Dell Inspiron N7010 Monitor Won't Wake Up And Needs Cold Powerdown
Aug 23, 2012
This is not a typical BSOD crash. My Dell Inspiron's monitor intermittently doesn't wake up once power management shuts it off. The problem is monitor doesn't fully shut off. One way to know the monitor won't wake up is when the CPU is griding away, fan is on full blast, laptop heated up, monitor still has a faint white brightness but no disk activity. I have tried connecting the laptop HDMI and VGA output different monitors and TVs but the monitor/ TV doesn't recognize any input signal during this phase. Yesterday, CPU suddenly started griding away without a pause while I was working and the base plastic was so hot I couldn't place it on my lap anymore. System Idle was 95-99%; I wanted to check whether laptop will not wakeup after power management kicks and this morning I couldn't wake up the laptop and had to cold boot it
I cannot put my laptop to sleep or hibernate when this occurs, the computer will just keep griding away with fan at full blast but will never hibernate or sleep.
I've run chkdsk, defrag etc but no issues were reported. I have checked for viruses etc, nothing obvious.

I have a 4-month old Dell Inspiron N411Z with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit. I have been noticing that it has trouble "waking up" after sleep or hibernate, when I open the lid, after it was left on from the previous usage, I have to hit power button and it boots up with the first screen being safe mode, start windows normally, etc. I get the unexpected shutdown screen. It then boots normally and all is well, until I close the lid and let it sit, this happens whether it is plugged up or not. My first thought was to adjust power settings, sleep/hibernate timers, etc. I have tried nearly every combination, down to choosing "never sleep or hibernate" and still have the same result upon starting up again. I have scoured forums, updated drivers, tested and tried nearly all advice that I have found and can't seem to resolve this. Upon reviewing my Event Viewer, I am consistently getting the same errors nearly every time. The following will be the first six entries in "Administrative Events":
-ERROR-The previous system shutdown at 5:16:06 PM on 5/1/2012 was unexpected. -WARNING-Name resolution for the name [URL] timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
[Code]....
Nothing that I do or change, seems to affect the outcome. However, one thing that I have noticed is when I take the laptop to work or vacation with me, it seems to work fine!?? I noticed this after packing it my suitcase and not using it for nearly 3 days on a trip and went to use it when I got home, expecting to have to boot up as usual, and I get the "resuming windows" screen! as well as a nearly full battery, as if it went in to sleep/hibernation and woke up as it should. This has happened at least 2 times that I am aware of?

I'm trying to use my Vizio TV as a monitor for my dell Inspiron n5050 using VGA/SVGA video cable. I clicked "detect" in the display section of the control panel and an alternate monitor does not appear. The cord is secure and the TV is on the right setting. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a driver?

I know there has to be a simple fix to this but I'm banging my head against the wall right now trying to figure this out. Everytime my PC goes to sleep I'll press a button on my keyboard or move my mouse and it will wake up just fine, but the monitor won't wake up. I've also noticed that the backlight on my keyboard doesn't show up. I've tried different monitors and removed the VGA cable from the graphics card after waking up and plugged it back in and no video. I have to reboot the computer to get video again and everything works great.. until it goes into sleep mode again. I have updated my graphics card driver (Geforce GT 210) and still no fix. I haven't made any changes that would cause this. Someone has to know something about this

I have a Dell Studio XPS435 MT running Windows 7. For the past six months I noticed that when waking the computer from sleep mode, occasionally the monitor would not wake up and I would have to reboot. It got worse and worse until now it will never wake up without rebooting. I also noticed when I reboot, if I don't wait a few seconds for the computer noises to stop and immediately press the power button; the computer starts beeping loudly and nothing works. I have to manually shut it down and wait about 30-40 seconds to reboot.

My computer monitor won't wake up from sleep mode. The power light flashed blue like it is asleep but when I hit the keyboard or click the mouse nothing happens. I even restarted the computer and tested to see if the wires were bed or loose and that didn't help either. I switched out the monitor and the new one works on the computer so it seems it is something with the monitor.

I have just been given a Fujitsu Lifebook S6540 running windows 7 and on the whole it is fine but it is eating the battery when switched off. Research on the internet has shown that the computer, although seeming to shut down may still be running in the background. I have therefore been into the registry and changed the powerdown after shutdown code to 1 rather than 0 which should ensure a complete shut down. I duly did this and let the computer charge up before shutting down and then left it for a day. It did not make a shred of difference and found half the battery had been used. I have read around on various things that might cause this but a lot of it has been in extremely technical computer speak that I have been unable to understand. Is anyone here able to give me some clear trouble shooting advice and tell me what may be causing this?

Logmein software is able to wake the computer up with On Board Wake up is disabled or enabled in BIOS.I have also Toshiba L505D.Logmein software can wake the computer up only if Wake up on LAN is enabled in BIOS.What is the difference between ASUS BIOS's On Board Wake up option and Toshiba BIOS's Wake up on LAN option? UPDATE: I found out that ASUS's Option was for diskless boot and using network hard disks as hard disks. Nothing to do with Wake up on LAN.

I would like to install a new video card for my dell machine.
Dell Inspiron 531s
Windows 7 32-bit
Power Supply Unit: 250w
1 PCI-Express slot
Current Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430
(motherboard gpu)
Here is the GPU I'm looking at:
Newegg.com - SPARKLE SFPX95GT512U2L GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
I am concerned about the weak power supply and the motherboard GPU interfering.
Should I be considering a external power booster?
I would love to hear your suggestions.

What is happening is each cold boot of the computer, I will ALWAYS BSOD within the first few minutes, after the mouse starts to lag really bad and skip around. If i IMMEDIATELY restart the computer, it will literally run for weeks without a hiccup.I have replaced nearly every part of my rig minus the CPU and Memory. I've put in a new MOBO, SSD/SATA drives, Video card, Power supply. Flashed the BIOS with the latest version. The only thing left is the CPU.I've recently ran the windows memory diagnostics everything passed fine, but I've bought new memory just in case - will try that tonight.

I ordered the parts online and put them together myself. At first everything worked fine, I got Windows 7 up and running and drivers were installed without error. Then I decided to try and overclock my i5 2500k, since I have little experience with overclocking in general I googled a little and read up on a few step-by-step tutorials on how to go about with this. I'm not sure wether or not it's something I've meddled with that caused this problem, but in the middle of clicking around in my BIOS my computer suddenly dies. On reboot it halts and crashes after a few seconds only to reboot again before it even gets to the initial boot screen. It keeps going like this for 3-4 consecutive crashes until I pull the power. I open up my case and since my motherboard has a "mem-ok!" button which, according to the manual is used to reset BIOS and allow a safe boot. I press and hold for 5 seconds and it boots correctly and lets me undo any changes I've done to the BIOS. Everything seemed to be in working order, but now whenever I do a cold boot it still halts and crashes once or twice before it does a succesful boot.

I've had my laptop Dell INSPIRON N5030 for about a year.It was working fine up till now but when I boot it up it gives me a windows recovery error. It says: windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software might be the cause. When I choose the launch start repair, it just gives me the windows screen with the mouse and nothing happens. Then if i choose load windows normally, it will just go to the loading screen then it'll stay there for a while then go back to the windows recovery error.I've also tryed to reboot the hard drive by pressing F12, but it won't let me it just puts me back on to the windows recovery error screen.
