System Thinks CTRL Key Is Pressed When It Isn't
Nov 2, 2011
I just bought a brand new laptop running Windows 7 64 bit 5 days ago. When typing, the computer suddenly acts as if the ctrl key is pressed when it isn't. Any letter typed will perform the action it would if the ctrl key is pressed. This can only be remedied by a complete reboot. I do not have sticky keys enabled.

my issue is as follows:
->Win 7 Pro
->Boots up shows "press ctrl+alt+del" screen
->Once this is pressed, the prompt for the password does not show (mouse moves not frozen)
->Unable to recover from rescue cd
After toiling with this issue for some time I found that when the computer is shut down properly, the next login does not show the password prompt. If the computer is shut down via a 5 second power-button press, the password prompt appears the next time the computer is turned on after the "start widows normally" dos screen. I had an older image of the os on a harddrive (replaced HD with solid state) that I used to "restore" from. The issue happened again some 6 days later. I can not keep restoring/backing up all the time as it is very time consuming (there is a lot of changing data on this computer and having to back up like this all the time is not a realistic solution).

Just bought a new Lenovo G770 5 days ago. Running Win7 64bit. The system repeatedly thinks the CTRL key is being pressed when it isn't. In the middle of typing a sentence, suddenly every letter I type performs the associated ctrl key action. The only remedy is a complete reboot (and loss of data in the process). I have googled this problem and it seems pretty common, but all I've found are a lot of suggestions (some of them too technical) and no clear solutions. Some of the non-useful suggestions I've gotten already: "Wedge the CTRL key up" ~ it is not physically stuck; I have not even touched the key when this happens. If the key were simply physically stuck, a reboot would not solve the problem. "Clean your keyboard" ~ the keyboard is not dirty; it's 5 days old.

I'm currently connected to the internet through a wireless network to post this thread. If I open the wireless network connections, under the list of network names, it says I'm connected. However, the taskbar icon shows no connection, and Windows recognizes no connection if, for example, I go to the Network and Sharing Center. This image shows what I mean. This problem applies to every wireless network, not just specific ones. This has been going on for almost a year, and hasn't really caused any problems, so I paid it no notice. However, I'm now discovering some problems. Since Windows thinks I'm not connected to a network, I can't do any of the following things:Create or join a homegroup Stream media to an XBox 360 Change network security settings (home/private/public) Pass Ubisoft DRM checks for a network connection?
System:
Gateway NV5909h
Windows 7 home premium x64 (OEM)
Atheros AR5B93 wireless network adapter
Intel core i3-330m

My husband recently partitioned my laptop disc drive so that he could install Linux in one partition. He has since changed is mind and will at some point give the entire disc back to Windows 7. Meanwhile, now I get that "Windows is not genuine" message frequently, where we didn't get it before. Also when I go to System, it shows me a product key but tells me that W7 isn't activated and that I should activate it now, and/or change the product key.I'm sure the W7 is genuine although we bought the laptop second hand from a neighbor and don't have the original install cd or dvd or whatever it was.Should I click on activate or change product key or what?Except for the annoying message coming up frequently, the computer works fine and I'm afraid of killing my system if I make the wrong move.

my computer is an HP envy 14 that came preinstalled with windows 7 x64. I was negligent enough to forget to make a reinstall disk, which the computer came without. I dual booted linux on my computer, and for some reason that stopped my windows from booting. So, I used the reinstall disk from my kind sister's computer (a Dell latitude E6140) and set about going from there. It was 32bit, but it worked fine for a few months, but then windows said that my software wasn't genuine, which i know it is. I looked through all of the forums i frequent, but nothing came up that helped. I've tried sfc /scannow, a simple chkdsk, more reboots than I can count, updated my bios, checked my drivers, and finally used some program called Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (1.9.0027.0) This is what it gave me:

Ethernet cable err message thinks not plugged, tried everything...even went to store and got external ethernet adapter, nothing. Checked BIOS settings, etc. Tried restore to 30 days ago, tried reinstalling ethernet drivers. Tried different cables, different slots, you name it--I've tried. Finally did a restore to factory default and still Local Area Connection still doesn't connect, thinks not plugged. Did some reading, discovered the CMOS battery dead, replaced it with a new one. Was able to connect to internet, do download, reboot, get on iternet maybe an hour and then, AGAIN, back to the error message cannot connect, cable not plugged..

