main boot drive in the SATA3 location. I've seen MANY cases where people were having some slowing speeds with the drive and I finally came along with that problem as well, and since I only use the drive to boot up I figured a reformat would be a nice way to simply start over.
Regardless, I have 2 other mechanical hard drives one in which stores everything from Steam Games to Ventrilo and other software. The other is simply used for personal things like Pictures, Music, and Videos. My "Programs Drive" is simply like the "Program Files" of your typical C: drive really. Everything I can put on that one goes on that one and basically I use the SSD for the start up times since P67 doesn't support caching like the Z68s do.
My issue is, now that I've reformatted my main SSD drive when it comes to playing my games I'm only able to play whatever is through Steam. If it isn't through Steam then it simply doesn't run. Even when I actually try re-installing it again just for registry purposes it doesn't go through. Obviously my "Programs & Features" selection is a bit empty right now because nothing is registered on my main drive. Should probably look into doing that at some point as well with Steam and all of the installed games.
I am running Windows 7 on a desktop. I use it mostly for browsing and high end gaming. My recent installs have all been pretty safe (CDs from game companies), so I don't think it's an infection...though if it were, it's a pretty mundane one.
Recently (last couple of weeks), whenever I reboot or cold start my machine, a New Folder(2) is created on my desktop. The first time I noticed it was right around the time I was copying a lot of documents to my machine for a new home purchase. I was trying to keep track of all the folders I had to create, but I know for a fact that as I was creating, I wasn't keeping up with naming conventions. I really hadn't noticed that it was being recreated every time until I VERY deliberately removed it about two days ago. Until then, I thought I had just kept forgetting to remove it.
This evening, while booting, I took particular care and watched my task list while starting. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (though my computer brilliance has burned itself out over the last few decades), and hence my request for information here.
There appears to be no other issues with my machine (except for the occasional bass voice coming from my speakers saying "Skynet lives"...that's a joke).
I followed this thread [URL]to restore the items of the start menu. :thumbup2: However, I still have this isse of the folders in the All Programs section being empty.

View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).
McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.
This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.
When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

But the next day, without changing anything, some programs won't start correctly, to be more precise: their proccesses seem to start (or at least they show up on Task Manager, but consuming only a few KB of ram and no CPU) but no program window appears whatsoever. Sometimes rebooting the PC will stop this from happening, but not always.

So there are a few programs that do not respond whenever I launch them. It seems that the list is getting bigger... Now I cant login into steam, when I click the login button it starts 'not responding'. Same happens with some other soft.SFC scan says that there are some corrupted files but they cannot be fixed. I dont know whether that is the case or not, but what can I do about this

I cannot seem to start any x86 programs from their shortcuts, or exe files. The problem exists in both regular and safe mode. When I click the exe or shortcut, the process comes up in the task bar using a tiny amount of memory (~100K) and just sits there.
I CAN run any program from cmd using the start command (start path o.exe), and I also can run any x64 programs that I have installed. I have tried sfc /scannnow and chkdsk /r.
Also, if I add a program to the startup list (registry or startup folder) it starts up fine on boot.
I have a problem with my Windows 7. I bought a laptop in January and until yesterday it worked fine. All of a sudden, it wouldn't close my tabs in Firefox.Then it wouldn't open VLC Media Player, games, ... nothing. Not even the Configuration.
