Sharing With Others On Same Computer?

Jun 5, 2012

I got windows 7 about 5 months ago and this sharing thins is about to make me want to find a good XP computer. When I first set it up I couldn't access but few of my files. I have read all I can find as well ask questions on forums. I have finally got it where I can most of the time see my own files. THEN yesterday I downloaded a jpg file from my cell phone to the computer. The image is side ways so I went to rotate it clockwise and the computer says I don't have permission to this file. I messed with it 30 minutes and could never get where I can edit it. Now, mind you it is in a folder and other files in that folder I can edit. I finally deceided to try to save as in another folder? It let me do that and from there I could rotate it. This makes no sense to me. How can I make all the files on this dang computer be available to me or anyone who is on my computer? Who ever made this sharing thing this way must be paranoid and trying to hide something from his wife. My life is an open book whoever is smart enough to get in my computer can surely see all my files anyway. All this is doing is keeping me from my own files.

File Sharing Between OS's On Same Computer?

Dec 4, 2011

I'm trying to share files between my Mac OS and my Windows 7 OS. I have both OS's on my laptop and I want to make it where I can easily transfer files between each OS. I have googled this but have found only file sharing on the same network but with different computers, not dual boot.

Multi-OS Sharing On Same Computer

Oct 2, 2009

I have a Multi-OS unit (Ubuntu, 2x Windows XP Pros, and Windows Vista), the problem started when I installed Windows 7 64bit RC. At first it worked well, then once I started using my media (pictures, music files, videos) whenever I worked on XP and Vista, I couldn't access my files in the media folders. It always says Access denied.

I found a small remedy by booting in Windows 7 and then editing the sharing properties, Share with homegroup and adding everybody in the list of people "to share with". The thing is, it doesn't work with some sub folders and files inside sub folders. I end up having to edit each and every shared folder's security/share settings.

The big question I'd like to consult is, if there was some way of resetting the sharing properties of my main/parent folders and reset them and their sub-folder hierarchy.

I understand the problem with security, but I think that it doesn't apply here since its just other OSes within the same system trying to access files inside it.

Sharing Printer From A XP Computer

Nov 18, 2009

Well here is my issue I have a XP computer that is hooked up with the Printer but I have it set it for to be shared already. When I go to "ADD PRINTER" and i hit the button saying "ADD NETWORK, WIRELESS, BLUETOOTH PRINTER" it searches and searches but it nevers finds it but when I had vista I had no issues finding it. We are on the same network and workgroup.

I am connected by wireless and the XP computer is connect via wired. What can be causing this because I am completely stumped about this because I am trying to figure out how to print stuff though a network printer. Another thing is I can not find any other computer on the network tab.

Sharing With Computer Turned Off/low Power?

Just wondering, is there a way so that if for example, I have a video folder that is being shared on the network, to continue being shared, even if the computer is turned off? I want to be able to share my files 24/7 but I dont want to keep the computer running all the time. Is there a way to share while in a very low power state?

Sharing Printer On Win7 (x64) With Win XP Computer

Aug 29, 2009

Having troubles setting this up.

Windows 7 computer working fine - printer working fine (it's a canon ip5200). On Windows XP machine (SP3), I am trying to access the printer. I've tried this a couple of ways and it fails every time.

1) Drill down to printer via the Add Printer searchj for a network printer action. This eventually will ask me to point to an INF file that I don't have (unpacking Canon's printer driver installer to get to the 'ip5200.inf' file will eventually get me a 'Invalid printer file' error even though I can see that the inf file looks like an inf file.

2) Try to add it as a local printer, pointing to the network path (etworkprinter). That installs OK, but it doesn't work.

3) Try to install a network printer giving it a network path. See #1.

What in the heck am I doing wrong? I cannot get Windows7 to add the Windows XP drivers to it's list so I can install it via the network.

Sharing To Specific Computer, Windows 7 To XP

Jun 21, 2011

I have a new storage computer here at work running Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. All other machines here are running WinXP 32 bit. The network is in a Workgroup with no domain. Here's what needs to happen: I have a folder on here that ONLY the boss is supposed to be able to see. However, I can't seem to set permissions for only his computer to have access to it. I've followed every tutorial I've found on google and elsewhere to no avail. I can ping the server from any computer, and if I set access permissions to "Everyone" for the folder or any other folder, all computers in the shop can access it. However, when I try to limit the folder to a specific machine, it denies all access to the folder from any computer. If I try to use the Share with option after right clicking on the folder, the other computers in the network aren't listed, and if I try to manually type in the name of the computer (I've also tried using the IP address), it gives me an error of "Windows can not find xxx".

Sharing A Folder To A Vista Computer

Oct 11, 2009

I know this question has been asked several times, and I've done a lot of research into it already, but I still can't seem to change my folder (in this case D:Movies) to be shared an accessed by my Vista x64 primary computer.

