So my laptop's motherboard fried, and so I ended up creating a new desktop. I also got a usb enclosure for the old HDD, and managed to get most of the data off- with the exception of anything in my personal user folder- which includes documents, desktop files, and the download folder. I have the old Username/password for my old windows account but I have no idea how to retrieve it, as it keeps denying me access.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was repartitioning a 3 NTFS partitioned 1,5tb drive down to one partition via win 7 Disk Management tool. I successfully shrank one of the partitions. After shrinking the second partition, win 7 had a hiccup and reported the remaining single partition is now in a 'RAW' format. I still have data on the drive that i would like to recover prior to reformatting it.Apparently, on reading up about "RAW' files, the data is still there. What i would like to do is to somehow view the data and extract portions of it at a time to other smaller hds. From what i has read i can only extract everything to another 1.5tb drive, which i just don,t have available. If i can find a solution, i will eventually reformat and reuse my 1.5tb drive.How can i extract portions of data from a "raw" drive to a second smaller drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to relocate some of my personal data folders in my User Profile folder (My Music, My Videos, My Pictures). I right clicked on the folder, selected "Properties" and then selected the "Location" tab from the two rows of tabs. I set the location to my D drive (non-system drive). Clicked "Apply" and "OK". A My Music folder already existed on this drive. Got the prompts for "Do you want to move the files in this folder to the new location? (clicked Yes)" That worked for the My Music folder. Then I tried My Pictures folder... same right click, Properties, Location. Set the path to my P drive where I had an already existing My Pictures folder.
Got the same prompts for "Do you want to move the files in this folder to the new location? (clicked Yes)" Then I got a warning message that said "Unable to copy folder where one already exists (or some verbage similar to that)". So I tried it again. Nothing. Closed out of all folders and then reopened to try again. When I right clicked on My Pictures in my User Profile and selected properties, there was just a single row of tabs with no Location tab. There was no way to change the path of the folder. ??? Puzzling. So I am looking for a way to repair the User Profile folder and reenable the Location tab on the folder properties. Just did a clean install last night
Having crashed my wife's dual-boot system, and the HP recovery section is no longer available. We have got it back up using the hp windows 7 update disk from hp. (had vista). What I need to know is best way to back up our data before I crash something again. Will windows 7 help me build "recovery" disks that also back up our personal data... or should I back up our personal data another way? We have no Windows 7 installation disk - just the upgrade disk from HP (Vista to Windows 7). Reason for asking: I have 2 corrupted partitions in linux that I need to reformat and I want our data backed up before I start.

So I installed my HDD into it and thought while I was at it might as well upgrade to windows 7 (From XP) since I had to reinstall the OS. I installed window 7 using the upgrade option and the HDD were cleaned. I left it for a while only to come back now an unbootabe computer..... I reinstalled having to go through the custom install. I can now log into the computer.
Is the data on my HDDs gone forever? Also the OS isnt recognising one of my HDD's?? (Maybe save it for another post)

Right, I was basically writing a series of files onto my dvd-r using the windows 7 cd burner (the default one). The problem is, I cut-pasted them onto the dvd.Now, this was the fourth DVD being burnt and I had done the other three quite successfully. However, the third DVD, despite deing burnt, was still showing the files as *not* burnt. The problem was that the completion dialog hadn't shown upThat didn't seem to be a problem. I'd love to find one that will show me duplicate pictures, even if renamed. It would be even better if it easily allowed me to specify a directory to put all of the duplicates in...so they can be removed from a drive. I probably don't need to worry about other types of files, as it is just my photos that would have duplicates.

Are there any way I can recover the data? The space left by the deleted partition are still un-allocated at the moment. Do I need to create the partition prior to data recovery? I am using Active Partition recovery to scan at the moment. No result yet.

When i boot from the usb key it hangs on the starting windows screen. It takes no longer than 1 minute to get there and then it seems like the computer isn't responding.

Keep getting the warning flag with the red cross left bottom screen saying security centre turned off Go to turn it on and get a message The windows security center service can't be started . If I go to services and go to the security center i find it disabled restart it but after a few seconds it's back to disabled again Have run malwarebyts in safe mode and got 8 problems cleared them up but still no go When it first happened is was getting redirected IM results and it has stoped me doing a system restore after malwarebyts run i don't get the redirects but still no restore and still not able to start security center
I Think thay i have got rid of the main problem but still left some problems in the reg. or have a rootkit I did try rkill then dtss rootkit remover that did show results but then blue screens me.
Can you really speed up Windows by simplifying the Windows7 / Vista Interface? If so what would you need to do make the entire windows have a bland, Windows95 look ?

Why does Microsoft say in their license terms that you can't use an OEM license for personal use, but they sell it through third parties (Amazon and Newegg) and they know that ordinary people are going to buy these OEM copies. If Windows Activation goes through with it then it must be fine, right?Also, I kind of mentioned this already, but why would they sell it through third parties if they CLEARLY know that any average personcould come across it and buy it. It doesn't say anywhere on Amazon's product description page that I have to sell it to a third party.
