Recovering Lost Data From HDD?
Aug 23, 2012
Not one of the smartest things I did but my mate gave me his old computer excluding the HDDs
So I installed my HDD into it and thought while I was at it might as well upgrade to windows 7 (From XP) since I had to reinstall the OS. I installed window 7 using the upgrade option and the HDD were cleaned. I left it for a while only to come back now an unbootabe computer..... I reinstalled having to go through the custom install. I can now log into the computer.
Is the data on my HDDs gone forever? Also the OS isnt recognising one of my HDD's?? (Maybe save it for another post)
If this isnt the right section please let me know where to repost

I have recently installed windows 7 RC on my pc but after installation my D drive has been missing. It has all my final year college projects and other important information which i totally hate to loose.
This is my disk management screenshot where it has not assigned any letter to my missing 20 gb drive and it is taken as system type.

I was repartitioning a 3 NTFS partitioned 1,5tb drive down to one partition via win 7 Disk Management tool. I successfully shrank one of the partitions. After shrinking the second partition, win 7 had a hiccup and reported the remaining single partition is now in a 'RAW' format. I still have data on the drive that i would like to recover prior to reformatting it.Apparently, on reading up about "RAW' files, the data is still there. What i would like to do is to somehow view the data and extract portions of it at a time to other smaller hds. From what i has read i can only extract everything to another 1.5tb drive, which i just don,t have available. If i can find a solution, i will eventually reformat and reuse my 1.5tb drive. How can i extract portions of data from a "raw" drive to a second smaller drive?

how to recover a lost confirmation page. I entered a lottery visa today. I wanted to print the confirmation page but firefox was not responding. At the request of my aunt, I clicked the option to close the firefox program. I restarted firefox and the confirmation page did not reappear. The tab is not in my browsing history either. Is there anyway I can retrieve the information from my computer files?I have tried looking at the browser history. It was the only page not showing up. I have tried looking at the firefox cache but it only showed the last two hours of activity. I have tried looking in the temp files but all of the ones I have went to in the computer are from days ago. I cannot find a folder that says internet temporary files.

Right, I was basically writing a series of files onto my dvd-r using the windows 7 cd burner (the default one). The problem is, I cut-pasted them onto the dvd. Now, this was the fourth DVD being burnt and I had done the other three quite successfully. However, the third DVD, despite deing burnt, was still showing the files as *not* burnt. The problem was that the completion dialog hadn't shown upThat didn't seem to be a problem. I therefore deleted those files (which were written successfully) and cut-pasted the next batch for the next DVD. So far so good. However, the burn completion dialog now showed up. In my haste, I clicked finished. Because of this, my newly copied files were deleted (as Wi

So my laptop's motherboard fried, and so I ended up creating a new desktop. I also got a usb enclosure for the old HDD, and managed to get most of the data off- with the exception of anything in my personal user folder- which includes documents, desktop files, and the download folder. I have the old Username/password for my old windows account but I have no idea how to retrieve it, as it keeps denying me access.

I accidentally deleted a partition in Windows 7 (dynamic disk) using the disk management tools. That partitions is full of works and photos from the last 2 years. Are there any way I can recover the data? The space left by the deleted partition are still un-allocated at the moment. Do I need to create the partition prior to data recovery? I am using Active Partition recovery to scan at the moment. No result yet.

I have an external HDD (WD MyBook) that fell from a height of about 7 inches. The computer(s) will recognize it but say it's not initialized which means the boot records are fine. There are no grinding or any kind of noises at boot-up so the needle and platter seem to be ok. I started a complete recovery in EASEUS, but it's been 2 hours and it only found 54 files so far. (I know there are hundreds). Usually, on formatted drives, the number of "total files found" add up pretty quickly on this software and it is able to scan a 1TB drive in about 5 - 6 hours. This is the first time that I'm seeing such a slow reading of the drive. (Which makes me wonder again if it's physically damaged). since it's know that the best method of recovery is to start the recovery process as soon as possible, for any usage of the drive will reduce the success rate of recovery. But I'm thinking that if I just allow Windows to initialize the disk and format it with a quick format, that the only thing I'm ruining is the table, which EASEUS doesn't care about since it analyzes the disk by sectors.

