Running Os Through Removable Media?
Dec 7, 2011
i am running windows XP as of now and want to switch over to windows 7. is it possible to install windows 7 on a portable hard disk and keep the currently running xp as well so that i could insert the hard disk and change the boot sequence so that if the portable media is present, it runs 7 and when not present then it reads through the computers hard disk to boot the already installed xp.

I've got a laptop that used to be connected to a domain that was locked down tighter than Fort Knox...I think I cleared out all the old GPO's, but I'm still digging for ancient registry values and other settings everywhere that locked things down.Right now, I'm having trouble connecting my phone to my laptop, it's completely disabled all access to USB removable devices (especially drives, but apparently others as well).I've changed the usbstor > start setting in the registry already from 4 to 3I've whacked every GPO I could findI've tried to manually do "net start usbstor" and it gives system error 1058, says it's either disabled or has no devices associated with it.

If I mount a removeable media such as USB Stick or a TrueCrypt file volume (with rm option) then I cannot pin prgms from these medias/drives to the taskbar nor pin files to the Start menu. Is there really no way to disable this No-Pin-Protection? Under WinXP this worked without problems.

I have recently been bereft of the ability to write to standard CD/DVD drive or BluRay drive with any type of blank disc. I always use windows drag-and-drop. All automatic updates are installed.Every system tool test or troubleshooter says that the two devices are working properly. They can play pre-recorded material but I simply cannot get them to recognise blank media.

All my media is on PC1 running XP.
I use Tversity to stream via wired network to PS3 but also want to stream to PC2.
I got WMP11 library on PC2 to show the files from PC1 but they're not in any order at all. Folder structure seems be ingored !
Opened Media Center on PC2 (running Windows 7) and Media Library/Add folders.../On another PC but PC1 will not show up.
Any idea's how to stream from PC1 to PC2 either
- using Media Center on PC2
- getting WMP11 library so show files sensibly.

I have added the library for recorded tv and verified that the scheduler service is running. When I select a show for recording, it seems to accept it and shows the red dot in the guide, but when the show time begins - it doesn't record. Record worked before the recording drive failed and had to be replaced.

Frequently I notice when using Windows Media Center watching live TV that WMP is running when I havn't started it. Does it run automatically when Media center runs? And when I stop watching TV and minimize Media Center to the taskbar WMP is still running and consuming 8-12% of my processor when idle. What gives?

I have noticed lately that Windows Media Player has become a bit, choppy, a bit laggy. When playing videos, fraps reports a decent fps, and the actual video file is at a fps which will easily display as smooth, however I can clearly see choppy video. When this happens, other dynamic elements also become choppy, such as the windows animation displayed when moving files, or moving temperature graphs. Perhaps it is a video driver? Or something similar? Either way, the system should be easily able to keep up with the load.

I use my home network to stream music and movies from my computers to my Xbox and TV. Now all of a sudden, nothing. Both computers are running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, connected online through wifi, and connected to the network homegroup (that works without any issues), but neither or them detect any of my media devices. I have a Sony Viera ST30 TV and an Xbox 360, both having wired connections to the same network that the computers are on. Features that require the internet on both work perfectly fine. And I have a viera app on my phone that I used to use to control my tv (the app may not be compatible with my phone). Even having sharing enabled on the computers, they just wont detect my TV or my Xbox. If I connect my laptop to the network via wired connection, my devices are found. If I connect to a friend's wireless network, their devices are found as well. There has been no change on either computer from the last time it was working, till now.

I have an HP Pavilion PC, Windows 7, 1 yr old. It has never recognized the presence of a blank writable disc in the disc drive. When trying to save any type of file, it gives a "no disc in drive - insert a disc" message, even when a new writable disc has been inserted.

'The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available'. This is an error I get when I try to install the Games For Windows Live Marketplace onto my PC. From my understanding it may be because I am missing the Windows Installer Package .msi? Yet I cannot find a download that works with Windows 7... Is my assumption correct? Does anyone have a working link for Windows 7 64-bit? If not, what can I do about this irritating error that's stopping me from installing a fair few things. I also get messages whenever I install anything on steam, as, when it tries to mess with visual c+++ it tells me I am missing 'vc_red.msi' ...is this related?

I have a Thinkpad W500 laptop with a CD/DVD-R/RW multi drive in the UltraSlim-Bay. Windows 7 Pro 64-bit does not recognize it as a removable drive and does not provide a means to "safely remove" it.
Previously, Vista Business SP1 64-bit ran on the same hardware and handled the same optical drive correctly.
There was driver for "ez-eject" that was available from IBM/Lenovo for previous Microsoft OS. Is that what made the optical drive removable? If so, is there anything like that available for Windows 7 to correctly handle this drive as removable?

On my taskbar are five removable drives labelled H,W,X,Y and Z. I have no idea what storage device each of these drives is referring to. I would like to use the letter H to label a HDD. When I open disk management however (my computer>manage>disk management) none of the removable drives are shown.I have tried reading an assortment of USB sticks, phones and mp3 players but none of them show up as H. How can I change the drive letter of a removable drive?