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my 64 bit vista PC. When I am prompted to choose which Os I want to install I am given a list of Windows 7 86 bit OS' and 64 bit Os' to choose from. I click Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and click next. It thinks for awhile then says it can't install a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit computer, but it is a 64 bit OS.

Unless I have speakers or headphones plugged in, my computer gives me the red "X" over my sound icon in my system tray, and anything that involves sound won't work. This is annoying because I don't always want to listen to sound at work, but I still need to be able to play things that have sound while I listen to music from another source.I guess I could just find a wire to plug into the headphone jack (yup, that works) but that seems silly.

I reinstalled Windows 7 on my laptop yesterday (a recovery reinstall, not a clean one). The install worked fine, I'm able to boot up and use all my programs again no prob, but when I attempt to go into Safe Mode, it thinks Windows hasn't completed the install. While the message "Setup is starting services" is on the screen, a popup appears saying "Windows cannot complete installation in Safe Mode. To continue installing Windows, restart the computer"I'm thinking there's got to be a simple registry key fix for this but am having a bear of a time finding anything applicable online.I don't have an urgent need to use Safe Mode, btw, just doesn't seem right not having it available should I need to

I have a Deltaco USB bluetooth adapter that I want to use to connect a wiimote to my computer to play games with. But when I plug the adapter in, the computer acts as if the up arrow-key is being constantly pressed down, making it scroll upwards or flip through options constantly. Nothing short of unplugging the USB-adapter makes it stop. This is terribly annoying. When I was using a evaluation version of Blue Soleil this problem went away when I fiddled with the wiimote.
Now I'm using Toshibas Bluetooth Stack for Windows though, and it wont go away at all. The wiimote works, but I can't do anything on the computer at all due to this.

I'm having trouble with my laptop's keyboard, specifically with letter x.I press it once and nothing happens.. but if I immediatly press it again, it writes the letter. This works almost like when you open a folder on the pc. You need to click two times quickly to open it.I tried running the Safe mode and writing and it worked perfectly! At first I thought it was just dirt or a piece of something that was trapped under the x key but I removed it and nothing..

I work in a school environment and have come across an intermittent, non-user specific and non-machine specific issue. Sometimes when people log on and start typing it will open up a piece of software, and always the same one and the same 'A' key on the keyboard. It is not a huge problem, you can minimise the program and it wont keep opening up, or you can log off and back on again to cure the problem. I am just curious if anyone has seen this before, or maybe has an idea how we can prevent this. I have search many forums for similar problems people have experienced.

The only way to wake the computer is by hitting the power button on the case.

if I keep ctrl button pressed and then click and drag with left mouse button (selecting text or using photoshop) this drag is sometimes "sticky" - when I finally release the mouse button system does not stop dragging. It behaves as I would still hold the left mouse button pressed... To release it I need to click again.

If I drag the print options box out of the way to the right side of the screen. The print option box doesn't print, I get the screen print I requested.

I would like to change the wording on the Windows 7 logon page from "PressCTRL+ALT+DELETE to unlock this computer" to "Press CTRL+ALT+INSERT to unlock this computer". My company uses a lot of VMware View desktops and it's tedious to continually inform users of the keystrokes. I have searched through the forums here and cannot find the file that I need to configure. I have downloaded Resource Hacker and love it but I just need the file name.

I am currently traveling for work and I am using my personal, HP laptop to connect back to my office, via Cisco VPN. When connected to the tunnel, I am able to launch MSTSC to access my machine back at the office without issue on that end.The problem I have noticed is that, when switching back and forth between my remote desktop session and my local desktop, the operating system seems to think that the Windows key is pressed on my local keyboard. So, when typing any hotkeys that would be active, such as "u," "e," or either of the "up" or "down" keys, Windows responds by launching Explorer, Ease of Access, minimizing/maximizing the active window and so on.I have done several searches on the web and found that I am not alone in this issue, but I have yet to find any type of resolution. I am unaware as to whether or not Microsoft knows that this issue exists. The operating system on my laptop is Windows 7 Pro and the OS on the machine I am connected to through remote desktop is Windows 7 Enterprise. According to some of the links I've found on the web, this has also occurred when the local OS is XP and the remote OS is 7.