When I go into my Network and access the computer, it lets me view the shared folders that I've set sharing on, but when I actually double click the folder to open it I get this error message:

Windows cannot access XXXXX-DownloadsMovies

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. The error code is 0x80070005.

When I diagnose it tells me that the folder is available but my user account doesn't have access. However, I've already disabled password protected sharing, and I've accessed the Public section of my sharing settings and enabled everything that I read in previous posts, all to no avail.

I also read up on selecting the folder, then clicking the Share With.. tab and selecting "Everyone Read/Write", every time I try doing this as soon as I select the Share With.. tab again it's defaulted back to Nobody.

Here's the part I'm not sure could be causing all of this:

This folder, Movies, was originally on my Main Desktop PC (the Windows 7 machine is my new downloads machine) I bought a new 1.5TB sata2 hdd and set it up on my x64 vista (main) and transferred my movies folder on to it, then I uninstalled the hard drive and reinstalled it on my windows 7 x64 (downloads/secondary pc)

So the folder was originally on another computer, but was swapped via my new 1.5 TB hard drive, I'm not sure if this is related as I'm not a guru when it comes to any OS.

Regardless, I really need to get this folder on my Windows 7 machine accessible on my Windows Vista primary as soon as possible. If you need anymore information regarding either of my computers please let me know and I'll gather it as fast as I can,

Sharing Is Backwards With Mac?

Jan 26, 2011

I have two windows desktops and a mac mini all connected to a 16 port switch. All can ping each other just fine. Both Windows machines are running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit - One machine I use as my file and media server, with file sharing turned on in Network & Sharing Center; the other is simply a workstation, I have file sharing turned off on that machine. They are in the same homegroup, and I have no trouble reading & writing from workstation to server. Mac mini is running Snow Leo 10.6.6. All machines can access other network resources (printer, Internet).Using Mac, I can connect to the workstation (using Finder's Connect to Server), but I cannot connect to the server! This is backwards Macintosh!

I can access the user folder on the workstation from the Mac, and nothing else b/c file sharing is turned off on the workstation. But the Mac doesn't even connect to the server machine in Connect to Server. I get a Mac error saying check the IP address which leads me to think network related, but both computers can ping OK.I have Norton 360 on the workstation and Windows Firewall on the server. Is this why? I wouldn't think Windows FW would block the Mac but allow the Windows workstation? Like I said, homegroup and even direct connecting to the share works from the workstation.

Sharing Internet Via USB

attempting to connect my 360 to the network to play online/stream NetFlix. The Univ. posted this PDF detailing how to connect a console to the network. I picked up a Belkin USB->Ethernet adapter from campus IT the other day and began to follow the guide. While enabling Internet Connection Sharing from my local connection, it kept getting an error stating "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or group failed to start. I checked it's dependencies, Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager were set to "Automatic" but both bounced back with "Windows could not start the RA(A)CM service on Local Computer. Windows 7 And Mac 10.6 Sharing Via SMB?

May 22, 2011

I am running the latest version of windows home edition and can't seem to get it to connect to my SMB shares on my mac, or even see or acknowledge my mac's existence. I'm more of a mac guy so I'm positive my MBS shares aren't the problem. I can even put my mac's IP address into the windows side browser and get the "It works!" message. Under the windows network however I can't get it to access the mac. I've tried being in the same homegroup, no home group, creating identical users on each machine, shutting off the firewalls, adding registry hacks for LmCompatability level and still nothing. Most online help guides I have found point to things that don't even exist on this operating system, such as Local Security Policy or secpol.msc?

Can't Get File Sharing To Work

Now I add a third, and I can't get file sharing to work. I can SEE files on that third computer from mine, but it won't let me move files to that computer from mine, and it won't let me save them! It says I don't have permission. My userID on this computer is "Katie" and that computer also has a user account called "Katie." The folders in question DO have sharing set (by right clicking on them) so that "Katie" has read/write permission. Why don't have have write permission, then?

Way To Manage Sharing On A Network?

May 6, 2012

I am using the Homegroup feature of Windows 7 right now. I have four computers, configured with one account each, that are members of this HomegroupPC1, PC2, PC3, PC4PC1 configured the Homegroup and has the only shared library that is visible on the Homegroup. PC2, PC3, and PC4 all save documents to the shared Homegroup library on PC1.PC1 is basically acting as a file server.I want to set it up so that only certain accounts on each of the other three (PC2, PC3, PC4) computers can see certain folders in the shared Homegroup library. For instance, I have three folders in the shared Homegroup library located on PC1.Folder2, Folder3, Folder4How do I individually share those folders with only certain computers?

I have tried sharing with only "specific people" but it tells "windows was unable to find (name)". I have tried typing in the name of the computer to share with as well as account names.I have run the Homegroup troubleshooter on all computers and I still cannot share specific folders with specific computers. What would be the best way to share how I desire? Is there a better way than with the Homegroup or am I just doing something wrong?