I got a nasty virus a few days ago and my MSE and Malwarebytes kept taking care of it but it kept coming back. Finally my computer crashed and upon reboot, EVERYTHING was gone. By gone my computer would still boot but it was loading a default desktop with ALL my icons gone and when I would try to access my C: drive, it showed that it was completely empty. Looking in "My Computer" the space was still used though.Next looking at my D: and E: drives (2TB and 3TB WDC's) I found the same issue. My Computer showed the amount of space I expected to see take and free was correct but when I would access them, they were empty like freshly formatted drives.I fired up a command window and did the following: attrib -h -r -s /s /d X:*.* X being the drive letter in question at the time. This seems to have restored MOST of my folders on my D: and E: drives. However something were still locked out with the following style errors..Also, some of the folders that were unhidden STILL show as "access denied" when I try to enter/access them. I can get into them as I'm an "admin" on this system. How do I just reset all my permissions so it's like it should be if the drive was FRESH.

I had a message about errors when I plugged in my WD external hard drive. I let the Error Checking run and when it finished it said I needed to format the disk. I cancelled this and looked in my computer and although the drive appeared, no details (i.e. space usage) was present.
I re-ran Error Checking with "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" checked. After running this the drive appeared properly in My Computer.
However there are many files missing, and the space usage of what is there doesn't match up with what my computer says.
Files I can physically see: ~ 120 Gb. Space usage according to Explorer: ~420 Gb. So it looks like tha data may still be there but Windows can't see it? Edit: BTW, forgot to say, all this is booted into Windows 7 not XP on my dual boot system.

I recently installed Windows 7. Couldn't see my external hard drive although it was "visible" in the control panel. Thought the isssue was the lack of a drive letter. Assigned a letter in disk management and then the drive "appeared" in My Computer but - the are no files on the previously very full drive. I realize that some sort of partition was created but cant imagine that I lost all data in a split second without running fdisk or the likes. How do I get the files back?

I have a HP Touchsmart 300-1060a (Home Premium Windows 7 64 BIT) which I bought few years back. Now for the last 6 months or so I started getting issues with my machine was not displaying anything at all after turning it on. So I had to hard reset my power from the machine and then was able to see it started displaying again. At first I suspected graphic card (NVIDIA GEFORCE) but then I did my diagnostic test and nothing was found. One day, I started re-imaging my machine as a fresh and then after this it never came back ONLINE. I read all HP forums & even HP Online support was unable to help me to find the cause.Because when I turn on my machine I can see the power light was on and could hear big fan noise but mo HDD activity at all.So at this stage, I suspected either motherboard or BIOS but wasn't 100% sure what could be the real cause because I was sure it was not due to graphic card.So first I re-setted by my BIOS to see if it helps but it didn't came up at all. So then I took my machine to a Computer repair shop (a friend of mine) and we detected it could be due to the regulator which supplies power to the CPU and motherboard. So we replaced that part and now my HP Touchsmart is running fin since then. But I have lost my HP Startup logo with options such as below: [code]

My friend's laptop won't boot. You turn it on and the Advent symbol comes up and gives you an option to go into the BIOS or onto system recovery. It allows you to go no further. If you go to system recovery you can't even do anything, the typing cursor style thing is just flashing. He doesn't have the CDs to recover Windows 7 and restore it.Is there any way to restore? I also have an Advent laptop, would it work if I made a recovery CD from control panel for Windows 7 and then use it to boot and restore his Windows?

My new laptop, after about 8 months of service, yesterday refused to be turned on again. No reaction to pressing the on button. The power supply seems to work. Before sending it for repair, I opened it and got the 2 HDs out in order to recodev some data using a SATA/USB adapter. Unfortunately, BOTH disks, when connected to another PC using the adapter, say that they need formatting. I tried to open a DOS window and typed : chkdsk e: /r It replied that the file system was RAW and chkdsk didn't work for it. When connected to a Linux PC, I can see the partitions but I could not mount them.

My husband's laptop had an issue. When that issue occurred our father in law created a stack of back-up discs. My husband had 100s of music CDs loaded on his laptop. so these recovery discs include all that music. He had his computer system restored by Geek squad with windows 7. But we can't figure out how to restore this stack of discs with all of his music. We've searched on windows help with no luck. He puts the disc into the e: drive and the files are visible. We don't simply drag and drop right?
