I am having difficulty reformatting my dell n7010 windows 7 64 bit os. when I get to the disk management it wont allow me to select format C: drive, it will only allow me to format the recovery drive.
View 2 RepliesThis is not a typical BSOD crash. My Dell Inspiron's monitor intermittently doesn't wake up once power management shuts it off. The problem is monitor doesn't fully shut off. One way to know the monitor won't wake up is when the CPU is griding away, fan is on full blast, laptop heated up, monitor still has a faint white brightness but no disk activity. I have tried connecting the laptop HDMI and VGA output different monitors and TVs but the monitor/ TV doesn't recognize any input signal during this phase. Yesterday, CPU suddenly started griding away without a pause while I was working and the base plastic was so hot I couldn't place it on my lap anymore. System Idle was 95-99%; I wanted to check whether laptop will not wakeup after power management kicks and this morning I couldn't wake up the laptop and had to cold boot it
I cannot put my laptop to sleep or hibernate when this occurs, the computer will just keep griding away with fan at full blast but will never hibernate or sleep.
I've run chkdsk, defrag etc but no issues were reported. I have checked for viruses etc, nothing obvious.

There is this thing called "dell datasafe" on my computer, but it seems like some kind of stupid service that stores your pictures and such online, amongst some other things that aren't so clear. Anyway, I made a "recovery media disk" (took 2 dvd-R's) but I am not certain if this is what I really need. It claims to reset the computer to "factory conditions" whatever that is supposed to mean. Bottom line is, what I would like to be able to do in the event of a catastrophic virus, etc, is to COMPLETELY 100% REFORMAT my computer, similar to the way you delete the partition, create a new partition, and reinstall Win XP. I do not care one bit about saving files, pictures, and all that sort of thing - I just want to be able to do a clean sweep in the event that I need to.

When the computer starts, I hit F12 and try to boot from the disc. All it does is just go straight to the login screen and I'm back where I was before...with the old operating system.Tried switching the BIOS to boot from disc...nothing is working? Could I make a back up of my files and programs, how exactly does that work, I don't exactly want to defeat the purpose of the reformat though. I don't want to have to re-install everything, but there's nothing sensitive on this computer, so losing everything would be more of an inconvenience than a problem.

We found that the main culprit was TDL 3 and have been able to successfully remove that, however the technician feels that my computer security has been comprimised and is recommending that I reformat the computer. I cannot find the Windows XP disc that I need to use to put Windows XP back on, but I have already purchased the Windows 7 upgrade. That was done before all the virus stuff and I was trying to fix all of that before I upgraded. I want to reformat my computer and Install Windows 7 but am worried it isn't going to work since I only have the upgrade purchase. I'm assuming from feedback from the other tech, the only way to completely rid the system of infections is to reformat.

I doubt it's a hardware issue since I just had Ubuntu 10.10 running on it a few days ago, flawlessly. I completely wiped the hard drive and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. All of the hardware on the computer is less than 6 months old, but I really doubt that it is hardware related since Ubuntu ran perfectly.It keeps freezing up every like 15 seconds, but only when I'm using Firefox. View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I'm trying to reformat my HD, and I'm having quite the time doing so. I have borrowed and Windows 7 disk from a buddy of mine and was going to reformat my HD and then buy a key online, but here is my problem:
I put the disk into my DVD Drive and restart, I immediately go into BIOS and make sure that my DVD-RW drive is first choice in boot order, it is. Upon restarting, it just does a normal boot process, it doesn't give me the option to boot from disk.
Anyways I have computer that I owned for a year now and have decided to reformat the computer due to some difficulties with it such as sluggish performance..windows processes getting stuck etc. and I have way to many programs to find out the root of the cause, but with the lack of experience on reformatting computers I may end up with errors in the end, I've searched up some forums like these as well on how to properly reformat a computer with windows 7 OS but just so I don't miss anything I would like to request if anyone has a Step by Step guide on how to do this. I just bought a new dell pc running windows 7 which is my first experience with it, however my computer only came with a Drivers and utilities disc. Is 7 not like xp where you use a disc or did my pc just not come with it?

So far I have tried building a system repair disc. Other tutorials [here] said it would take 7 CDs, this only took one so I'm not sure I did the right thing. I'm planning to re-install Windows 7 x64 Pro on the SSD. While doing this, I would also like to reformat the 2 RAIDed HDD's. What are the steps that I need in order to reformat the RAID1?
My SATA mode is set to AHCI at the moment. If I set the SATA mode to RAID and I boot to Windows, I'll get BSOD after the Windows logo screen. I'm not having Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed. The last time I did so on my current OS (also Win 7 x64 Pro), I got some weird chkdsk error, in which I was given thousands of "Replacing invalid security id with default id ..." for files on the RAIDed drive.
I'm planning to reuse the same 2 HDD's for RAID1 after the reinstallation. I've already copied the current data on the RAIDed disks to some external USB source.
I'm trying to do a clean reinstall, but I can't reformat the drive. I don't get very far, menu 'where do you want to install window', which is supposed to have a Format option, it doesn't!
